Carbon dioxide-induced panic attacks and quantitative electroencephalogram in panic disorder patients.

The objective of the study was to investigate and compare the brain cortical activity, as indexed by quantitative electroencephalographic (qEEG) power, coherence and asymmetry measures, in panic disorder (PD) patients during an induced panic attack with a 35% CO(2) challenge test and also in a resting condition. Fifteen subjects with PD were randomly assigned to both 35% CO(2) mixture and atmospheric compressed air, in a double-blind study design, with EEG being recorded for a 20-min period. During induced panic attacks we found a reduced right-sided frontal orbital asymmetry in the beta band,

Beta cell secreted GABA sets appropriate insulin secretion by modulating islet calcium oscillations.

OBJECTIVES: Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is produced in pancreatic beta cells and is implicated in modulating islet function, yet its precise physiological role remains uncertain. This study aimed to determine the function of endogenous beta cell-derived GABA on insulin secretion and islet calcium dynamics by developing a conditional beta cell-specific knockout of GABA-synthesizing enzymes (GAD65 and GAD67). METHODS: Conditional knockout mice (GadβKO) lacking both GAD65 and GAD67 specifically in pancreatic beta cells were generated. Glucose-stimulated insulin secretion was measured in isola

Unveiling the Causal Role of Auditory Theta Rhythms in Musical Pleasure: A Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation/Electroencephalogram Study.

The enjoyment of music involves a complex interplay between brain perceptual areas and the reward network. While previous studies have shown that musical liking is related to an enhancement of synchronization between the right temporal and frontal brain regions via theta frequency band oscillations, the underlying mechanisms of this interaction remain elusive. Specifically, a causal relationship between theta oscillations and musical pleasure has yet to be shown. In the present study, we address this question by using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). Twenty-four participant

Enhancing visual perception by modulating prestimulus alpha and beta power with tRNS.

Visual variability is linked to prestimulus alpha (8-13 Hz) and beta (13-30 Hz) power fluctuations, yet their causal role remains unclear. Using transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS), we tested whether externally modulating cortical excitability could influence these oscillations and alter perception. In a sham-controlled, within-subject design, 29 participants completed a visual detection task combined with electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) recordings. Mental fatigue was modelled as a state-dependent factor. tRNS, primarily under low fatigue

Subthalamic dynamic neural states correlate with motor symptoms in Parkinson's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to discriminate the dynamic synchronization states from the subthalamic local field potentials and investigate their correlations with the motor symptoms in Parkinson's Disease (PD). METHODS: The resting-state local field potentials of 10 patients with PD were recorded from the subthalamic nucleus. The dynamic neural states of multiple oscillations were discriminated and analyzed. The Spearman correlation was used to investigate the correlations between occurrence rate or duration of dynamic neural states and the severity of motor symptoms. RESULTS: The proportion

Frontal delta-beta cross-frequency coupling in high and low social anxiety: An index of stress regulation?

Cross-frequency coupling (CFC) between frontal delta (1-4 Hz) and beta (14-30 Hz) oscillations has been suggested as a candidate neural correlate of social anxiety disorder, a disorder characterized by fear and avoidance of social and performance situations. Prior studies have used amplitude-amplitude correlation (AAC) as a CFC measure and hypothesized it as a candidate neural mechanism of affective control. However, using this metric has yielded inconsistent results regarding the direction of CFC, and the functional significance of coupling strength is uncertain. To offer a better understandi

Supraspinal convulsions induced by inverse benzodiazepine agonists in rabbits.

The electroencephalographic (EEG) effects of inverse benzodiazepine (BDZ) agonists have been studied in rabbits after i.v. administration. A dose-dependent progression of three different stages of EEG changes have been observed with inverse BDZ agonists. At first, trains of slow waves in the occipital cortex occur, followed by trains of spike-and-wave complexes in the sensorimotor cortex. These two stages are superimposed on a desynchronized cortical activity, accompanied by an enhancement of the hippocampal theta rhythm. These EEG changes parallel a state of alertness. The third stage is char

[Sotalol and quinidine/verapamil (Cordichin) in chronic atrial fibrillation--conversion and 12-month follow-up--a randomized comparison].

Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common arrhythmias, leading at least in a subset of patients to severe symptoms (palpitations, weakness, syncope), and to hemodynamic impairment especially in the clinical setting of left ventricular dysfunction. Thus, in many cases restauration of sinus rhythm is indicated because of the negative effects of reduced cardiac output. Quinidine has been the first line drug for many years and has been proven to be highly effective especially when combined with Verapamil. But there is growing concern about using quinidine and other class I-anti-arrhythmic agen

[Practical attitude toward arrhythmia in the neonate and infant].

Arrhythmias in neonates and infants require a specific management due to the particular nature of the rhythm anomalies in children. Accurate diagnosis of the tachycardia is realised mainly by means of ECG recording and vagal manoeuvres. The nature of the tachycardia will determine management, therapy and prognosis. In neonates <3 months, supraventricular tachycardia due to Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome represents 70% of all supraventricular tachycardias, which, after conversion by vagal manoeuvres, requires a preventive treatment by digoxine (10 y/kg/day tid). Neonatal flutter occurs in infan

Intrauterine therapy of fetal tachyarrhythmias: intraperitoneal administration of antiarrhythmic drugs to the fetus in fetal tachyarrhythmias with severe hydrops fetalis.

In cases of fetal tachyarrhythmia with congestive heart failure accompanied by signs of non-immune hydrops fetalis, the transplacental treatment of the fetus with antiarrhythmic agents by administration of drugs to the mother is only rarely successful. In the two cases reported, the cardioversion of a supraventricular tachycardia to a sinus rhythm or a constant 2:1 AV conduction block to a 1:1 AV conduction with atrial flutter could only be achieved after additional antiarrhythmic treatment directly administered to the fetus using ultrasound guidance. Drugs used include: beta-methyldigoxin, ve

Pharmacological investigation of vitamin E with combined oral contraceptives on INHBA gene against PCOS that intricate through melatonin PKC pathway.

The most prevalent endocrine and metabolic condition in women of reproductive age are polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) with significant risk factors such as circadian rhythm and melatonin disruption. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of vitamin E in combination with a combined oral contraceptive (COC) on continuous light-induced PCOS using hormonal measures, oxidative stress (OS) indicators, and the inhibin beta-A (INHBA) gene, which targets the melatonin protein kinase C (PKC) pathway. An in silico technique anticipated INHBA's binding affinity for vitamin E and COC. For the in vi

Circadian Rhythm Disruption Aggravates DSS-Induced Colitis in Mice with Fecal Calprotectin as a Marker of Colitis Severity.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic immunologically mediated pathology that remains a major health burden. Circadian rhythm disruption leads to a deregulation in the immune system which is a major risk factor for IBD. AIMS: Since fecal calprotectin (FC) has been a useful tool for monitoring IBD, we aimed to evaluate the effect of circadian rhythm alteration on gut inflammation status and whether FC is associated with the severity of colitis. METHODS: C57BL/6J mice were exposed to circadian shifts for 3 months, and then colitis was induced by 2% dextran sulfate sodium (D

Volitional modulation of beta-band EMG coherence through frequency-specific neurofeedback.

Electromyography (EMG) feedback, which records and visually presents muscle activity, has been widely employed to enhance motor control and support rehabilitation. While its effectiveness has been demonstrated across various conditions, most EMG feedback protocols have focused on modulating activity in individual muscles, with limited emphasis on promoting coordinated neuromuscular control. This study investigated the feasibility of enhancing neuromuscular coordination through feedback training designed to increase beta band (15-35 Hz) intramuscular coherence. Twenty-two healthy participants w
