Intrinsic risk factors for acute ankle injuries among male soccer players: a prospective cohort study.

This prospective cohort study was conducted to identify risk factors for acute ankle injuries among male soccer players. A total of 508 players representing 31 amateur teams were tested during the 2004 pre-season through a questionnaire on previous injury and function score (foot and ankle outcome score; FAOS), functional tests (balance tests on the floor and a balance mat) and a clinical examination of the ankle. Generalized estimating equations were used in univariate analyses to identify candidate risk factors, and factors with a P-value <0.10 were then examined in a multivariate model. Dur…

Comparison of two intraoperative assessment methods for injuries to the ankle syndesmosis. A cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative stress testing is required for the detection of syndesmosis instability following an ankle fracture. The present study compared two stress tests for the detection of syndesmotic injury. METHODS: A true mortise radiograph of the ankle was made for fourteen cadaver joints. Specimens were randomized into two groups to simulate ligament and syndesmosis injury on the basis of the Danis-Weber classification system. In the first group, the anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament was divided first (Weber B(r)), followed sequentially by division of the interosseous membrane

Rupture of the tibialis posterior tendon: an important differential in the assessment of ankle injuries.

Rupture of the tibialis posterior tendon can be missed. We report a case of posterior tibialis tendon rupture that, owing to misdiagnosis, resulted in a significant foot deformity requiring arthrodesis for chronic pain.

Ankle overuse injuries in soccer players. Morphological adaptation of the talus in the anterior impingement.

The ankle joints of 88 professional soccer players have been studied. The high presence of radiographic changes unchained in its great number by impingement phenomena among the articular areas, being 59.1% for the right ankle and 52.3% for the left one, has been confirmed. These radiographic images seem to indicate in the ankle joint the existance of osseous remodeling phenomena to face overuse and overstress, having in the major part of cases no clinical translation, so that we might denominate them as the "radiographic arthrosis of sportsman". Two types of morphological adaptation of the nec

Morphological Characteristics of Lateral Ankle Ligament Injuries Associated With Recurrent Instability After Arthroscopic Repair for Chronic Ankle Instability: 3D Volume Rendering MRI Model Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic lateral ligament repair is widely performed to treat chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI), with good clinical outcomes. However, some patients show residual or recurrent instability after surgery. Although some risk factors of recurrent instability have been reported, the morphological characteristics of lateral ankle ligament injuries with residual or recurrent instability remain unclear. HYPOTHESIS: Characteristic patterns of anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) injuries may be observed in patients with CLAI who have residual i

Management of ankle sprains: a randomised controlled trial of the treatment of inversion injuries using an elastic support bandage or an Aircast ankle brace.

BACKGROUND: Lateral ligament ankle sprains are the single most common sports injury. OBJECTIVE: To determine the functional outcome of the ankle joint after a moderate or severe inversion injury, comparing standard treatment with an elastic support bandage against an Aircast ankle brace. DESIGN: Prospective, randomised controlled trial. SETTING: Two accident and emergency departments. METHOD: Fifty patients presenting consecutively were randomised into two equal groups: one group was treated with an elastic support bandage and the other with an Aircast ankle brace. All patients were given

The Ankle-GO™ score predicts return to sport after surgically treated unstable syndesmotic injuries.

PURPOSE: Objective return to sport (RTS) criteria following syndesmotic stabilization are limited. The purpose of this study was to explore the discriminative and predictive ability of the Ankle-GO™ score for RTS status following syndesmotic stabilization. METHODS: At 3 and 6 months postoperatively, 50 patients were assessed using the Ankle-GOTM score, which consists of four functional tests and two self-reported questionnaires. At 6 months, patients reported their RTS status using three possible responses: no RTS, RTS at a lower level or RTS at the same or a higher level than before injury.

Ligamentous ankle injuries in relation to the morphology of the incisura fibularis: A systematic review.

IMPORTANCE: Ligamentous ankle lesions are among the most frequent sports injuries. One of the key intrinsic stabilizers of the ankle joint is the incisura fibularis (IF), as it interlocks the distal tibia and fibula. Despite an abundant amount of studies related to ligamentous ankle injuries, scant attention has been given to the specific role of the IF morphology. OBJECTIVE: We systematically reviewed all literature focused on the relation between ligamentous ankle lesions and IF morphology. EVIDENCE REVIEW: A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science …

The relationship of hip muscle performance to leg, ankle and foot injuries: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Hip control affects movement and muscle firing patterns in the leg, ankle and foot, and may contribute to overuse injuries. Muscle performance can be measured as strength, endurance or muscle activation patterns. Our objective was to systematically review whether hip muscle performance is associated with leg, ankle and foot injuries. DATA SOURCES: A structured and comprehensive search of six medical literature databases was combined with forward and backward citation tracking (AMED, CINAHL, EMBASE, Medline, Scopus and SportDiscus). STUDY SELECTION: Eligible studies measured hip m

Open grade III "floating ankle" injuries: a report of eight cases with review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: "Floating ankle" injuries result from high-energy trauma and are usually associated with extensive soft tissue damage. Such rare and complex injuries in the acute phase pose therapeutic dilemma to the treating surgeon. When salvage instead of amputation is preferred, a variety of treatment options are available ranging from open reduction along with minimal internal fixation to external fixation. In this retrospective case series study we report eight patients with open "floating ankle" injuries who had been treated with external fixation with or without internal fixation. MATER
