Piroxicam is a benzothiazine compound with anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and analgesic properties. Because of the very high efficacy of piroxicam and its increasing use in the treatment of carcinomas in dogs and cats, there is a need for acute toxicity study of piroxicam in monogastric animals and its potential for causing secondary poisoning in puppies. Piroxicam manufactured by Shanxi Federal Pharmaceutical Co, Ltd. was used for this study. Revised up-and-down procedure was used for the estimation of median lethal dose in mouse (259.4 ± 51.9 mg/kg), rat (259.4 ± 69.6 mg/kg), rabbit (707.5

BACKGROUND: Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are commonly used to treat conditions such as arterial hypertension and supraventricular dysrhythmias. Poisoning from these drugs can lead to severe morbidity and mortality. We aimed to determine the utility of extracorporeal treatments (ECTRs) in the management of CCB poisoning.
METHODS: We conducted systematic reviews of the literature, screened studies, extracted data, summarized findings, and formulated recommendations following published EXTRIP methods.
RESULTS: A total of 83 publications (6 in vitro and 1 animal experiments, 55 case reports o

Organophosphorus pesticide poisoning causes tens of thousands of deaths each year across the world. Poisoning includes acute cholinergic crisis as a result of AChE inhibition, intermediate syndrome (IMS) due to neuromuscular necrosis and organophosphate-induced delayed neuropathy (OPIDN) due to inhibition of neuropathy target esterase (NTE). Standard treatment for acute poisoning involves administration of intravenous atropine, oxime 2-PAM to counter AChE inhibition and diazepam for CNS protection. However clinical trials showed ineffectiveness of the standard therapy regimen. Although new oxi

Coumarin causes severe poisoning in animals, affecting the development of agriculture and animal husbandry. Coumarin induces hepatotoxicity, but the inflammatory mechanism of coumarin is unclear. Here, we explored the effects of coumarin on systemic and hepatic inflammation. Our study found that coumarin reduced the abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila. The number of colonic goblet cells and the expression of Claudin 1 and ZO-1 were decreased in coumarin-treated groups, increasing intestinal permeability. Coumarin elevated the expression of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) biosynthesis genes and serum

INTRODUCTION: Sodium diethyldithiocarbamate and disulfiram have been proposed as effective nickel chelators. This paper examines the value of these compounds in the treatment of acute nickel carbonyl poisoning by reviewing published experimental and clinical data.
REVIEW: In 2 studies, parenteral administration of diethyldithiocarbamate 50-100 mg/kg to rats immediately following nickel carbonyl exposure ensured the survival of all animals: Mortality fell from 73% to 8% when diethyldithiocarbamate was administered at 10 minutes in a third study. In the same study, there was no protection when

N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) is widely used in chemical industries because of its excellent solvent properties. Poisoning accidents caused by DMF have been frequently reported, particularly hepatotoxicity; however, the hepatic pathological changes have rarely been described. This study aimed to summarise the pathological characteristics of the hepatotoxicity associated with DMF in clinical cases and to verify in animal models. Liver pathologies of two patients with liver failure due to DMF were retrospectively analysed. Thirty-six rats were categorised into the DMF group (intraperitoneally inje

Strychnine poisoning induces seizures that result in loss of control of airway muscles, leading to asphyxiation and subsequent death. Current treatment options are limited, requiring hands-on medical care and isolation to low-stimulus environments. Anticonvulsants and muscle relaxants have shown limited success in cases of severe toxicity. Furthermore, nonfatal strychnine poisoning is likely to result in long-term muscular and cognitive damage. Due to its potency, accessibility, and lack of effective antidotes, strychnine poses a unique threat for mass casualty incidents. As a first step towar

Ipomoea carnea subsp. fistulosa (Convolvulaceae) causes poisoning of goats, sheep and cattle in many tropical and subtropical countries. The pathophysiology of this poisoning mainly involves an abnormal glycoprotein metabolism. The aim of this study was to describe the potential toxicity of I. carnea in a guinea pig model through its effect on hematopoiesis in a time course study of 40 days. Experimental poisoning was achieved by feeding animals with "small balls" prepared with milled leaves of I. carnea mixed with commercial crushed pellets for rodents. Hematologic and biochemical parameters,

Zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) is a readily available rodenticide that, on contact with stomach acid and water, produces phosphine (PH3), a highly toxic gas. Household pets that ingest Zn3P2 often will regurgitate, releasing PH3 into the air. Veterinary hospital staff members treating such animals can be poisoned from PH3 exposure. During 2006-2011, CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) received reports of PH3 poisonings at four different veterinary hospitals: two in Michigan, one in Iowa, and one in Washington. Each of the four veterinary hospitals had treated a dog that

An 8-year-old, crossbred beef cow was referred to the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Purdue University for a complete necropsy in October 2009. The cow was the sixth to die in a 7-day period. Affected cows were reportedly stumbling and became weak, excitable, and recumbent. Histologically, myonecrosis was severe in the skeletal muscles and mild in the heart and tongue. According to the submitter, exposure to a poisonous plant was suspected, and a plant specimen received from this case was identified as white snakeroot (Ageratina altissima). Using the white snakeroot specimen,

This paper overviews several examples of important public health impacts by marine microbes and directs readers to the extensive literature germane to these maladies. These examples include three types of dinoflagellates (Gambierdiscus spp., Karenia brevis, and Alexandrium fundyense), BMAA-producing cyanobacteria, and infectious microbes. The dinoflagellates are responsible for ciguatera fish poisoning, neurotoxic shellfish poisoning, and paralytic shellfish poisoning, respectively, that have plagued coastal populations over time. Research interest on the potential for marine cyanobacteria to

An outbreak of poisoning by Lantana camara occurred in cattle when a herd sought refuge in a Eucalyptus forest heavily infested by this plant. The animals showed apathy, elevated serum activities of hepatic enzymes, severe photosensitivity, jaundice, hepatomegaly and nephrosis. After a clinical manifestation period of 2-15 days, 74 out of 170 heifers died. The main histological changes were random hepatocellular necrosis, cholestasis, biliary proliferation and, in one animal, centrilobular necrosis. Immunostaining for Caspase 3 detected scattered apoptotic hepatocytes.

Four incidents of Duranta erecta (golden dewdrop, Sheena's Gold, Geisha Girl) poisoning affecting nine dogs and a cat produced drowsiness, hyperaesthesia and tetanic seizures in all affected animals with evidence of alimentary tract irritation (vomiting, gastric and intestinal haemorrhage, diarrhoea, melaena) in five dogs and the cat. Fruits and leaves were seen to be eaten by affected animals. Therapy was successful in three of the dogs. Repeated diazepam doses and, in some cases, additional pentobarbitone or propofol anaesthesia, were successful in controlling seizures.

An active natural focus of icterohemorrhagic leptospirosis has been detected in the area of fish-breeding ponds in Rostov Province, where the intensive epizootic among the population of Norway rats is observed the whole year round (574 animals have been examined, 56 cultures have been isolated). The epizootic process reaches its highest intensity in autumn (the proportion of infected animals exceeds 50%). This natural focus in the area of fish-breeding ponds is epidemiologically dangerous. The limitation of its infectious potential is possible by means of poisoned baits.

The unintentional poisoning of off-target animals by bromadiolone, a second generation anticoagulant rodenticide, is an undesirable outcome requiring sensitive analytical methods. In this study, a rapid and sensitive method for the determination of bromadiolone in liver and blood plasma by means of gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry without need for derivatization was developed. The method is based on the in-injector pyrolysis of bromadiolone and subsequent gas chromatography coupled with ion trap tandem mass spectrometry with electron ionization. Sample preparation inclu

OBJECTIVES: Current evidence suggests that mortality from acute organophosphate (OP) poisoning is partially mediated through central nervous system (CNS) respiratory center depression (CRD). However, the exact mechanism of OP-induced CRD is unknown. In these studies, the authors investigated the hypothesis that OP-induced CRD is the result of overstimulation of CNS respiratory centers.
METHODS: Wistar rats received prophylaxis with either normal saline (controls), atropine, the peripherally acting anticholinergics glycopyrrolate (GLYC), ipratropium bromide (IB), or the CNS respiratory center

In preparing this Position Statement, all relevant scientific literature was identified and reviewed critically by acknowledged experts using agreed criteria. Well-conducted clinical and experimental studies were given precedence over anecdotal case reports and abstracts were not usually considered. A draft Position Statement was then produced and subjected to detailed peer review by an international group of clinical toxicologists chosen by the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology and the European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists. The Position Statement went throug

Solanum macrocarpon (African eggplant) is a tropical plant widely cultivated as a delicious vegetable; the non-edible wild variety called Solanum macrocarpon L. ssp dasyphyllum (the wild African eggplant) bears thorns or spikes on the stem and leaves. Thirteen yearling heifers on a dairy farm in Uganda suffered acute poisoning after eating berries of S. macrocarpon L. ssp dasyphyllum. There was sudden onset of anorexia, copious salivation, severe dysentery and passage of red urine. The animals also had central nervous derangement (incordination, walking blindly) and exudative dermatitis. Four

Inherited resistance to anticoagulant rodenticides was discovered in populations of Rattus norvegicus about 14 years ago. Similar resistance has now been reported from several countries in north-western Europe and from the USA. In order to detect resistance and to control it effectively, basic data on the susceptibility of rat populations are required for each country, and trapping surveys should be made in any area where resistance is suspected. Acute poisons are needed to control resistant rats although the shift from anticoagulants to acute poisons is a retrograde step as far as efficiency
