Impairments in mentalizing, the capacity to understand the self and others in terms of intentional mental states, are proposed to play an important role in the emergence of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adolescence. Although mentalizing problems in adults with BPD have been amply demonstrated, research in adolescence lags behind in terms of both the normative development of mentalizing in adolescence and the relation between different dimensions of mentalizing and adolescent BPD. Therefore, the current study investigated developmental trends and sex-related differences related to di…

Since borderline personality disorder was identified as a distinct psychiatric syndrome in the 1970s, it has been recognized as a disorder marked by disturbance in interpersonal functioning. Understanding the borderline patient's characteristic modes of relating to self and others is therefore of significant theoretical and clinical importance. This article seeks to examine multiple facets of borderline personality disorder believed to contribute to interpersonal dysfunction, including: common communication patterns observed in borderline patients, such as double-bind communication; the primit…

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by instability in self-image, emotions, and relationships. Features such as (auto)aggression, devaluation, and impulsivity indicate proximity to narcissistic traits, especially antagonistic aspects. While its links to grandiose and vulnerable narcissism are established, the role of antagonistic narcissism (AN) remains unclear. This study investigates AN in BPD by comparing female BPD patients with a diagnostically heterogeneous clinical control group without personality disorders and by examining its associations with symptom se…

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), certain criteria are used for the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Although there is evidence that several risk factors could predispose individuals to BPD, it is still not clear what the etiologic pathways of this personality disorder are. The aim of this systematic review has been to identify, classify, analyze and interpret data regarding risk and protective factors for BPD to inform policies and practices in terms of public health. In total, 15 studies were included in this sys…

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) may include rigid thoughts, interpersonal difficulties, unstable identity, and the presentation of intense and volatile emotions; the leading indicator for this condition is symptom severity (SS). Within this spectrum, there could be subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) that may worsen the severity of the clinical condition. The present study aimed to compare SCC scores between BPD participants and a group of control subjects (CS) and to determine the association between BPD symptom severity and SCC in participants with BPD.
METHODS: 102 part…

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a core feature of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), yet its prevalence and variations across demographics and diagnoses in clinical populations are underexplored. This study aims to investigate the frequency and distribution of impulsive behaviors related to BPD among a large clinical sample, considering gender, age, and diagnostic categories.
METHODS: A total of 2862 participants were consecutively sampled from psychiatric and psycho-counseling clinics. BPD traits and symptoms were assessed using the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire 4th Edition Plus (PDQ-4…

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by a long-term pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, unstable self-image, marked impulsivity, and/or affective instability. In addition, these features can be evidenced by efforts to avoid real or feared abandonment, chronic feelings of emptiness, mood reactivity, recurrent self-injurious or suicidal behavior, other impulsive behaviors with potential for self-damaging effects, intense anger or difficulty with anger control, and transient paranoid ideation or stress-related dissociative symptoms. BPD is associated with subs…

Generally speaking, BPD is a cognitive-affective disposition that shapes one's conception and experience of herself, and also her experiences of interrelationality. Many BPD symptoms relating to affect regulation are spurred by psychosocial complications that can then exacerbate psychosocial complications in future relationships. One consequence of affective dysregulation due to abuse-induced trauma can be persistent interpersonal breakdowns. Such breakdowns can be caused by the inability of two differently affectively disposed persons to harmonize according to what person each needs based on

Background: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by symptoms associated with difficulties in emotion regulation, altered self-image, impulsivity, and instability in personal relationships. A relationship has been found between BPD symptoms and altered neuropsychological processes. Studies of event-related potentials (ERP) measured with electroencephalogram (EEG) have found neural correlates related to BPD symptoms. Of note is the P300 component, considered a potential mental health biomarker for trauma-associated disorders. However, no meta-analysis has been found to demonstr…

BACKGROUND: Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) present difficulties in self-regulation and interaction, which is a challenge for psychotherapists that is also addressed in BPD-specific interventions. Against this background, outpatient psychotherapists were surveyed about the factors playing a decisive role in their treatment offer for patients with BPD.
METHODS: Psychotherapists for adults were contacted via their email address published on the website of the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung (Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians), 231 of whom answered an online qu…

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex psychopathology associated with high service utilization rates. In turn, the hospitalization of BPD patients is a controversial challenge for mental health professionals. Prior literature has identified certain socio-demographic factors as linked to an increased risk of BPD. In this study, we examined the possible connection between these socio-demographic factors and hospitalization duration. We analyzed 1077 hospitalization records of 200 BPD-diagnosed patients. Patients' gender, age, education level, employment and marital statuses, and liv…

This article focuses on the narratives that circulate about borderline personality disorder (BPD) in health-care settings in Australia and the effects such narratives can have on how people practice and seek out care. People with a BPD diagnosis frequently access health-care services, often encountering stigma and discrimination. Drawing on narrative theory, we critically unpack the circulation and capacities of BPD narratives and the ways they can often contribute to poor and troubling experiences. This article is based on qualitative interviews with people living with a BPD diagnosis, as wel…

Objective: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and eating disorders (EDs) both cause significant distress and co-occur at rates higher than expected, signifying potential overlapping regulatory mechanisms between both disorders. More specifically, both disorders involve emotion regulation deficits, suggesting they may share specific maladaptive regulatory components. The present study sought to examine the predictive role of emotion dysregulation within the comorbidity between EDs and BPD. Methods: A sample of psychiatric outpatients (N = 872) collected from a longitudinal study spanning the…

Borderline personality disorder and eating disorders frequently co-occur among youths. These disorders emerge in adolescence, during the critical developmental period of building an independent sense of self and the capacity to relate to one's community. Because of core differences in the development and psychopathology of borderline personality disorder and eating disorders, adjustments are required when treating these disorders when they co-occur. Few established treatment approaches can address these disorders simultaneously. Evidence-based psychotherapies for borderline personality disorde…

This study describes the 6-year course of grit scores among patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) who have and have not experienced a symptomatic and psychosocial recovery. This study also explores predictors of grittiness in BPD patients. These patients (N = 224) were assessed as part of the McLean Study of Adult Development (MSAD). Levels of grit were assessed using the Grit Scale, a self-report measure assessing overall grittiness and three sub-scales of grit: consistency of interest, perseverance, and ambition. Recovered patients reported significantly higher levels of grit o…

Perinatal borderline personality disorder (BPD) and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) are associated with significant impairment to interpersonal functioning, and risk of intergenerational transmission of psychopathology. Evaluation of interventions, however, is scarce. To date, no systematic review has addressed interventions for perinatal BPD, cPTSD, and associated symptomatology. Given the modest evidence to support informed clinical guidelines, the objective of this systematic review is to synthesise the literature on interventions for perinatal BPD and cPTSD, and to generate …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Unstable relationships are a core feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Impairments in trust processes (i.e., appraisal and learning regarding others' trustworthiness) can subserve interpersonal problems associated with BPD, but the determinants, mechanisms, consequences, and variations in trust impairments among individuals with BPD remain poorly characterized. Thus, a better understanding of such impairments could help target interventions that address the interpersonal problems of individuals with BPD beyond emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, and aggression.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental health condition marked by impairments in self and interpersonal functioning. Stigma from health staff may often result in a reluctance to diagnose, impacting recovery trajectories. Qualitative interviews were conducted with participants (N = 15; M Age = 36.4 years, SD = 7.5; 93.3% female) with lived experience of BPD exploring topics of illness onset, insight, experience of diagnosis and treatment. Qualitative responses were analysed within a co-design framework with a member of the research team who identifies as having a lived experie…

Loneliness, influenced by genetic and environmental factors such as childhood maltreatment, is one aspect of interpersonal dysfunction in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Numerous studies link loneliness and BPD and twin studies indicate a genetic contribution to this association. The aim of our study was to investigate whether genetic predisposition for loneliness and BPD risk overlap and whether genetic risk for loneliness contributes to higher loneliness reported by BPD patients, using genome-wide genotype data. We assessed the genetic correlation of genome-wide association studies (G…

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a highly prevalent psychiatric disorder and presents a complex therapeutic challenge due to limited treatment modalities. Recent focus has converged on the endocannabinoid system (ECS) as a prospective modulator of psychopathological processes in BPD. To address this hypothesis, we analysed plasma endocannabinoid concentrations, specifically anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), in a cohort of 49 female BPD patients and 32 matched healthy controls (HC). Additionally, we examined the effect of the FAAH polymorphism rs324420 and correlates w…
