We performed abdomino-perineal resection of the rectum and partial resection of a vagina in a 78-year-old woman on a diagnosis of anal canal basaloid carcinoma with vaginal invasion. We did not perform specific adjuvant therapy pre- or postoperatively, but no recurrence appeared for 5 years. Anal canal basaloid carcinoma is a comparatively rare disorder, and the prognosis is relatively good. It seemed that determination of the indication of postoperative adjuvant therapy will require the accumulation of future further cases and enough appearance with operative methods in the treatment of anal

We report a rare case of pSM anal canal cancer with pagetoid spread and inguinal lymph node involvement. A 74-year- old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of a perianal erythematous lesion. Preoperative skin biopsy revealed an infiltration of pagetoid cells and signet-ring cell carcinoma cells, which were positive for CK20 and negative for GCDFP 15 by immunohistochemical stainings. Colonoscopy demonstrated an elevated lesion located just above the dentate line. Total pelvic exenteration with lateral and inguinal lymph node dissection followed by skin reconstruction with gluteal thi

BACKGROUND: Verneuil's disease or hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic suppurative, and cicatricial inflammatory disease, mainly affecting apocrine-bearing area of the skin. Squamous cell carcinoma is an uncommon but a frightening complication of hidradenitis suppurativa.
AIM: To report a new case of squamous cell carcinoma arising in Verneuil's disease.
CASE REPORT: We reported a case of 60 year old man with a 30 years history of hidradenitis suppurativa in which squamous cell carcinoma arise. A wide surgical excision removing the tumour and leaving a large defect was performed. The patien

Bowen's disease is a special form of squamous cell carcinoma in situ that usually develops in photoexposed areas of skin. The treatment of choice is surgery. Less frequently, it may appear in other locations such as the nails, glans penis, intertriginous areas and the perianal region, where conventional treatment may be complicated. We contribute a new case of perianal Bowen's disease, which responded to treatment with imiquimod with no evidence of clinical recurrence after 3 years of follow up. Imiquimod appears to be a therapeutic alternative for perianal Bowen's disease, which seems to have

The cloacogenic zone of the anal canal is a vestigial remnant of the cloacal membrane. This region corresponds to the columnae anales and anal glands. The epithelial lining of the anal glands and of the cloacogenic zone is of the transitional variety. The anal glands are well known to the surgeon because of their role in the pathogenesis of perianal abscesses and fistula in ano. Tumors arising from the cloacogenic zone of the anal canal are rare. In most instants these carcinomas have characteristic clinicopathological features. These lesions are named transitional cloacogenic carcinoma. The t

PURPOSE: Our purpose was to analyze the effect on gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity models when their dose-volume metrics predictors are derived from segmentations of the peritoneal cavity after different contouring approaches.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A random forest machine learning approach was used to predict acute grade ≥3 GI toxicity from dose-volume metrics and clinicopathologic factors for 246 patients (toxicity incidence = 9.5%) treated with definitive chemoradiation for squamous cell carcinoma of the anus. Three types of random forest models were constructed based on different bowel bag

Anal cancer is a rare cancer that accounts for about 2% of all gastrointestinal tract malignancies. Among anal cancer, squamous cell cancer is the most common malignancy. The incidence of all stages of anal squamous cell cancer has been increasing. Human papillomavirus infection and immunosuppression are major risk factors for anal cancer. The management of anal cancer has evolved over the past several decades and continues to do so. Chemoradiation therapy remains the mainstay for treatment for most patients with early-stage disease, whereas systemic therapy is the primary treatment for patien

The diagnosis of anal cancer is relatively uncommon, but its incidence has been steadily increasing in high-risk populations. In the 2001 Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytology, anal cytology was introduced as a component. Since then, it has been recognized as a potential tool for screening anal cancer, often in conjunction with high-resolution anoscopy. There are notable similarities between anal cancer and cervical cancer, including the causative role of human papillomavirus. However, there are also significant differences, particularly in terms of disease prevalence. Anal cytology

BACKGROUND: The development of high-resolution anoscopy (HRA) has advanced our ability to detect anal dysplasia. Historically, HRA is performed in a clinical setting and subsequent ablation is performed in the clinical setting or operating room. The aim of this study was to determine the most effective venue for the performance of HRA.
METHODS: Following institutional review board (IRB) approval, the correlation between anal cytology and HRA performed in the clinic versus in the operating room was evaluated. Data were extracted from our IRB-approved prospective HRA database over the time peri

Anal cancer is a relatively rare, mostly HPV-related cancer. The curative treatment consists of concurrent chemoradiation delivered with modern radiotherapy techniques. The prognosis for most patients with early localized disease is very favourable; however patients with locally advanced disease and/or HPV negative tumours are at higher risk of locoregional and distant treatment failure. Tailored approaches are presently being investigated to determine the most suitable regimen in terms of radiotherapy dose prescription, target volume selection, normal tissue avoidance, and combination therapy

PURPOSE: Optimal clinical target volume (CTV) for inguinal lymph node irradiation in anal cancer remains uncertain. This study documents the location of radiographically involved inguinal lymph nodes and proposes guidelines for CTV delineation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with anal canal squamous cell carcinoma with inguinal lymph node metastases were identified. Criteria for lymph node involvement included: >15 mm short axis or suspicious morphology on CT or MRI, increased avidity on 18-FDG-PET, or positive biopsy. Distances from center of involved nodes to femoral vessels and inferior p

Generally, the first treatment plan for anal canal squamous cell carcinoma(SCC)is chemo-radiation therapy(CRT). We experienced an extremely rare surgery case of anal canal SCC after prostate brachytherapy. A man in his 70s who had undergone brachytherapy for prostate cancer 8 years before visited our hospital because of blood in feces. A tumor prolapsed from the anal verge, and biopsy revealed SCC. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed front-wall thickness in the lower rectum, but we could not evaluate it in detail because of the halation by brachytherapy seeds. We performed laparoscopi
