The Association between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Alcohol Use during Pregnancy in a Representative Sample of Adult Women.

BACKGROUND: The impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on adult alcohol consumption is well-established, but little is known about the association with alcohol use during pregnancy. METHODS: Using data from the 2010 Nevada Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we assessed the relationship between ACEs and alcohol use during pregnancy in a representative sample of 1,987 adult women. An established ACEs scale was used to assess a range of childhood physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and household dysfunction (range, 0-8). Weighted logistic regression was used to assess the rela…

Disability and Exposure to High Levels of Adverse Childhood Experiences: Effect on Health and Risk Behavior.

BACKGROUND: Health disparities among persons with disabilities have been previously documented. However, there is little research specific to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in this population and how ACE exposure affects health outcomes in adulthood. METHODS: Data from the 2012 North Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey were analyzed to compare the prevalence of ACEs between adults with and without disabilities and high ACE exposure (3-8 ACEs). Adjusted risk ratios of health risks and perceived poor health by disability status were calculated using predicte…

Adverse childhood event subtypes and routine diabetes care utilization among U.S. adults with Type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood events (ACEs) have significant impacts on adulthood health, including greater risk of Type 2 diabetes (T2D). While there is a known connection to increased use of outpatient and emergency healthcare services, the potential role of ACEs in routine diabetes care utilization remains unclear. This study uses ACE subtypes to explain pathways to routine diabetes care utilization among adults with T2D. METHOD: Cross-sectional data were obtained from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a survey of a representative sample of U.S. adults. Eligible participa…

Socioeconomic and health disparities in adults diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus before age 18: insights from the Italian PASSI surveillance system.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a lifelong condition with consequences that extend well beyond glycaemic control, often impacting individuals' socioeconomic status and overall quality of life. In Italy, the broader effects of early-onset type 1 diabetes on social and health-related outcomes have been insufficiently investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the socioeconomic impacts of type 1 diabetes among adults diagnosed with the condition before age 18. METHODS: Using data from the Italian Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (PASSI) collected between 2011 and …

Income Inequality and Self-Reported Health: A Difference-in-Differences Study.

BACKGROUND: Health disparities in the United States (US) are closely linked to income inequality. While many studies have reported associations between income and health, causal evidence remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the causal effect of income-equalizing state policies, such as minimum wage increases, Medicaid expansion, and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) adjustments, on adult self-rated health using a difference-in-differences (DiD) framework. METHODS: Using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data from 2018 to …

Cancer disparities by age: a focus on sexual and gender minorities.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine the age at which sexual and gender minorities are diagnosed with cancer relative to heterosexual cisgender individuals. METHODS: We use population-based representative Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey data with self-reported sexual orientation, gender identity, cancer diagnoses, and the age at diagnosis. We determined the mean age at diagnosis and used logistic regression modeling to obtain odds ratios, reporting significant differences defined as p < 0.05. Separately, we adjusted for race/ethnicity and corrected for underlying differ

Developing an HIV behavioral surveillance system for injecting drug users: the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System.

While disease surveillance for HIV/AIDS is now widely conducted in the United States, effective HIV prevention programs rely primarily on changing behavior; therefore, behavioral data are needed to inform these programs. To achieve the goal of reducing HIV infections in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in cooperation with state and local health departments, implemented the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS) for injecting drug users (IDUs) in 25 selected metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) throughout the United States in 2005. The surveillance system u

Exchange Sex and HIV Infection Among Women Who Inject Drugs-20 US Cities, 2009.

BACKGROUND: Women who inject drugs and who also exchange sex are at increased risk for HIV infection, but data on this population in the United States remain sparse. METHODS: This study assessed the prevalence of exchanging sex for money or drugs among women who inject drugs using data from the 2009 US National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system. Prevalence of being HIV-positive (testing positive in NHBS), HIV-positive-unaware (reporting being HIV-negative or unknown status but testing positive in NHBS), and risk behaviors and use of services were compared between women who did and did

The experience of adverse childhood experiences and dental care in childhood.

OBJECTIVES: Routine preventive dental care is important to overall child health and well-being. However, the experience of adversity in childhood may prevent children from getting adequate preventive care. This study seeks to explore how the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the role of a protective adult may be associated with dental care utilization in childhood. METHODS: Data from the 2016 South Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (SC BRFSS), which interviews adults eighteen year of age and older, were used in this study. Dental care utilization in chil…

Cannabis vaping among adults in the United States: Prevalence, trends, and association with high-risk behaviors and adverse respiratory conditions.

The e-cigarette or vaping product-use-associated lung injury outbreak in the United States has raised concerns about the potential health effects of cannabis vaping, a method of cannabis use that is becoming increasingly popular. We used 2017-2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data to estimate yearly prevalence and trends of past-30-day cannabis use and vaping among US adults. We used multivariable logistic regression to evaluate the associations of cannabis vaping with high-risk behaviors, asthma, and other respiratory symptoms. Our sample size was 160,209 (53,945-2017; 55,475-20…

Poor sleep duration and E-cigarette/Cigarette use among US adults with cardiovascular diseases: findings from the 2022 BRFSS cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Studies have explored the connections between tobacco use, sleep and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risks in adults, but no study has examined the link between tobacco use and sleep among adults with CVDs. This study explores the association between tobacco use (cigarette only, e-cigarette only, and dual use) and poor sleep duration among adults with CVDs. METHODS: A sample of 47,180 US adults with CVDs (myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease, or stroke) was drawn from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) cross-sectional survey. Poor/inadequate sleep (<…

Risk Behaviors Correlate with Higher Prevalence of Papanicolaou, Human Papillomavirus, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Screening Among Women in the United States.

Introduction: This study assesses whether women with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk behavior have higher Papanicolaou (Pap), human papillomavirus (HPV), and HIV testing, and whether the level of selected variables associated with HIV risk behavior correlate with greater testing. Association between HIV risk situations and HPV vaccination is also evaluated. Methods: A cross-sectional assessment was performed in women at age 18 years and older completing the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey. Independent variables considered and adjusted for, included age, r…

Does Sexual Orientation Complicate the Relationship Between Marital Status and Gender With Self-rated Health and Cardiovascular Disease?

A substantial body of work has demonstrated the importance of marital status for health, yet the vast majority of this work has studied heterosexual marriages and relationships. To understand the role of marital status in shaping health among heterosexual, lesbian, gay, and bisexual men and women, we examine data from a probability-based sample of adults living in 40 U.S. states for selected years between 2011-2015. We test two physical health outcomes-poor-to-fair self-rated health and cardiovascular disease-and present predicted probabilities and pairwise comparisons from logistic regression

Self-Measured Blood Pressure Monitoring Among Adults With Self-Reported Hypertension in 20 US States and the District of Columbia, 2019.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Achieving hypertension control requires multiple supportive inventions, including self-measured blood pressure (SMBP) monitoring. The objective of this study is to report the use of SMBP among US adults. METHODS: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data were used for this study. The 2019 survey included, for the first time, an optional SMBP module. Twenty states and the District of Columbia (N = 159,536) opted to include the module, which assessed whether participants were advised by a healthcare professional t…

Clinical surveillance systems obscure the true cholera infection burden in an endemic region.

Our understanding of cholera transmission and burden largely relies on clinic-based surveillance, which can obscure trends, bias burden estimates and limit the impact of targeted cholera-prevention measures. Serological surveillance provides a complementary approach to monitoring infections, although the link between serologically derived infections and medically attended disease incidence-shaped by immunological, behavioral and clinical factors-remains poorly understood. We unravel this cascade in a cholera-endemic Bangladeshi community by integrating clinic-based surveillance, healthcare-see

Health ramifications of antitransgender legislation: Trends in mental distress from 2016 to 2023 in a nationally representative sample of transgender adults.

Laws and policies that target and restrict transgender- and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) individuals are increasing in the United States. Despite limited prior research, studies using nationally representative samples are needed to examine how these policies relate to TGNC mental health. This study used two data sources: the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System for population mental health metrics and the Movement Advancement Project policy tallies. Using pooled annual state-based data from probability-based samples of adults from 2016 to 2023, we examined differences in prevalence and te…
