Beyond pair entropy: orientational many-body correlations in supercooled glass-forming liquids from a four-point structural entropy.

The conventional pair entropy, derived from the isotropic radial distribution function g(r), systematically underestimates structural ordering in supercooled glass-forming liquids. We argue that this failure arises because S2, constructed from the isotropic g(r), is inherently insensitive to the many-body orientational correlations that become accessible only through a four-point conditional distribution evaluated in a local particle-centered frame. To recover this information, we introduce a three-dimensional four-point structural entropy S3D, constructed from the four-point conditional distr

Symmetry transitions beyond the nanoscale in pressurized silica glass.

Silica is the paradigmatic network glass-former and understanding its response to pressure is essential for comprehending the mechanical properties of silica-based materials and the behavior of silicate melts in the Earth's interior. While pressure (P)-induced changes in the short-range structure-particularly the breakdown of tetrahedral symmetry-have been well documented, structural transformations on larger length scales, important for many material properties, remain poorly understood. Here, we numerically investigate the three-dimensional structure of silica glass as a function of compress

Critical behavior of a programmable time-crystal lattice gas.

Time crystals are many-body systems whose ground state spontaneously breaks time-translation symmetry and thus exhibits long-range spatiotemporal order and robust periodic motion. Using hydrodynamics, we have recently shown how an m-th-order external packing field coupled to density fluctuations in driven diffusive fluids can induce the spontaneous emergence of time-crystalline order in the form of m rotating condensates, which can be further controlled and modulated. Here, we analyze this phenomenon at the microscopic level in a paradigmatic model of particle diffusion under exclusion interac

Accessing Frank-Kasper Phases via Blending of Architecturally Distinct and Sustainable Sugar-Based Block Co-Oligomers.

Sugar-based block co-oligomers (BCOs), composed of polar oligosaccharide and nonpolar hydrocarbon blocks, have emerged as a promising platform for generating complex, thermally stable nanostructures with ultrasmall feature size, including network and Frank-Kasper (FK) phases. Here, we show that the blending of chemically distinct sugar-based BCOs offers an effective alternative to precision synthesis for tuning self-assembly in this class of sustainable materials. We investigate the binary blends of glucose-(solanesol)2 (Glc1-(Sol)2, G1) and 1,3-(maltose)2-(solanesol)2 (1,3-(Glc2)2-(Sol)2, CIS

Changes in hearing function and intracochlear morphology after electrode array insertion in minipigs.

BACKGROUND: In temporal bone specimens from long-term cochlear implant users, foreign body response within the cochlea has been demonstrated. However, how hearing changes after implantation and fibrosis progresses within the cochlea is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the short-term dynamic changes in hearing and cochlear histopathology in minipigs after electrode array insertion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve minipigs were selected for electrode array insertion (EAI) and the Control. Hearing tests were performed preoperatively and on 0, 7, 14, and 28 day(s) postoperatively, and cochlear h

ELASTIC FIBERS DEFINE EMBRYONIC TISSUE STIFFNESS TO ENABLE BUCKLING MORPHOGENESIS OF THE SMALL INTESTINE.

During embryonic development, tissues must possess precise material properties to ensure that cell-generated forces give rise to the stereotyped morphologies of developing organs. However, the question of how material properties are established and regulated during development remains understudied. Here, we aim to address these broader questions through the study of intestinal looping, a process by which the initially straight intestinal tube buckles into loops, permitting ordered packing within the body cavity. Looping results from elongation of the tube against the constraint of an attached

Worldwide Case Reports Using the iTClamp for External Hemorrhage Control.

BACKGROUND: Historically, hemorrhage control strategies consisted of manual pressure, pressure dressings, gauze with or without hemostatic ingredients for wound packing, or the use of tourniquets. The iTClamp is a relatively new alternative to stop external bleeding. METHODS: An anonymous survey was used to evaluate the outcomes of the iTClamp in worldwide cases of external bleeding. RESULTS: A total of 245 evaluable applications were reported. The iTClamp stopped the bleeding in 81% (n = 198) of the cases. Inadequate bleeding control was documented in 8% (n = 20) and in the remaining 11% (n

Cardiorespiratory effects of hypothermia and bicarbonate alkalosis.

The cardiorespiratory effects of reducing body temperature to 30 degrees C (by packing in ice) and subsequent metabolic alkalosis (by infusion of NaHCO3) were studied in six anesthetized, paralyzed, and artificially ventilated (FIO2 = 0.4) dogs. Heart rate decreased from 135 +/- 6 beats/min (mean +/- S.E.) at 37 degrees C to 84 +/- 4 at 30 degrees C; it increased to 96 +/- 4 after 2 h alkalosis. Cardiac output decreased from 1.84 +/- 0.14 to 0.66 +/- 0.08 l/min and then increased to 0.83 +/- 0.07. pHa increased, as expected on cooling, from 7.41 +/- 0.07 to 7.49 +/- 0.03; with bicarbonate it i

The Effect of Prehospital Blood Transfusion on Patient Body Temperature from the Time of Emergency Medical Services Transfusion to Arrival at the Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Transfusion of blood products is life-saving and time-sensitive in the setting of acute blood-loss anemia, and is increasingly common in the emergency medical services (EMS) setting. Prehospital blood products are generally "cold-stored" at 4°C, then warmed with a portable fluid-warming system for the purpose of preventing the "lethal triad" of hypothermia, acidosis, and coagulopathy. This study aims to evaluate body temperature changes of EMS patients receiving packed red blood cells (PRBC) and/or fresh frozen plasma (FFP) when using the LifeWarmer Quantum Blood & Fluid Warming Sy

Lead exposure affects health indices in free-ranging ducks in Argentina.

Numerous experiments under controlled conditions and extensive investigation of waterfowl die-offs have demonstrated that exposure to lead from spent gunshot is highly detrimental to the health of waterfowl. However, few studies have focused on examining the more subtle sub-lethal effects of lead toxicity on ducks in non-experimental settings. In our study, the health of ducks exposed to varying amounts of lead under natural conditions was assessed by correlating individual lead exposure with relevant indices of health. Based on hunter-killed wild ducks in Argentina, we measured spleen mass, b

[Reisolation and redescription of pelobiont Pelomyxa paradoxa Penard, 1902 (Archamoebae, Pelobiontida)].

Morphology of a pelobiont Pelomyxa paradoxa Penard, 1902 was investigated at light- and electron-microscopical levels. Locomoting cells are cigar-shaped. The cells produce many hyaline pseudopodia of digital and conical form at lateral sides of the body. The organism has a pronounced hyaline bulbous uroid with broad peripheral zone of hyaloplasm and many conical hyaline villi. There is a thin layer of amorphous glycocalix at the cell surface. "Structure" and food vacuoles of different size are very abundant in the endoplasm. Two different species of prokaryote endocytobionts are peculiar for P

Brain organochlorines and Lewy pathology: the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study.

Although organochlorines have been reported more frequently in Parkinson's disease (PD) brains than in controls, the association with brain Lewy pathology is unknown. Honolulu-Asia Aging Study (HAAS) participants, exposed to organochlorines from a variety of sources during midlife, represent a population well suited to determining the relationship of brain organochlorines with Lewy pathology in decedents from the longitudinal HAAS. The study design included the measurement of 21 organochlorine levels in frozen occipital lobe samples from HAAS decedents. Alpha-synuclein immunostaining performed

Heterogeneity in lysosomal dynamics and metabolic functions along the kidney proximal tubule.

The kidney proximal tubule is a highly specialized epithelium that transports metabolites and maintains body homeostasis. Cells lining this nephron segment are densely packed with lysosomes, but little is known about the dynamic activity of these organelles in situ. Here, using targeted sensors and live cell and intravital imaging we track acidified lysosomes along the mouse proximal tubule and uncover marked axial heterogeneity in their distribution, characteristics and organellar interactions. In the early part, cathepsin-rich lysosomes frequently contact with apical endosomes to receive and

[The value of embolization in severe epistaxis. Indications and methods (author's transl)].

When performed by a team who are experienced in the use of embolization of the external carotid region, this procedure is nowadays a safe and extremely effective method for treating severe, massive, uncontrolled, recurrent epistaxis. Arteriography shows the site of bleeding, the nature of the lesion, and the arteries affected. When carried out by the femoral or common carotid route, this method was effective in 52 cases of severe epistaxis of various origins: essential epistaxis, or from hypertension, trauma, Rendu Osler's disease, vascular malformations, carotidocavernous fistulae, benign or
