This study presents the application of an analytical model, PARMA, to estimate the population-weighted annual absorbed dose to the lens of the eye due to cosmic rays. Cosmic ray flux data incorporating geographical altitude, together with the global population data from 2020, were used to estimate the global population-weighted annual eye lens dose. The resulting value was 0.267 mGy, ~11% lower than the annual effective dose due to cosmic rays evaluated in the latest UNSCEAR reports. This population-weighted estimate provides a more accurate assessment of background eye lens dose levels and fa

Recent studies suggest that an underlying mechanism for susceptibility of patients and astronauts to presyncope includes hypoadrenergic responses to orthostatic stress. However, data used to reach this conclusion are open to various interpretations. In this report, maintenance of sympathetic neural activity (MSNA; peroneal nerve microneurography) during -60 mmHg lower body negative pressure (LBNP) was associated with maintenance of orthostatic tolerance, and disappearance of MSNA was associated with hypotension and pre-syncope. However, MSNA was substantially higher during progressive increase

Introduction -The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) transition from operations in low-Earth orbit to long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars necessitates the development of progressively Earth-independent medical operations (EIMO) to support crews and reduce overall mission risk. Previous work has defined and laid the foundation for EIMO, but further development of the concept is required to prepare for future exploration missions. Methods -NASA's Exploration Medical Capability element organized a series of 5 technical interchange meetings from 2023 to 2024, which in

INTRODUCTION: With increased access to commercial spaceflight and space tourism, plus a push for longer duration spaceflights, it is especially important to understand the impact of spaceflight on musculoskeletal health. Upper extremity injuries are the most common musculoskeletal injuries in spaceflight. It is, therefore, vital to determine the changes to the upper extremities during spaceflight. The purpose of this study was to examine the state of knowledge on the impact of spaceflight on upper extremity orthopedic health, and to identify knowledge gaps and future areas of research.

Activities in space will expose humans to profoundly new environments, challenging human performance and will require innovative supportive technologies. Among these environmental variables, exposure to ionizing radiation is a major concern for astronauts, as the long-term effects of exposure on diverse tissues are poorly understood. This need however creates opportunities for novel approaches, particularly in the development of countermeasures against the effects of ionizing radiation exposure. Carcinogenesis presents a unique challenge as a disease process, due to the inherent complexities o

Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is associated with acquired optic disc edema, hyperopia, and posterior globe flattening in some astronauts during long-duration spaceflight possibly due to the headward fluid redistribution in microgravity. The goal of this study was to assess whether strict head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest as a spaceflight analog would produce globe flattening and whether centrifugation could prevent these changes. Twenty-four healthy subjects separated into three groups underwent 60 days of strict 6° HDT bed rest: one control group with no countermeasure (n =

Long-duration exposure to the space environment causes physical adaptations that are deleterious to optimal functioning on Earth. Post-mission rehabilitation traditionally concentrates on regaining general muscle strength, neuromuscular control, and lumbo-pelvic stability. A particular problem is muscle imbalance caused by the hypertrophy of the flexor and atrophy of the extensor and local lumbo-pelvic muscles, increasing the risk of post-mission injury. A method currently used in European human spaceflight to aid post-mission recovery involves a motor control approach, focusing initially on t

Immediately following spaceflight, many astronauts are unable to maintain adequate perfusion of the brain after assuming an upright posture; this condition is called post-spaceflight orthostatic intolerance (PSOI). Considerable evidence shows that inputs from otolith organs and other graviceptors play an important role in regulating blood pressure during changes in posture in a 1-g environment. However, reflexes elicited by graviceptors, presumably including those affecting the cardiovascular system, are attenuated during spaceflight. Thus, PSOI could be related to effects of microgravity on t

Although the risk of trauma in space is low, unpredictable events can occur that may require surgical treatment. Hemorrhage can be a life-threatening condition while traveling to another planet and after landing on it. These exploration missions call for a different approach than rapid return to Earth, which is the policy currently adopted on the International Space Station (ISS) in low Earth orbit (LEO). Consequences are difficult to predict, given the still scarce knowledge of human physiology in such environments. Blood loss in space can deplete the affected astronaut's physiological reserv

Long-duration space exploratory missions to the Earth's moon and the planet Mars are actively being planned. Such missions will require humans to live for prolonged periods beyond low earth orbit where astronauts will be continuously exposed to high energy galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). A major unknown is the potential impact of GCRs on the risks of developing degenerative cardiovascular disease, which is a concern to NASA. A ground-based rat model has been used to provide a detailed characterization of the risk of long-term cardiovascular disease from components of GCRs at radiation doses relev

PURPOSE: As the average duration of space missions increases, astronauts will experience longer periods of exposure to risks of long duration space flight including microgravity and radiation. The risks from long-term exposure to space radiation remains ill-defined. We review the current literature on the possible and known risks of radiation on the eye (including radiation retinopathy) after long duration spaceflight.
METHODS: A PubMed and Google Scholar search of the English language ophthalmic literature was performed from inception to July 11, 2022. The following search terms were utilize

Space motion sickness has long been a difficult medical problem in human space flight. Because it is a group of syndromes of the astronauts in adaptation to the new space environment and is related to a wide range of factors, the research of space motion sickness is different from that of cardiovascular and pulmonary system. Subjective methods and qualitative investigation are frequently used, and quantitative analysis is limited since objective stimuli that can be used in specific space environment are few and the samples are small. So precise localization of the problem is very difficult. In

An internal jugular venous thrombus in an astronaut was first identified in 2020 following a two-month microgravity exposure. This raised concerns about thromboembolic events (TE) during spaceflights. Studies have suggested that microgravity can induce changes in blood composition, venous flow and endothelial dysfunction, which might all contribute to a hypercoagulable state. However, whether these proposed mechanisms translate into a clinically significant increase in TE risk remains unclear since, even though humans have spent >200 person-years in space, no studies of blood coagulation in mi

To upkeep health of astronauts in a unique, isolated, and extreme environment of space is the primary goal for a successful space mission, hence, safe and efficacious medications are essential for the wellness of astronauts. Space medication has been challenged with problems related to efficacy. Along with altered physiology, one of the possible reasons could be instability of space medications in the presence of harsh spaceflight environmental conditions. Altered physical and chemical stability can result in reduced potency which can result in reduced efficacy. Right now, medicines from the I

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is implicated in platypnea-orthodeoxia, stroke and decompression sickness (DCS) in divers and astronauts. However, PFO size in relation to clinical illness is largely unknown since few studies evaluate PFO, either functionally or anatomically. The autopsy incidence of PFO is approximately 27% and 6% for a large defect (0.6 cm to 1.0 cm). A PFO is often associated with atrial septal aneurysm and Chiari network, although these anatomic variations are uncommon. Methodologies for diagnosis and anatomic and functional sizing of a PFO include transthoracic echocardiography

Spaceflight is considered an extreme environment, and from the first days of flight, microgravity causes significant modifications in several physiological systems, particularly the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, immunological, and nervous systems. To safeguard astronauts' health on upcoming trips, it is crucial to better counteract microgravity's effects using the best prevention methods. With this objective, we launched the NEBULA (Nutrition and Exercise Biology for UnLoaded Astronauts) collaborative research project. The first phase of NEBULA investigates whether a targeted high-intensity

Changes in ocular and brain structure and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) dynamics from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data have been reported in astronauts following long-duration spaceflight. The purpose of this study was to quantify normal variation in these outcomes over a 2-year period in a healthy cohort similar in age to astronauts, but without spaceflight experience. Variation in MRI acquisition, observer measurement, or normal aging over a 2-year period was used to determine thresholds for interpreting measures following long-duration spaceflight. Ten healthy participants (5 male), aged

BACKGROUND: The blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB) comprises the choroid plexus epithelia. It is important for brain development, maintenance, function, and especially for maintaining immune homeostasis in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Although previous studies have shown that the peripheral immune function of the body is impaired upon exposure to microgravity, no studies have reported changes in immune cells and cytokines in the CSF that reflect neuroimmune status. The purpose of this study is to investigate the alterations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) immune homeostasis induced by mi

We introduce a dynamically deployed communication network (DDCN) paradigm using mesh topology in support of a distributed robotic multi-agent approach for the autonomous exploration of subsurface environments, i.e., caves, lava tube caves, lakes, and oceans, etc. The DDCN, comprising wireless communication beacons autonomously deployed via a rover or submersible in a Hansel & Gretel-inspired breadcrumb style, allows for the longest and most robust communication link between subterranean robotic agent(s) within, e.g., a lave tube cave or a subsurface ocean, and associated surface-borne robotic
