Detection of parvovirus and herpesvirus DNA in the blood of feline and canine blood donors.

With the increase of blood transfusion in veterinary medicine, the presence of endemic viral agents in the blood should be carefully investigated. For this reason, the blood of feline and canine blood donors was screened to detect the presence of herpesviruses, especially gammaherpesviruses and parvoviruses, and to characterize the viruses detected. A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed on 31 cats and 54 dogs, enrolled as voluntary blood donors. Nested PCR was carried out to detect herpesvirus and parvovirus DNA. Sequencing and real-time PCR were used to confirm and quantify posi

Detecting Pharmaceuticals in the Red Blood Cell Inventory of a Hospital Blood Bank.

We tested 220 red blood cell units for the presence of pharmaceuticals; 15 units (6.8%) were confirmed to contain low concentrations of opiates, benzodiazepines, stimulants, or barbiturates. Further study is needed to determine whether these drugs, which are not prohibited in donated blood by current Food and Drug Administration standards, could mediate adverse reactions in children.

Appropriate timing of blood sampling for blood gas analysis in the ventilated rabbit.

BACKGROUND: Arterial and venous blood gas analyses (BGAs) are essential to evaluate devices that measure biological oxygenation. The appropriate timing of blood sampling for BGA after respiratory rate (RR) change in animal experiments has not been reported. This study investigated the appropriate timing of blood sampling for BGA in ventilated rabbits and whether venous samples are an alternative to arterial samples. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Under general anesthesia, 14 rabbits (body weight, 3.02 ± 0.09 kg) were ventilated and their RR was changed (40/min, 30/min, and 20/min). Blood was sampled

Worldwide policies on haemochromatosis and blood donation: a survey among blood services.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Haemochromatosis (HC) is a disorder of iron metabolism, requiring frequent phlebotomy to normalize high serum iron levels. There is currently no consensus relating to the eligibility of these patients to donate blood for transfusion. To gain a better understanding of the policies worldwide, a survey amongst blood services was performed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A web-based questionnaire was developed and distributed among 44 blood services in 41 countries to identify the different policies relating to patients with HC and blood donation. RESULTS: Respondents from 35

Fear-related predictors of vasovagal symptoms during blood donation: it's in the blood.

A recent theory proposes that emotional fainting developed from an earlier adaptive characteristic, fainting in response to hemorrhage. Despite potential loss of consciousness, a dramatic decrease in blood pressure improves chances of survival in animals with severe wounds by reducing blood loss and facilitating clotting. Humans may have developed the characteristic of emotional fainting as a response to anticipated blood loss. This idea suggests that people with stronger fears of blood should be especially susceptible to fainting and milder vasovagal symptoms such as dizziness and lightheaded

Reference ranges for blood concentrations of nucleated red blood cells in neonates.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies reported a relationship between high nucleated red blood cells (NRBC) in neonates and the development of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and/or retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). OBJECTIVE: We sought to (1) establish reference ranges for NRBC in neonates based on a large data set, (2) compare NRBC from automated versus manual counts, (3) determine the effect of an elevated NRBC, on the day of birth, on the odds of developing grade ≥3 IVH or ROP. METHODS: We analyzed all NRBC obtained during 8.5 years in a multihospital system, displaying the 5th and 95th percent

Characteristics of blood donors and donated blood in sub-Saharan Francophone Africa.

BACKGROUND: The importance of blood safety in public health was recognized long ago, and data are essential to plan strategies to improve the status. This study aims to obtain data on blood donor and blood donation characteristics that would complement blood safety data from national and international organizations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to seven Francophone countries (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, and Rwanda) and was structured to obtain objective data on blood donors and donated blood and in administrative and technical organization. Effects of intermittent hypoxia on blood gases plasma catecholamine and blood pressure.

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a disorder characterized by repetitive episodes of complete (apnoea) or partial (hypopnoea) obstruction of airflow during sleep. The severity of OSAS is defined by the apnoea hypopnoea index (AHI) or number of obstructive episodes. An AHI greater than 30 is considered severe, but it can reach values higher than 100 in some patients. Associated to the OSA there is high incidence of cardiovascular and neuro-psychiatric pathologies including systemic hypertension, stroke, cardiac arrhythmias and atherosclerosis, diurnal somnolence, anxiety and depressio

Feasibility of blood pressure telemonitoring in patients with poor blood pressure control.

We examined the feasibility of using home blood pressure (BP) telemonitoring devices for managing patients with poor BP control. We enrolled 591 subjects with a diagnosis of hypertension. Patients were randomized to usual care (n = 147) or to the intervention arm (n = 441). Those in the intervention arm were issued with a home BP telemonitoring device. The device transmitted BP readings automatically via the home telephone line. Technical alerts were generated if patients did not transmit their BP readings according to the protocol. During the first six months, 693 technical alerts were genera

Blood sampling without blood draws for in vivo pharmacokinetic studies in rats.

PURPOSE: Pharmacokinetic (PK) studies in rats typically involve removal of serial blood samples following dosing. This research illustrates the development of a fast in vivo microextraction technique that has the potential to partly replace current sampling techniques based on blood draws, especially in the case of small animals. METHODS: The proposed sampling procedure is based on solid phase microextraction (SPME), an approach that has continued to revolutionize sampling and sample preparation ever since its discovery a decade ago. In vivo microextraction is faster than conventional methods

Prognostic value of blood lactate, blood glucose, and hematocrit in canine babesiosis.

Canine babesiosis typically causes hemolytic anemia but also can result in multiple organ dysfunction. Human patients with severe disease often have persistent hyperlactatemia, and blood lactate concentration is correlated with survival rate. In dogs, blood lactate concentration has been shown to be of prognostic value in patients with gastric dilatation-volvulus and in dogs admitted to intensive care units. Serial blood lactate and glucose concentrations and hematocrit on admission were determined in 90 dogs with naturally occurring, severe or complicated canine babesiosis. Forty-five dogs (5

Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: risk of transmission by blood and blood products.

Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a novel acquired human prion disease apparently resulting from exposure to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent. Variant CJD differs from other human prion diseases in that the disease-associated form of the prion protein and infectivity are readily detectable in lymphoid tissues throughout the body. Lymphoid tissues and lymphocytes are implicated in the peripheral pathogenesis of prion diseases (where infectivity may be detected during the preclinical phase of the illness), giving rise to concerns that blood and blood products may also co

Cord blood from collection to expansion: feasibility in a regional blood bank.

This article reviews the various aspect of the experimental phase preceding the establishment of an umbilical cord blood (UCB) bank within a regular blood bank, a situation totally different from that of de novo establishing a cord blood bank having human and financial resources. An ethically approved two-year study has been conducted to determine the technical feasibility, and the practical problems that might be encountered such as public compliance, the additional workload, introduction of new activities ranging from collection and processing to progenitor expansion, infectious disease test

The walking blood bank: an alternative blood supply in military mass casualties.

Planning health care for unknown situations is inevitably difficult. This case demonstrates how the US Navy used the WBB to provide blood replacement in a hemorrhaging patient when no other source of blood was available. Although transfusion at sea is a rare event, the availability of a well-planned blood transfusion program prevented a fatality and ultimately returned a sailor to his ship. It was an excellent test of materials, process, and personnel.

HIV prevalence among blood donors in a blood bank in Curitiba (Brazil).

There still is no cure for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Its etiologic agent is the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and transmission occurs through sexual relationships, contacts with blood, and vertically (mother to child). In this study, we sought to determine the prevalence of HIV among blood donors at a blood bank in Curitiba. We studied 213,666 blood donations made from March 1, 1992, to April 25, 1999. Each potential blood donor first answered a questionnaire, submitted to a clinical examination, and filled out a self-exclusion card. Blood was collected and analyzed

Effect of number of blood cultures and volume of blood on detection of bacteremia in children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether bacteremia can be detected more rapidly and completely by (1) obtaining two blood cultures instead of one and/or (2) collecting a larger volume of blood. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective comparison of different strategies in 300 patients undergoing blood culture for suspected bacteremia. Each patient had two samples of blood, A (2 ml) and B (9.5 ml), obtained sequentially from separate sites. The B sample was divided into three aliquots: B1 (2 ml), B2 (6 ml), and ISO (1.5 ml, quantitative culture). RESULTS: A pathogen was isolated from one or more blood cultures in 3
