BACKGROUND: Chronic radiation proctitis (CRP) manifests as rectal bleeding 12 to 24 months after pelvic radiotherapy. No criterion standard of treatment has been established, although argon plasma coagulation (APC) has increasingly become the treatment of choice. Epistaxis is a common symptom in patients with hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia. It may vary in severity from infrequent mild bleeds to regular severe bleeding, the latter requiring multiple blood transfusions. In neurosurgical practice the laser can be considered an additional instrument to improve conventional techniques, or even a new method of treatment of some cerebral lesions. A complete laser surgery requires the association of three laser sources in combination. The CO2 laser is useful for cutting small lesions in important brain areas. Nd: YAG is particularly suitable for tumor surgery--allowing a deeper destruction with predictable effects associated with a more complete hemostasis. The combination Nd: YAG-Argon has clear indications for irradiation of the vessels.

Ninety eyes from 88 patients with active macular subretinal neovascular membranes of presumed ocular histoplasmosis were treated with photocoagulation: 45 eyes with blue-green argon laser and 45 with red krypton laser. Final visual results are compared between these two series and natural course of the disease. The krypton laser photocoagulated eyes obtained better final visual results when compared with both the argon laser treated series and natural course.
