The relationship between premorbid intelligence and symptoms of severe anorexia nervosa restricting type.

The purposes of this study were as follows: to compare premorbid IQ with present IQ in patients with more severe anorexia nervosa restrictin … AN-R group, a significantly high positive correlation was found between changes in the PIQ and the body dissatisfaction subscale of the EDI-2. These findings raise the possibility that in patients with severe AN-R, an excessive decrease in body weight induces decreased PIQ; as a result, they have worse dissatisfaction with their body shape.

Replication and extension of the dual pathway model of disordered eating: The role of fear of negative evaluation, suggestibility, rumination, and self-compassion.

OBJECTIVE: The dual pathway model, a theoretical model of eating disorder development, suggests that thin ideal internalization leads to body dissatisfaction which leads to disordered eating via the dual pathways of negative affect and dietary restraint. While the dual pathway model has been a valuable guide for eating disorder prevention, greater knowledge of characteristics that predict thin ideal internalization is needed. METHOD: The present study replicated and extended the dual pathway model by considering the addition of fear of negative evaluation, suggestibility, rumination, and self…

Exploring the integration of thin-ideal internalization and self-objectification in the prevention of eating disorders.

Analyses of thin-ideal internalization and self-objectification were conducted within the context of a cognitive dissonance based eating disorder prevention program implemented in an undergraduate sorority. Participants completed self-report assessments at baseline (n=177), post-intervention (n=169), 5-month (n=159), and 1-year follow-up (n=105). Cross-sectional path analysis indicated that thin-ideal internalization and self-objectification predict each other and both predict body dissatisfaction, which in turn, predicts eating disorder symptoms. A longitudinal examination conducted using hie…

The influence of personality traits on body image in female patients with an eating disorder versus a dual diagnosis: A cross-sectional study.

Body dissatisfaction (BD) is well-studied in eating disorder (ED) populations but remains unexplored in dual diagnosis (DD) populations, such as co-occurring ED and substance use disorder. This cross-sectional study compared BD levels between ED and DD groups and examined the influence of personality traits. Sixty-five female patients with either an ED (n = 39; Mage = 26.8, SD = 8.8) or DD (n = 26; Mage = 28.9, SD = 8.4) completed standardized measures of BD and personality traits. Descriptive statistics, group comparisons, and linear regression analyses were conducted. BD levels did not signi…

Psychological flexibility as a mediator and mechanism of change in disordered eating: A systematic review.

Psychological flexibility (PF) is increasingly considered as a prospective mediator of disordered eating, due to its contextual nature and t … among thirteen risk factors and disordered eating levels in cross-sectional studies, including BMI, body dissatisfaction, self-esteem and external shame. However, the intervention studies showed little confidence for PF to be a successful mechanism of change, potentially due to methodological concerns. The strongest effects were indicated for high-weight individuals a …

Auditory attentional biases in young males with physical stature dissatisfaction.

The attentional biases toward body-related information for individuals with weight concerns and eating disorders have been well documented. However, our knowledge of the attentional biases toward body-related information for subjects with physical stature concerns is only at the beginning. And the research on the auditory attentional biases for individuals with physical stature concerns is rare. The identification of attentional biases may provide an impetus for interventions to reduce distress among height dissatisfied individuals. Therefore, the present study investigated the neural mechanis

Muscularity bias internalization moderates the associations of muscularity dissatisfaction with muscularity-oriented disordered eating and psychosocial well-being in men but not women.

Prior research demonstrates positive associations between muscularity dissatisfaction and an array of negative health outcomes, including muscularity-oriented disordered eating, eating-related psychosocial impairment, and psychological distress. However, muscularity dissatisfaction differs by gender and is not always linked to these outcomes, indicating the existence of moderators of these associations. We proposed and examined muscularity bias internalization (MBI) as a moderator of these associations. The study included online samples of 450 Chinese men and 450 Chinese women who completed me

[Body dysmorphic disorder: Symptoms, prevalence, assessment and treatment].

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a relatively common disorder characterized by a preoccupation with nonexistent or slight defects in appearance. BDD usually begins during childhood or adolescence. The preoccupation with the perceived appearance defect typically occurs for many hours a day and is often followed by repetitive behaviours (for example mirror checking and skin picking). The weighted prevalence of BDD in a community sample is around 2%, but it is higher in clinical settings and in cosmetic and dermatological settings. BDD leads to significant distress and/or impairment at work or s

Core psychopathology of treatment-seeking patients with binge-eating disorder: a network analysis investigation.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders may emerge as the result of interactions between observable symptoms. Such interactions can be analyzed using network analysis. Several recent studies have used network analysis to examine eating disorders, indicating a core role of overvaluation of weight and shape. However, no studies to date have applied network models to binge-eating disorder (BED), the most prevalent eating disorder. METHODS: We constructed a cross-sectional graphical LASSO network in a sample of 788 individuals with BED. Symptoms were assessed using the Eating Disorders Examination Interview

The Correlation Between Preoperative Psychological State and Postoperative Satisfaction in Aesthetic Surgery: A Comprehensive Review.

BACKGROUND: The global aesthetic surgery industry is expanding rapidly, with success increasingly defined by patient-reported outcomes. Postoperative satisfaction, a key metric, is strongly influenced by preoperative psychological state. OBJECTIVES: To synthesize evidence on the relationship between preoperative psychological factors (e.g., body image, emotions, personality, expectations) and postoperative satisfaction. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted, including studies on body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), body image dissatisfaction, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, personality, and

A Cross-Sectional Multicenter Study of Multidimensional Body Image in Adolescents and Adults with Gender Dysphoria Before and After Transition-Related Medical Interventions.

Persistent feelings of gender dysphoria (GD) are accompanied by distress and body dissatisfaction in most clinically referred adolescents and adults. Transition-related medical interventions (e.g., puberty suppression, hormones, or surgery) may alleviate body dissatisfaction. The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to compare multidimensional body image across clinically referred adolescents and adults undergoing different transition-related medical interventions. Two clinical samples of adolescents (n = 82) and adults (n = 120) referred to specialized departments of four different tr…

Thinness and muscularity internalization: Associations with disordered eating and muscle dysmorphia in men.

OBJECTIVE: The tripartite influence model of body image identifies internalization of societal body ideals as a risk factor for developing body dissatisfaction, and subsequent disordered eating behavior. In men, internalization of two dimensions of body image ideals, thinness and muscularity, is associated with body dissatisfaction and eating concerns. However, it is unknown how thinness and muscularity internalization interact in predicting muscle dysmorphia and disordered eating in men. METHOD: Data were collected online from 180 undergraduate men, with ages ranging from 18 to 33 years (19.…

Body Satisfaction and Physical Appearance in Gender Dysphoria.

Gender dysphoria (GD) is often accompanied by dissatisfaction with physical appearance and body image problems. The aim of this study was to compare body satisfaction with perceived appearance by others in various GD subgroups. Data collection was part of the European Network for the Investigation of Gender Incongruence. Between 2007 and 2012, 660 adults who fulfilled the criteria of the DSM-IV gender identity disorder diagnosis (1.31:1 male-to-female [MtF]:female-to-male [FtM] ratio) were included into the study. Data were collected before the start of clinical gender-confirming interventions
