A total of 35,503 strains of Sh. sonnei were typed during the period from 1962 to 1974 at the Institute of Experimental Epidemiology. The principal method used was bacteriophage typing, and biochemical typing and determination of colicine formation served as auxiliary methods. Colicine type, resistogram and in some cases R-factor were determined in some of the strains. Such complex typing of Sh. sonnei is of value in epidemiological practice.

The vaginal microbiome, typically dominated by Lactobacillus species, plays a key role in reducing the risk of preterm birth (PTB) by protecting against infections. In this study, we sequenced 133 Lactobacillus genomes isolated from the reproductive tracts of pregnant Indian women. Genomic analysis identified genes linked to pathogen resistance and anti-inflammatory functions. Further proteome analysis of cell-free supernatant revealed antimicrobial properties, including lysin and bacteriocin, while antibacterial tests confirmed their ability to inhibit reproductive tract pathogens. These find

Staphylococcus epidermidis strain 115, used as an interfering agent to help reduce the incidence of staphylococcosis in turkeys, was converted into a penicillin- and chloramphenicol-resistant strain designated 115R. This was accomplished by introducing a plasmid carrying the beta-lactamase (penicillinase) and chloramphenicol-resistance genes into S. epidermidis 115 by electroporation. The resultant strain, 115R, was an efficient producer of beta-lactamase and had marked increased resistance to penicillin and chloramphenicol. A beta-lactamase DNA probe was used to confirm the presence of the be

Dental caries is a chronic infectious disease that occurs in the hard tissue of teeth under the influence of multiple factors, among which bacteria being a key factor. Streptococcus mutans ( S. mutans) is considered a major pathogen that causes caries. Secondary metabolites, including bacteriocins and polyketides/non-ribosomal peptides, are a class of small-molecule compounds synthesized by S. mutans. To date, polyketides/non-ribosomal peptides identified in S. mutans include mutanobactin, mutanocyclin, and mutanofactin, which are synthesized by the mub, muc, and muf biosynthetic gene clusters…

Fish is extremely perishable as a result of rapid microbial growth naturally present in fish or from contamination. Synthetic preservatives are widely used in fish storage to extend shelf life and maintain quality and safety. However, consumer preferences for natural preservatives and concerns about the safety of synthetic preservatives have prompted the food industry to search natural preservatives. Natural preservatives from microorganisms, plants, and animals have been shown potential in replacing the chemical antimicrobials. Bacteriocins and organic acids from bacteria showed good antimicr…

UNLABELLED: Serratia marcescens is a highly environmentally adaptable gram-negative bacterium which can be found in both free-living and host-associated lifestyles, where it can function as either a commensal or a pathogen. The diverse array of secreted factors produced by S. marcescens is suggested to facilitate this adaptability. Here, we describe and validate a class of secreted bacteriocins, called class II microcins, which have not previously been described in S. marcescens. Putative class II microcins are found in the majority (96%) of genomes analyzed here, including representative stra…

Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is a significant foodborne pathogen with considerable resilience in diverse environments. Following ingestion via contaminated food, LM can breach the intestinal barrier and infect target organs, causing systemic infection. This breach represents a critical step in its pathogenesis. The gut microbiota, a key component of intestinal defense, can restrict the colonization and invasion of the pathogen through mechanisms such as nutrient competition and bacteriocin production. In response, LM has evolved counterstrategies to enhance its survival and invasiveness in the

Plasmid DNA was isolated from Yersinia pestis strains containing pesticin I or fraction I antigen and "mouse" toxin determinants. Specificity of DNA preparations was studied by using them for transformation of plague agent strains carrying no plasmids. pPstI plasmid (molecular weight 7,0-7,8 MD) encoded pesticin I, fibrinolysin and plasmacoagulase synthesis. Fraction I antigen and "mouse" toxin production determinants were borne on pFraI/Tox plasmid (molecular weight about 50 MD). The observation that some Y. pestis cultures, having lost the ability to synthesize one of pFraI/Tox products, sti

Morganocin 174-induced lethality was characterized by one-hit kinetics. Although it induced simultaneous inhibition of deoxyribonucleic acid, ribonucleic acid, and protein syntheses, the most striking effect of morganocin was a rapid reduction of intracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate to less than 10% of the initial values within 2 min of addition. Accumulation of thymidine, uridine, glutamine, and proline was also inhibited. A gradual efflux of K(+) was observed, but the lethal effects of morganocin 174 could not be prevented by maintaining a high K(+) or Mg(2+) concentration. The Mor174 pla

OBJECTIVES: We report the in vivo trypanocidal activity of the bacteriocin AS-48 (lacking toxicity), which is produced by Enterococcus faecalis, against the flagellated protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, the aetiological agent of Chagas' disease.
METHODS: We determined the in vivo activity of AS-48 against the T. cruzi Arequipa strain in BALB/c mice (in both acute and chronic phases of Chagas' disease). We evaluated the parasitaemia, the reactivation of parasitaemia after immunosuppression and the nested parasites in the chronic phase by PCR in target tissues.
RESULTS: AS-48 reduced the parasitaem

Bacteriocinogeny was found in 19.8 per cent of Y. enterocolitica strains tested. It was designated by the authors as enterocoliticacinogeny and the substance produced by the pathogen was named enterocoliticacine. Bacteriocinogeny was found among the collection strains isolated in the South Primorye and not among the strains isolated abroad. Some cultures of Y. enterocolitica isolated abroad and in the South Primorye were used as indicator strains for revealing enterocoliticacinogeny. Enterocoliticacine inhibited growth only of some strains of Y. enterocolitica and had no inhibitory effect on g

Ligilactobacillus salivarius is a widely used probiotic in human and animal nutrition, particularly for enhancing performance in poultry farming. Supplementing feed with this bacterium has shown benefits such as reducing Salmonella Enteritidis colonization and promoting weight gain. This study investigated the probiotic potential of a newly isolated strain, L. salivarius L33, obtained from the gut of broiler chickens. We employed a series of in vitro tests to assess its probiotic characteristics. These tests evaluated its resistance to simulated digestive conditions, lack of hemolytic activity

UNLABELLED: Listeria monocytogenes can cause severe listeriosis, with the consumption of contaminated food being an important route of its transmission. Biopreservatives can be used for the prevention and control of L. monocytogenes in food. In this study, we identified a novel lantibiotic, mycoidesin, with potent bacteriostatic activity against L. monocytogenes. It exhibited 4- to 16-fold higher bacteriostatic activity against the L. monocytogenes strains than nisin A. Analysis of the mode of action of mycoidesin revealed that it exerted bacteriostatic activity against L. monocytogenes ATCC 1
