Condom use among gay/bisexual male substance abusers using the timeline follow-back method.

Sexual risk for HIV transmission under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs is not simply a cause-effect relationship: not everyone who drinks or uses other drugs has unprotected sex. The purpose of this study is to explore differences between substance using gay/bisexual men who use condoms during anal sex from those who do not. These differences are identified by comparing men whose anal sex while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs is consistently protected to men whose anal sex while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs is consistently unprotected. Gay/bisexual men en

Reproductive development of female Schistosoma mansoni (Digenea: Schistosomatidae) following bisexual pairing of worms and worm segments.

Maturation and maintenance of normal reproductive function in female Schistosoma mansoni require a permanent association with the male, but the nature of this relationship is not well understood. The regional localization of a stimulatory factor in the male and its target in the female were investigated. Unisexual female and mature male worms were transected into segments of various lengths. Various combinations of transected male and female segments and intact worms were transferred to the mesenteric veins of recipient hamsters and were also maintained in vitro. In hamsters and in vitro, pair

Childhood Gender Nonconformity and Suicidal Behavior in Chinese Gay and Bisexual Men: The Roles of Childhood Abuse and Social Inhibition.

The relationship between childhood gender nonconformity (CGN) and suicidal behavior among gay and bisexual men, along with its underlying mechanisms, need more exploration, especially in the Chinese context, a collectivistic culture emphasizing conformity to strict gender norms. This study aimed to examine the relationship between CGN and suicidal behavior and the mediating role of childhood abuse (i.e., physical, psychological, and sexual abuse) and social inhibition in this relationship among gay and bisexual men. A sample of 450 Chinese participants, consisting of 211 gay men and 239 bisexu

Social-Cognitive and Identity-Related Factors Promoting Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Uptake Among Bisexual Men.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is the cornerstone of HIV prevention in the United States, yet uptake remains low among bisexual men compared to gay men. Theory-driven communication interventions have promise for addressing this disparity. Prior research among gay and bisexual men has shown that the Reasoned Action Approach (RAA) can predict PrEP intentions through attitudes, norms, and perceived behavioral control, while other studies highlight the influence of sexual identity-related stressors on prevention behaviors. However, bisexual men remain underrepresented in this work. This study sou

Health Promotion Opportunities for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual People: Using Data From the New Zealand Health Survey.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Health inequity for sexual minority (lesbian, gay and bisexual) people compared with heterosexual people is well documented globally. However, limited local data have been used to inform health policy and practice. This project analysed data from the New Zealand Health Survey to determine areas of inequity in health behaviours and identify opportunities for health promotion action. METHODS: We used pooled data from six waves of the New Zealand Health Survey (from 2015/2016 to 2020/2021). The sample for analysis comprised 67 426 people aged 15 years and older, including 1224 s

Plant volatiles-loaded core-shell micro-nano fibers to achieve efficient and sustained bisexual attraction to pests.

BACKGROUND: Chemical pesticides face significant challenges regarding their efficacy and environmental impact. Plant-based food attractants have emerged as a promising green alternative for pest control. However, their field application is limited by the short duration of effectiveness, necessitating improved carrier systems for sustained release. Electrospinning is a promising technology in this field, with core-shell fibers offering superior performance in efficient loading and sustained release compared to uniaxial fibers, highlighting their potential for further development. RESULTS: In t

Culturally Responsive Outreach and Peer Navigation to Improve HIV Prevention and Care for Latino Gay and Bisexual Men in Atlanta.

To evaluate the implementation outcomes of a culturally responsive social media outreach campaign and peer navigation program to improve access to HIV status-neutral sexual health services-which encompass both HIV prevention and care, regardless of HIV status-for Latino gay and bisexual men (LGBM) in metropolitan Atlanta. We designed and implemented a social media outreach campaign linked to a peer navigation program. The study included four stages: peer navigator recruitment/training, social media campaign development, program implementation, and exit interviews. Data from social media engage

Hepatitis C virus reinfection incidence among gay and bisexual men with HIV in Australia from 2016 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: There is some concern that hepatitis C virus (HCV) reinfection might impact HCV micro-elimination efforts among gay and bisexual men (GBM) with HIV. However, there is a limited understanding of reinfection incidence in the context of unrestricted government-funded HCV treatment. We aimed to estimate HCV reinfection incidence among GBM with HIV in Australia from 2016 to 2020. METHODS: Data were from 39 clinics participating in ACCESS, a sentinel surveillance network for blood borne viruses and sexually transmissible infections across Australia. GBM with HIV who had evidence of trea

Bias and Discrimination Against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Parents Accessing Care for Their Children: A Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: The experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) parents of children with developmental disabilities (DDs) in health and early learning systems are largely understudied. Inclusive, affirming services are critical to timely identification and intervention for DDs. This literature review aimed to establish whether LGBTQ parents experience structural bias and discrimination when accessing care for their children in health and early learning systems. METHODS: PubMed, ERIC, and Scopus were searched for empirical research from 1990 to 2020 on: LGBTQ; parents, ch

Functional characterization of differentially expressed proteins coming from unisexual and bisexual infected Schistosoma japonicum female worms.

Schistosomiasis is an important zoonotic disease affecting up to 40 kinds of animals and is responsible for ∼250 million human cases per year. Due to the extensive use of praziquantel for the treatment of parasitic diseases, drug resistance has been reported. Consequently, novel drugs and effective vaccines are urgently needed for sustained control of schistosomiasis. Targeting reproductive development of Schistosoma japonicum could contribute to the control of schistosomiasis. In this study, five highly expressed proteins (S. japonicum large subunit ribosomal protein L7e, S. japonicum glutath

Examining whether the impact of different types of interpersonal violence and mental disorders on attempted suicide is greater for bisexual women.

OBJECTIVE: This national study examined whether different types of interpersonal violence and mental disorders were associated with greater risk for attempted suicide among bisexual women than heterosexual women. METHOD: Data were used from participants in Wave II of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions in the United States of America who identified as female and either heterosexual or bisexual (N = 19,261; 71% White). Logistic regression models tested the main and interactive effects of three types of interpersonal violence (i.e., childhood abuse, childhood neg

Sexual Assault, Psychological Distress, and Protective Factors in a Community Sample of Black, Latinx, and White Lesbian and Bisexual Women.

Intersectionality and minority stress frameworks were used to guide examination and comparisons of psychological distress (depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms) and protective factors (religiosity, spirituality, social support) among 673 Black, Latinx, and White lesbian and bisexual women with and without histories of sexual assault. Participants were from Wave 3 of the 21-year longitudinal Chicago Health and Life Experiences of Women (CHLEW) study. More than one-third (38%) of participants reported having experienced adolescent or adult sexual assault (i.e., rape or ano

Social Media Use and Health and Well-being of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Youth: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals are at higher risk of poor mental health and well-being. Social media platforms can provide LGBTQ youths with a space that counters heteronormative environments and potentially supports mental health and well-being. Mental health includes an individual's state of psychological and emotional well-being and not merely the absence of mental disorders. OBJECTIVE: We sought to identify how LGBTQ youths and adolescents use social media for connection with other LGBTQ peers and groups, identity development, and social sup

Sexual excitation and sex-linked substance use predict overall cannabis use in mostly heterosexual and bisexual women.

Background: Bisexual and mostly heterosexual women report higher substance use than exclusively heterosexual or lesbian women. In sexual minority men, sex-linked substance use (SLSU) can increase risk for substance use problems; equivalent research in women is lacking. Objectives: To test if sexual excitation and inhibition mediate the association between sexual minority status and women's SLSU.Methods: We surveyed a convenience sample of 595 undergraduate women who identified as exclusively heterosexual (n = 499), mostly heterosexual (n = 59), or bisexual (n = 37). Optimizing outpatient treatment outcomes among methamphetamine-using gay and bisexual men through a computerized depression intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Depression is a common sequelae of frequent methamphetamine use, and may influence rates of engagement in sexual risk-taking among methamphetamine-using cisgender gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). The study team hypothesized that layering a brief, computerized depression intervention (i.e., MoodGym; based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy [CBT] and Interpersonal Therapy) on top of a long-running outpatient methamphetamine treatment program (based on CBT and Contingency Management) for GBMSM could optimize reductions in methamphetamine use and sexual risk-t
