Pancreatitis associated with clomipramine administration in a dog.

A three-year-old, male, entire, Yorkshire terrier was presented with peracute onset of abdominal pain and vomitus. Clinicopathological abnormalities included severely increased serum lipase activity, immeasurably high serum trypsin-like immunoreactivity and mild hypocalcaemia. Canine pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity (cPLI) was intended to be measured, however, the sample got lost. Ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic pancreas with small amounts of peripancreatic fluid and hyperechogenic mesentery. Acute pancreatitis (AP) was diagnosed and the dog recovered with appropriate therapy within 48

Altering women's relationships with food: a relational, developmental approach.

Eating disorders, ranging from body-image distortions to full-blown anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, reflect developmental issues and significant deficits in feelings of self-efficacy. The relational model, an outgrowth of theoretical work specific to the psychology of women, is an appropriate treatment approach. This model appreciates the social context and pressures that foster disconnection from the self and helps the woman to reconnect with self and others, decreasing the need for obsessive control over food and weight. Treatment emphasizes empathy, connection, mutuality, and authenti

Placebo Response in Pediatric Anxiety Disorders: Results from the Child/Adolescent Anxiety Multimodal Study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to identify predictors of pill placebo response and to characterize the temporal course of pill placebo response in anxious youth. METHODS: Data from placebo-treated patients (N = 76) in the Child/Adolescent Anxiety Multimodal Study (CAMS), a multisite, randomized controlled trial that examined the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy, sertraline, their combination, and placebo for the treatment of separation, generalized, and social anxiety disorders, were evaluated. Multiple linear regression models identified features associated with placebo respons

Alterations in HPA-axis and autonomic nervous system functioning in childhood anxiety disorders point to a chronic stress hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: It is of debate whether or not childhood anxiety disorders (AD) can be captured by one taxonomic construct. This study examined whether perceived arousal (PA), autonomic nervous system (ANS) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis measures can distinguish children with different primary diagnoses of clinical anxiety disorders (AD) from each other, and from a general population reference group (GP). METHODS: The study sample consisted of 152 AD children (comparing separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia and specific phobia), aged 8- to 12-year

[How do asthmatic women experience the illness?].

This study aimed to identify and understand the essence of the anguish of five asthmatic women, patients of the Pneumology Service of a hospital in Porto Alegre, and how they interact with the health professionals. It uses the qualitative methodology, with semi-structured interviews. The content analysis identified: a dependent relationship and an incidence of separation anguish demonstrated by the way the women deal with medication and the caregivers; some of the women's impediments; difficulties to describe the illness and asthma crisis. The separation anxiety and the dependent behavior of t

Anxiety in adolescents: Update on its diagnosis and treatment for primary care providers.

Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental health concern facing adolescents today, yet they are largely undertreated. This is especially concerning given that there are fairly good data to support an evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety, and also that untreated, these problems can continue into adulthood, growing in severity. Thus, knowing how to recognize and respond to anxiety in adolescents is of the utmost importance in primary care settings. To that end, this article provides an up-to-date review of the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders geared

Reduction of preoperative anxiety in pediatric surgery patients using age-appropriate teaching interventions.

More than 5 million children in the United States undergo surgery annually. Of those 5 million children, 50% to 75% experience considerable fear and anxiety preoperatively. Preoperative anxiety in children is associated with a number of adverse postoperative outcomes, such as increased distress in the recovery phase, and postoperative regressive behavioral disturbances, such as nightmares, separation anxiety, eating disorders, and bedwetting. Preparing the pediatric patient adequately for surgery can prevent many behavioral and physiological manifestations of anxiety. Children are most suscept

Unique Behavior Profiles That Specify Mental Distress in Autism.

PURPOSE: Patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), particularly those with limited speech, may not communicate internal distress. Clinicians therefore often infer distress from observable aberrant behaviors, whose clinical significance may differ from that in typically developing (TD) individuals. We identified aberrant behavior profiles (ABPs) that differentially track symptom dimensions across ASD and TD groups, and between minimally verbal ASD (MV-ASD) and fluently verbal ASD (FV-ASD). METHODS: We pooled three NIMH Data Archive studies with CASI-5 severities (12 domains) and Aberrant B

Inborn stress reactivity shapes adult behavioral consequences of early-life maternal separation stress.

Early-life experience strongly impacts neurodevelopment and stress susceptibility in adulthood. Maternal separation (MS), an established model of early-life adversity, has been shown to negatively impact behavioral and endocrine responses to stress in adulthood. However, the impact of MS in rats with heightened inborn stress susceptibility has not been fully explored. To address this issue we conducted MS in Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats, an animal model of comorbid depression and anxiety, and Wistar rats, which share a similar genetic background with WKYs. WKY and Wistar pups experienced either 180

Long-term effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy for youth with anxiety disorders.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has demonstrated favorable long-term outcomes in youth with anxiety disorders in efficacy trials. However, long-term outcomes of CBT delivered in a community setting are uncertain. This study examined the long-term outcomes of individual (ICBT) and group CBT (GCBT) in youth with anxiety disorders treated in community mental health clinics. A total of 139 youth (mean age at assessment 15.5 years, range 11-21 years) with a principal diagnosis of separation anxiety disorder (SAD), social anxiety disorder (SOP), and/or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) were eval

[Discrimination of anxiety disorders by parent ratings: A study based on the Questionnaire for Anxiety and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders (FBB-ANZ)].

Discrimination of anxiety disorders by parent ratings: A study based on the Questionnaire for Anxiety and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders (FBB-ANZ) Abstract. Parent ratings are often used for screening during the diagnostic evaluation of anxiety disorders. Clinically, it is important to correctly differentiate between anxiety and other psychiatric disorders and to distinguish specific anxiety disorders. The present study examined the validity of the screening results obtained by the Parent Questionnaire for Anxiety and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders (FBB-ANZ). We examined whether the FBB-ANZ di

A clinical study of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents from North Indian children and adolescents clinic.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Anxiety disorders are the most common group of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents. But few studies on specific anxiety disorders in children and adolescents are available in India. Therefore, this study was planned to identify anxiety disorders in children and adolescents in an Indian psychiatry outpatient setting and elicit its phenomenology and co-morbidities. METHODS: 1465 persons were screened using screen for child anxiety related emotional disorders (SCARED) scale. The screen positive patients were assessed and diagnosis of anxiety disorders was

Effects of vanillic acid and exercise on early-life stress-induced anxiety-, depression-like behaviors and neuronal damage in rats.

Early-life stress has been closely linked to the development of various neuropsychiatric disorders, including anxiety and depression. This study investigated the protective effects of vanillic acid, exercise, and their combination on early-life stress-induced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors and neuronal damage in the maternal separation (MS) rat model. Pups from Wistar albino rats were subjected to a maternal separation protocol, whereas control pups were not. After the MS protocol, rats were randomly divided into four groups: saline, exercise, vanillic acid (VA; 100 mg/kg, oral), or a

Fibroblast growth factor 2 alters the oxytocin receptor in a developmental model of anxiety-like behavior in male rat pups.

We aimed to determine the short-term effects of early-life stress in the form of maternal separation (MS) on anxiety-like behavior in male rat pups. In order to assess anxiety, we measured 40kHz separation-induced ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) on postnatal day (PND) 11. We further aimed to evaluate the potential involvement of two neurochemical systems known to regulate social and anxiety-like behaviors throughout life: oxytocin (OT) and fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2). For these purposes, we tested the effects of neonatal administration (on PND1) of an acute dose of FGF2 on USV and its pot

The association of anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive personality disorder with anorexia nervosa: evidence from a family study with discussion of nosological and neurodevelopmental implications.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the association of anorexia nervosa with anxiety disorders through use of a case-control family study design. METHOD: Lifetime prevalence of anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive personality disorder was determined among 574 first-degree relatives of 152 probands with anorexia nervosa and compared to rates observed among 647 first-degree relatives of 181 never-ill control probands. RESULTS: Adjusting for comorbidity of the same illness in the proband, relatives of probands with anorexia nervosa, had a significantly higher prevalence of generalized anxiety, obs

Validity of the CBCL/YSR DSM-IV scales Anxiety Problems and Affective Problems.

BACKGROUND: The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Youth Self-Report (YSR) are widely used for clinical and research purposes. Fairly recently, new 'DSM-IV scales' designated Anxiety Problems and Affective Problems were developed. Knowledge about the validity of these scales is needed. METHODS: In a referred sample of 277 6- to 18-year-olds, it was examined to what extent CBCL/YSR scores on the Anxiety Problems and Affective Problems scale predicted DSM-IV diagnoses of separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia, major depressive disorder, or dysthymia. Psychiatric disorders in adolescents exposed to domestic violence and physical abuse.

The relationship between abuse and psychiatric diagnoses was investigated in two groups of physically abused adolescents, 57 living in homes with interparental violence and 32 in homes without such violence, and in 96 nonabused adolescents living in nonviolent homes. Adolescents in the first group were found to be at greater risk for depression, separation anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder than were those in the second group. Adolescents in the first group also appeared more vulnerable to anxiety and depression.
