A case of acquired amusia and misophonia following right temporal resection.

BACKGROUND: Our perception of the auditory world allows us to enjoy the richness of music and communicate effectively with others. These everyday processes are disrupted in conditions such as amusia, an inability to perceive music accurately, and misophonia, an intense emotional reaction to common sounds produced by others. We describe a case of acquired, concurrent amusia and misophonia in a 21-year-old right-handed woman following a right posterior insula, posterior temporal, supramarginal cortex, and sensory cortex resection for the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy. METHODS: The patien

The Effect of Speech Masking on the Human Subcortical Response to Continuous Speech.

Auditory masking-the interference of the encoding and processing of an acoustic stimulus imposed by one or more competing stimuli-is nearly omnipresent in daily life and presents a critical barrier to many listeners, including people with hearing loss, users of hearing aids and cochlear implants, and people with auditory processing disorders. The perceptual aspects of masking have been actively studied for several decades, and particular emphasis has been placed on masking of speech by other speech sounds. The neural effects of such masking, especially at the subcortical level, have been much

Frequency tagging to track the neural processing of contrast in fast, continuous sound sequences.

The human auditory system presents a remarkable ability to detect rapid changes in fast, continuous acoustic sequences, as best illustrated in speech and music. However, the neural processing of rapid auditory contrast remains largely unclear, probably due to the lack of methods to objectively dissociate the response components specifically related to the contrast from the other components in response to the sequence of fast continuous sounds. To overcome this issue, we tested a novel use of the frequency-tagging approach allowing contrast-specific neural responses to be tracked based on their

Individual differences in neurobehavioral measures of laterality and interhemispheric function as measured by dichotic listening.

This article presents analysis of dichotic listening performance in 57 healthy men and women aged 20 to 72 years. The data are presented as a means to cover 2 theoretical issues relevant to the biobehavioral study of laterality and interhemispheric relations. First, the sensitivity of dichotic listening performance to factors such as sex, age, and their interactions was examined. Dichotic listening asymmetry scores were found to vary as a function of sex, age, handedness, and family history of developmental language disorders. The effects of sex and age were then explored in relation to a comp

Perturbed sensory memory associated with schizotypy symptom load.

Impaired auditory event-related potential (ERP) components, including the N100 and MMN, are linked to sensory signatures of schizophrenia. Nonclinical individuals with schizophrenia-like traits (schizotypy) provide an attractive model for investigating these ERP biomarkers, as the individuals exhibit similar traits without clinical confounds (e.g., medications). The driving theoretical framework is that there is a continuum of traits that extends from the nonclinical population to patients diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). Here, we tested the prediction that nonclinical pa

Assessing tinnitus and prospective tinnitus therapeutics using a psychophysical animal model.

Subjective tinnitus is a common and often debilitating disorder that is difficult to study because it is a perceptual state without an objective stimulus correlate. Studying tinnitus in humans is further complicated by the heterogeneity of tinnitus quality, severity, and associated hearing loss. As a consequence, the pathophysiology of tinnitus is poorly understood and treatments are often unsuccessful. In the present study, an animal psychophysical model was developed to reflect several features of tinnitus observed in humans. Chronic tinnitus was induced in rats by a single intense unilatera

The connection between rhythmicity and brain function.

Although rhythm and music are not entirely synonymous terms, rhythm constitutes one of the most essential structural and organizational elements of music. When considering the effect of music on human adaptation, the profound effect of rhythm on the motor system strongly suggests that the time structure of music is the essential element relating music specifically to motor behavior. Why the motor system appears so sensitive to auditory priming and timing stimulation can only be partially answered so far. The high-performance function of the auditory system regarding processing of time informat

Grey matter volume in developmental speech and language disorder.

Developmental language disorder (DLD) and developmental speech disorder (DSD) are common, yet their etiologies are not well understood. Atypical volume of the inferior and posterior language regions and striatum have been reported in DLD; however, variability in both methodology and study findings limits interpretations. Imaging research within DSD, on the other hand, is scarce. The present study compared grey matter volume in children with DLD, DSD, and typically developing speech and language. Compared to typically developing controls, children with DLD had larger volume in the right cerebel

Directional effects between rapid auditory processing and phonological awareness in children.

BACKGROUND: Deficient rapid auditory processing (RAP) has been associated with early language impairment and dyslexia. Using an auditory masking paradigm, children with language disabilities perform selectively worse than controls at detecting a tone in a backward masking (BM) condition (tone followed by white noise) compared to a forward masking (FM) condition (tone preceded by white noise). Tallal's (1980) auditory processing hypothesis posits that abnormal RAP leads to reduced (or impaired) phonological awareness (PA), resulting in reading and language difficulties. Alternative theories sug

Diagnosis of spasmodic dysphonia manifested by swallowing difficulty in videofluoroscopic swallowing study.

Spasmodic dysphonia is defined as a focal laryngeal disorder characterized by dystonic spasms of the vocal cord during speech. We described a case of a 22-year-old male patient who presented complaining of idiopathic difficulty swallowing that suddenly developed 6 months ago. The patient also reported pharyngolaryngeal pain, throat discomfort, dyspnea, and voice change. Because laryngoscopy found no specific problems, an electrodiagnostic study and videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) were performed to find the cause of dysphagia. The VFSS revealed continuous twitch-like involuntary movem

Clinical Utility and Validation of the Acoustic Voice Quality and Acoustic Breathiness Indexes for Voice Disorder Assessment in English Speakers.

BACKGROUND: While several acoustic voice metrics are available for clinical voice assessment, there remains a significant need for reliable and ecologically valid tools. The Acoustic Voice Quality Index version 03.01 (AVQI-3) and Acoustic Breathiness Index (ABI) hold potential due to their comprehensive assessment approach, incorporating diverse voice aspects. However, these tools still need to be validated in English-speaking populations. METHODS: This study assessed the discriminatory accuracy and validity of AVQI-3 and ABI in 197 participants, including 148 with voice disorders. Voice samp

Synesthetic hallucinations induced by psychedelic drugs in a congenitally blind man.

This case report offers rare insights into crossmodal responses to psychedelic drug use in a congenitally blind (CB) individual as a form of synthetic synesthesia. BP's personal experience provides us with a unique report on the psychological and sensory alterations induced by hallucinogenic drugs, including an account of the absence of visual hallucinations, and a compelling look at the relationship between LSD induced synesthesia and crossmodal correspondences. The hallucinatory experiences reported by BP are of particular interest in light of the observation that rates of psychosis within t

Investigating speech perception in children with dyslexia: is there evidence of a consistent deficit in individuals?

PURPOSE: The claim that speech perception abilities are impaired in dyslexia was investigated in a group of 62 children with dyslexia and 51 average readers matched in age. METHOD: To test whether there was robust evidence of speech perception deficits in children with dyslexia, speech perception in noise and quiet was measured using 8 different tasks involving the identification and discrimination of a complex and highly natural synthetic "bee"-"pea" contrast (copy synthesized from natural models) and the perception of naturally produced words. RESULTS: Children with dyslexia, on average, p

Reduced sensitivity to slow-rate dynamic auditory information in children with dyslexia.

The etiology of developmental dyslexia remains widely debated. An appealing theory postulates that the reading and spelling problems in individuals with dyslexia originate from reduced sensitivity to slow-rate dynamic auditory cues. This low-level auditory deficit is thought to provoke a cascade of effects, including inaccurate speech perception and eventually unspecified phoneme representations. The present study investigated sensitivity to frequency modulation and amplitude rise time, speech-in-noise perception and phonological awareness in 11-year-old children with dyslexia and a matched no
