Trajectories of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder dimensions in adults.

OBJECTIVE: There is a lack of available information on the trajectories of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) dimensions during adulthood. This study investigates the course and the predictors of change for each ADHD domain in a clinical sample of adults with ADHD. METHOD: Adults with ADHD (n = 344) were followed up for 7 years, with a final retention rate of 66.0%. Trajectories of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity and their potential predictors were examined. RESULTS: On average, symptoms declined in all ADHD domains during follow-up. Despite this, rises in inattentiv

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: the past 50 years.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder and one of the main diagnoses seen by general paediatricians today. Despite the impression often portrayed in the media, it is not a new condition; in fact it has been described for over 200 years. The past 50 years has seen a progressive increase in our understanding of the underlying neurocognitive deficits in ADHD, and over the past 20 years behavioural genetics and neuroimaging studies have shed light on the complex causal factors and neurobiological processes operating. The plethora of ADHD research ha

Brain abnormalities in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: a review.

AIM: To review the magnetic resonance imaging findings in child and adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). DEVELOPMENT: Studies have shown that ADHD is characterised by multiple functional and structural neural network abnormalities including most prominently fronto-striatal, but also fronto-parieto-temporal, fronto-cerebellar and even fronto-limbic networks. Evidence from longitudinal structural imaging studies has shown that ADHD is characterised by a delay in structural brain maturation. This is reinforced by indirect evidence from cross-sectional imaging studies for more i

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in a Canadian prison population.

Previous research has shown that a significant percentage of offenders are affected by adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and its related symptoms, however it is unknown the extent to which this disorder affects federal inmates in Canada and the impact ADHD has on key correctional outcomes. Four hundred and ninety-seven male federal offenders were assessed at intake over a fourteen month period using the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS). Approximately 16.5% scored in the highest range, which is consistent with the clinical threshold for diagnosis for the disorder; a furth

Dental injuries and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and traumatic dental injuries in children. A total of 194 children aged 7-15 years participated in this study. Fifty-seven traumatic injuries to permanent teeth were observed in 33 children. Although a statistically significant difference was not found (p= .848), the rate of incidence was higher in the group with ADHD (17.5%) than in the control group (16.5%). The maxillary right central incisors accounted for nearly half of all injured teeth, while the maxillary central incisors

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a shift toward resilience?

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) present a concern across clinical, academic, and social domains. However, a subset of these children does fairly well symptomatically and functionally. This article employs a resilience framework to organize the research on factors that promote favorable outcomes in ADHD. A PubMed search was conducted using key words: resilience and ADHD. Of particular interest were articles focusing on modifiable protective factors, such as parenting and pharmacotherapy. There is consensus that genetics strongly contributes to the etiology of ADHD.

Computer-assisted management of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Medication management of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often suboptimal. We examined whether (1) brief physician training plus computer-assisted medication management led to greater reduction in ADHD symptoms and (2) adherence to the recommended titration protocol produced greater symptomatic improvement. METHODS: A randomized medication trial was conducted that included 24 pediatric practices. Children who met criteria for ADHD were randomly assigned by practice to treatment-as-usual or a specialized care group in which physicians received 2 hours of didactic

Meditation therapies for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common developmental disorders experienced in childhood and can persist into adulthood. The disorder has early onset and is characterized by a combination of overactive, poorly modulated behavior with marked inattention. In the long term it can impair academic performance, vocational success and social-emotional development. Meditation is increasingly used for psychological conditions and could be used as a tool for attentional training in the ADHD population. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of meditation t

[Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Clinical and treatment aspects].

Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a complex disorder. The onset of the disease is in childhood. The most important symptoms of ADHD are hyperactive, impulsive and inattention symptoms. In addition, children with this syndrome often have difficulties with other aspects of their learning, emotional modulation, organization, motivation, memory and other functions of the brain's management system. Drug medications, behavioral treatment and behavioral interventions at school are the most important aspects of treatment for ADHD syndrome.

Decreased callosal thickness in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging studies of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have revealed structural abnormalities in the brains of affected individuals. One of the most replicated alterations is a significantly smaller corpus callosum (CC), for which conflicting reports exist with respect to the affected callosal segments. METHODS: We applied novel surface-based geometrical modeling methods to establish the presence, direction, and exact location of callosal alterations in ADHD at high spatial resolution. For this purpose, we calculated the thickness of the CC at 100 equidistant mids

[Disorders comorbid to attention deficit hyperactivity syndrome in children].

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common behavioral disorder found in children. Comorbid disorders, including oppositional/aggressive behaviors and emotional disorders, may be present in the majority of children diagnosed with ADHD thus complicating an optimal choice of pharmacotherapy. We evaluated the comorbid disorders in an out-patient sample of 76 children with ADHD (59 boys and 17 girls) aged 5-11 years using the Russian version of Kiddie-Shedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia - Present and Lifetime Version. In all cases, a diagnosis met ICD-10 diagnostic cr

New drugs for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neuropsychiatric disorder of childhood. Recent research indicates that ADHD most often persists into adolescence and adulthood, and is associated with impairments in academic, social and occupational functioning. The ADHD diagnosis is based on history and clinical examination. There are no objective laboratory measures for diagnosis. ADHD is largely heritable. Its underlying pathophysiology has been theorised to include dysregulation of inhibitory noradrenergic frontocortical activity on dopaminergic striatal structures. Eviden

Molecular genetic aspects of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Two genome wide scans, one of which was subsequently extended, have led to the identification of different chromosomal regions assumed to harbour genes underlying attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Some of these regions were also identified in patients with autism and/or dyslexia. The only region for which both studies detected a LOD score >1 was on chr 5p13 which is in the vicinity of the location of the candidate gene DAT1. The candidate gene approach has revealed the most robust and replicated findings for DRD4, DRD5, and DAT1 polymorphisms. Meanwhile interesting endophenotype

Atomoxetine, a novel treatment for attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder.

Atomoxetine is the first nonstimulant drug approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and the only agent approved by the FDA for the treatment of ADHD in adults. Atomoxetine is a norepinephrine transport inhibitor that acts almost exclusively on the noradrenergic pathway. Its mechanism of action in the control and maintenance of ADHD symptoms is thought to be through the highly specific presynaptic inhibition of norepinephrine. Clinical trials to evaluate the short-term effects of atomoxetine in childre

Drugs under investigation for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

There has been substantial development of pharmacological treatments for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) recently. The greatest change is the approval of new delivery systems for methylphenidate (MPH) and amphetamine (AMP) that permit once a day dosing. There are also a number of new compounds under development for the disorder, including several non-stimulant agents. These compounds target the noradrenergic, histaminergic and dopaminergic systems. The recent developments in the pharmacological treatment of ADHD should increase therapeutic options and the percentage of individu
