Efficient removal of ammonium and phosphorus from wastewater via potassium permanganate-modified Chinese medicine residues.

The disposal of Chinese medicine residues has become a pressing environmental issue in China due to the rapid expansion of the Chinese medicine industry. This study investigated the removal of ammonium and phosphate from wastewater by the use of potassium permanganate (KMnO4)-modified Chinese medicine residues. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of the KMnO4-modified residues (MR) for nitrogen and phosphorus was significantly enhanced, which was 1.23 and 1.27 times higher than that of unmodified residue (UR). Bohm titration showed a twofold increase in carboxyl groups, while FT-IR

Treatment-seeking behaviors and related epidemiological features in Korean acne patients.

Little is known about the treatment-seeking behaviors of acne patients, especially Asian acne patients. This study was performed to obtain detailed information about the treatment-seeking behaviors in Korean acne patients. Patients who visited the dermatology departments at 17 university hospitals completed a self-administered questionnaire. Most patients obtained information about acne from doctors or the Internet. The most important criteria for selecting a treatment method or choosing a particular clinic were effectiveness and accessibility. Patients used traditional medicine, visited beaut

PROMOTED-EM: Shifting Focus From Cataloging Barriers to Identifying Hidden Determinants of Advancement for Women in Academic Emergency Medicine.

Gender disparities in academic promotion persist despite decades of research documenting their scope. Women remain underrepresented at senior academic ranks in Emergency Medicine, with only 19% of full professors identifying as women. Existing literature has largely cataloged the barriers driving this gap-disproportionate clinical workloads, non-promotable labor burden, sponsorship deficits, and caregiving responsibilities-but has devoted comparatively little attention to the strategies women use to successfully navigate these barriers. This commentary proposes a shift in research focus: From

Sleep and Cardiometabolic Health: Integration Into Internal Medicine Practice.

Sleep is a critical and often underestimated determinant of cardiometabolic health, influencing neuroendocrine, inflammatory, and metabolic pathways. Sleep disorders are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. This article aims to review the main pathophysiological mechanisms linking sleep to cardiometabolic disease, summarize the most recent clinical evidence, and propose intervention strategies applicable to Internal Medicine practice. We conducted a narrative review of literature published between 2015

Advancing precision public health using human genomics: examples from the field and future research opportunities.

Precision public health is a relatively new field that integrates components of precision medicine, such as human genomics research, with public health concepts to help improve population health. Despite interest in advancing precision public health initiatives using human genomics research, current and future opportunities in this emerging field remain largely undescribed. To that end, we provide examples of promising opportunities and current applications of genomics research within precision public health and outline future directions within five major domains of public health: biostatistic

Nausea and Vomiting in 2021: A Comprehensive Update.

GOAL: A comprehensive review of treatments for nausea and vomiting (N/V). BACKGROUND: N/V are common symptoms encountered in medicine. While most cases of acute N/V related to a specific cause can be straightforward to manage, other cases of acute N/V such as chemotherapy-induced N/V and especially chronic unexplained N/V can be difficult to control, leading to a significant decline in the patient's quality of life and increased cost of medical care from repeated hospitalizations. STUDY: Traditional management has relied on pharmacotherapy which may be inadequate in a certain proportion of t

Physiological effects of light on the human circadian pacemaker.

The physiology of the human circadian pacemaker and its influence and on the daily organization of sleep, endocrine and behavioral processes is an emerging interest in science and medicine. Understanding the development, organization and fundamental properties underlying the circadian timing system may provide insight for the application of circadian principles to the practice of clinical medicine, both diagnostically (interpretation of certain clinical tests are dependent on time of day) and therapeutically (certain pharmacological responses vary with the time of day). The light-dark cycle is

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dispensing medicines in the community pharmacy.

BACKGROUND: The world has faced an unprecedented challenge since COVID-19 emerged as a pandemic, which has led to quarantine and disruptions in drug services. During the pandemic, drug use habits and availability changed, causing a shift in behaviors and, in turn, medicine misuse. In Iraq, this is a major problem because many medicines can be easily obtained. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to describe the pattern of dispensing medications during the pandemic and to evaluate the biochemical and pathological consequences. METHOD: The analytical, observational, cross-sectional study was performed vi

Sickness behaviour associated with non-lethal infections in wild primates.

Non-lethal parasite infections are common in wildlife, but there is little information on their clinical consequences. Here, we pair infection data from a ubiquitous soil-transmitted helminth, the whipworm (genus Trichuris), with activity data from a habituated group of wild red colobus monkeys (Procolobus rufomitratus tephrosceles) in Kibale National Park, Uganda. We use mixed-effect models to examine the relationship between non-lethal parasitism and red colobus behaviour. Our results indicate that red colobus increased resting and decreased more energetically costly behaviours when shedding

Antipruritic effects of the fruits of Chaenomeles sinensis.

A 35% EtOH extract of the fruits of Chaenomeles sinensis, long utilized as a folk medicine for cough, significantly inhibited the pruritogenic agent compound 48/80 (COM)-induced scratching behavior in mice. Antipruritic activity-guided fractionation and purification yielded active quercetin, apigenin, and catechin derivatives, which exhibited significant inhibitory effects on COM-induced scratching behavior. To the best of our knowledge, apigenin (5), apigenin 7-glucronide (6), and apigenin 4'-methoxy-7-glucronide (acacetin 7-glucronide) (7) were isolated from the fruits of C. sinensis for the

Self-Healing: A Concept for Musculoskeletal Body Pain Management - Scientific Evidence and Mode of Action.

Traditionally, musculoskeletal pain management has focused on the use of conventional treatments to relieve pain. However, multi-modal integrative medicine including alternative/complementary treatments is becoming more widely used and integrated into treatment guidelines around the world. The uptake of this approach varies according to country, with generally a higher uptake in developed countries and in females aged more than 40 years. Integral to the concept described here, is that the body has an innate ability to self-heal, which can be optimized by the use of integrative medical strategi

Male circumcision and penis enhancement in Southeast Asia: matters of pain and pleasure.

This paper reviews some uniquely male sexual health concerns in Southeast Asia, with particular attention to Indonesia. These include various forms of male circumcision, different types of 'penis enhancement' carried out across the region and the use of dry sex by women. These practices appear to be motivated by specific notions of sexual pleasure, based on indigenous gender constructs. Although they may or may not pose a serious public health problem, as markers of misguided or exploitative gender relations they do reveal important aspects of social psychology related to sexuality and sexual
