Information regarding the treatment of anthrax infection is scarce in adults and is even more limited in children. Children, however, may be at a greater risk for developing an infection and systemic disease if exposed to anthrax than adults. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the use of doxycycline or ciprofloxacin for prophylaxis and treatment in children. Doxycycline currently is not indicated for use in children < 8 years old, due to staining of teeth and inhibition of bone growth associated with tetracyclines. Doxycycline, however, may have less adverse effect…

A case of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) following anthrax vaccination is described. The patient is a 39-year-old, previously healthy man on active duty in the US Marine Corps, in whom a urticaral skin rash and progressive dyspnea on exertion developed following subcutaneous anthrax vaccination. A diagnosis of bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia was made from transbronchial lung biopsy samples after evaluation excluded multiple infectious and collagen vascular etiologies. This appears to be the first recorded case of HP following an anthrax vaccination; however, a case report…

Anthrax-disease of herbivorous animals, occasionally affecting humans, is regarded as an ideal biowarfare weapon. This was witnessed during a tragic accident in Swierdłowsk some time ago and nowadays it has been observed among post office workers in the USA. Depending on the way the pathogen enters the body, several forms of disease develops: skin anthrax specific for the man (with mortality up to 20%), intestinal anthrax resulting from the consumption of infected food or flash of infected animals (with mortality up to 60-80%) and inhalation pulmonary anthrax (with mortality up to 90%). The le…

With the growing threat of bioterrorism, it has become important for clinicians to recognize the clinical manifestations of diseases spread in this manner. The aim of this article is to provide readers with a complete and detailed understanding of anthrax, with a specific concentration on the cutaneous manifestations and a concentrated review of the treatment and current information known about Bacillus anthracis.

Anthrax, caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis, is rarely seen in industrial nations but is common in developing countries. Cutaneous anthrax (CA), the most common form of the disease, accounts for 95% of cases and usually develops on exposed sites. This study reviews the clinical and laboratory findings of 21 patients diagnosed with CA during 2 separate epidemics in the Van region of Turkey. All patients had a history of direct contact with infected cattle. The patients, aged 1.5 to 64 years, included 13 females and 8 males. Of the patients, 9 were 15 years or younger. Skin…

Anthrax is a zoonosis which is particularly prevalent in cattle, goats and sheep and is caused by Bacillus anthracis, a Gram-positive spore forming aerobic microorganism. The endospores can survive outside of the body for many decades. The natural form of anthrax has a cutaneous, pulmonary and intestinal form. The pulmonary form can be rapidly fatal but is difficult to recognise due to an initially non-specific, flu-like clinical picture. As a result of spores being inhaled, a mediastinal lymphadenitis arises from which a systemic disease develops with a violent toxaemia, damage to the vascula…

While there is a general decrease in the number of anthrax outbreaks, and thus of human cases, worldwide this is still a disease that is extensively under-diagnosed and under-reported. However, it is now very infrequent to rare in Canada, the United States, and many countries in Europe. An increasing number of countries are now free. At the other extreme, it is a significant problem in West Africa, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Albania, Romania and in Central Asia. In spite of the textbooks, livestock and wildlife deaths do occur, sometimes commonly, without any 'diagnostic' extravasation of blood an…

BACKGROUND: Anthrax is basically an animal disease rarely found in humans. We report a case occurring in a young boy who had minimal signs and a suggestive skin lesion.
CASE REPORT: A 16-year-old boy living in the steppe pastures in western Algeria was hospitalized for unexplained long-duration fever. Physical examination and laboratory tests did not suggest any infectious disease among those common in our area: typhoid fever, brucellosis, meningitis. Anthrax was suggested by presence of an escarrotic black plaque measuring 2 to 3 cm localized on the left leg. The lesion was very adherent and…

Cutaneous anthrax in humans is a very rare disease caused by Bacillus anthracis. Humans become infected with this spore-forming bacterium when they come into contact with an infected animal. The disease usually develops on exposed sites like the hands and the face. The authors present 4 patients with cutaneous anthrax: 2 of the hands and 2 of the eyelids. All patients needed plastic surgical help via skin grafting after excision of the black eschar. No complications occurred after surgery. Because they are so rare in Europe and the United States, sporadic cases of anthrax are easily overlooked…

The pathomorphological picture of experimental B. anthracis infection in white rats (strain Fisher-344) essentially corresponds to experimental anthracic intoxication with very moderately pronounced morphological manifestation of B. anthracis invasion. This indicates that specific anthracic intoxication is an essential component of the pathological process in B. anthracis infection.
