Screening Utility of Ambient Pressure Tympanometry for the Detection of Radiologic Correlates of Subjective Pulsatile Tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the sensitivity and specificity of ambient pressure tympanometry (APT) for the detection of a radiologic correlate of subjective pulsatile tinnitus (PT). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review. SETTING: Tertiary care clinic. PATIENTS: 107 adults (147 ears) with PT who underwent APT between 2021 and 2025. INTERVENTIONS: Blinded audiologists classified APT tracings as pulse-synchronous or not. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Sensitivity and specificity of APT using any radiologic diagnosis or surgeon-defined diagnosis as 2 separate gold standards. RESULTS: Of 137 (93.2%) ears th…

Can a large language model inform patients about auditory brainstem implants?

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the performance of ChatGPT-4o in responding to patient-centered questions concerning auditory brainstem implantation (ABI), with a focus on content quality and readability. METHODS: A total of 51 real-world patient questions related to ABI were reviewed and grouped into five thematic categories: diagnosis and candidacy, surgical procedures and complications, device function and mapping, rehabilitation and expected outcomes, and daily life and long-term concerns. Responses were independently assessed by two audiologists and one otologist across four domains-accu…

Evaluation of remote check in children with cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the feasibility of reducing in-person appointments by utilizing Remote Check (RC) in pediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients and investigates the most suitable age range for implementing RC. METHODS: Fifty-eight pediatric CI recipients, aged 1-17 years, were evaluated using a web-based RC application by audiologists. Most (84.5 %) used verbal communication. Inclusion criteria required stable map status, caregiver tech proficiency, and a compatible phone. RESULTS: Remote assessments were beneficial, with 89.7 % of participants successfully completing RC. Rehabilitation for unilateral deafness - Narrative review comparing a novel bone conduction solution with existing options.

Patients with single sided deafness (SSD) struggle with sound localization and speech in noise. Existing treatment options include contralat … ss, patient age and comorbidities, and a shared decision-making model among patients, surgeons, and audiologists should be considered in device selection. The aim of this manuscript is to review available devices, discuss surgical considerations for implantable devices, review available published results for speech in noise and sound quality with each device, …

Prevalence of Childhood Permanent Hearing Loss after Early Complex Cardiac Surgery.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of childhood permanent hearing loss (PHL) after early cardiac surgery. STUDY DESIGN: This prospective observational (1996-2015) study after complex cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass at ≤6 weeks of life reports audiology follow-up by registered pediatric-experienced audiologists at 6-8 months postsurgery, age 2 years, and as required throughout and thereafter to complete diagnoses. PHL at any frequency (500-4000 Hz) is defined as responses of >25-decibel hearing level in either ear. PHL was evaluated by type (conductive or sensorineural), patter…

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a 2-hr initial audiologic assessment appointment for infants referred from area universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) programs to a clinical audiology department in an urban hospital. METHOD: A prospective auditory brainstem response (ABR)-based protocol, including clicks, frequency-specific tone bursts, and bone-conducted stimuli, was administered by 10 audiologists to 375 infants. Depending on the ABR findings, additional test options included distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), high-frequency tympano…

Vestibular dysfunction in Gulf War syndrome.

METHODS: Vestibular complaints of Gulf War veterans were characterized by a nested case-control study of 23 veterans with 3 different Gulf War syndromes and 20 matched control subjects. All subjects completed a standardized symptom questionnaire and underwent standard audiovestibular tests administered by audiologists blinded to group identities. RESULTS: The prevalence of reported dizzy spells was higher in veterans with Gulf War syndromes 1 (100%), 2 (85%), and 3 (100%) than in controls (25%, P < 0.0001). Dizzy spells were more frequent, lasted longer, and involved a wider variety of accomp…

[Neonatal hearing screening].

Auditory deprivation in early life significantly effects speech, language, cognition and learning development. The importance of neonatal hearing screening in order to detect and manage children with hearing impairment during the critical period before three years of age can't be neglected. The neonatal hearing screening program at Veterans General Hospital, Taipei, under a cooperation of audiologists, otologists and pediatricians, identified 1885 neonates for hearing loss from September 1990 to August 1991. There were two study groups, a high risk group of hearing impairment and a non-high ri…

Tinnitus Screener: Short-Term Test-Retest Reliability.

PURPOSE: The Tinnitus Screener was introduced in 2015 as a four-item algorithmic instrument to assess the temporal characteristics of a person's reported tinnitus. The Tinnitus Screener was then revised as a six-item version to include a new temporal category and to capture tinnitus duration (acute < 6 months vs. chronic ≥ 6 months). When contrasted with audiologist assessment, the four-item Tinnitus Screener was determined to be highly valid, but the short-term reliability of either version remained unknown. The present analysis focused on determining the test-retest reliability of the six-it

Cytomegalovirus infections in pregnant women as a risk of congenital deafness in a child.

INTRODUCTION: One per cent of live births are affected by cytomegalovirus infection, but 90% of neonates with perinatal infection do not show symptoms of disease. Symptomatic cytomegalovirus (CMV) is present in 5-10% of children. Typical clinical signs of congenital cytomegalovirus infection are microcephalia, mental retardation, progressive major amblyacousia, and neuromuscular infection. Hypoacusis is present in 30-60% of children with congenital symptomatic CMV - in most cases it is bilateral and applies to high-frequency hearing loss. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of 70 children had serol

AutoAudio: Deep Learning for Automatic Audiogram Interpretation.

Hearing loss is the leading human sensory system loss, and one of the leading causes for years lived with disability with significant effects on quality of life, social isolation, and overall health. Coupled with a forecast of increased hearing loss burden worldwide, national and international health organizations have urgently recommended that access to hearing evaluation be expanded to meet demand. The objective of this study was to develop 'AutoAudio' - a novel deep learning proof-of-concept model that accurately and quickly interprets diagnostic audiograms. Adult audiogram reports represen
