Computed tomographic brain scanning in intraparenchymal pyogenic abscesses.

Retrospective analysis of 25 pyogenic brain abcesses diagnosed by computed tomography (CT) revealed relatively specific morphologic characteristics of these infections. The ability to obtain an early accurate diagnosis resulted in a dramatic decrease in patient morbidity and mortality. Repeated examinations by CT permitted close monitoring of the response of the abscess to antibiotic therapy. In some instances the need for surgical intervention was eliminated or the surgical approach was modified as a result of these studies.

[Clinical picture of single and multiple rhinogenic brain abscesses].

The authors examined 11 patients with rhinogenous abscesses of the brain aged from 2 to 45, 5 of them with multiple abscesses. According to their data the infection penetrated into the cranial cavity by two principal ways, namely, contactual (in 2 patients) and hematogenous via venous passages (in 4 patients). Contactual cerebral abscesses of rhinogenous genesis more frequently appear during frontitis, have a lingering chronic course and localize at the pole of the frontal lobe. Clinically they manifest themselves by focal and total cerebral symptoms including craniographic changes of hyperten

[Experiences with oto-rhinogenous brain abscesses (author's transl)].

The results and conclusions of 43 surgical interventions performed on account of oto-rhinogenous brain abscess are reported. In these patients the infection of brain substance occurred in two ways: 1 by contact propagation and 2. per venous reflux, associated with thrombosinusitis. In the 1. the brain abscess was accompanied by purulent meningitis and the majority of the patients died during the postoperative period. In the 2, the patients operated on account of cerebral abscess developed per venous reflux, improved and became health. In order to get more exact localisation of the abscess ther

Brain abscess secondary to Streptococcus constellatus in a healthy child.

Brain abscess in pediatric patients carries significant morbidity and mortality risk, requiring prompt diagnosis and multidisciplinary management approach. We report the case of a previously healthy 15-year-old male presenting with complaints of fever, headache, and somnolence. Magnetic resonance imaging identified a brain abscess, leading to empiric treatment with ceftriaxone, vancomycin, and metronidazole, followed by urgent surgical drainage. Abscess culture yielded Streptococcus constellatus, and treatment was narrowed to ceftriaxone. This case emphasises the importance of early recognitio

Clinical Picture and Outcomes in Patients Diagnosed with Brain Abscess.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify factors that affect the clinical course, outcome, and duration of hospital stay in patients with a brain abscess. Methods: Eighty-four inpatients with a confirmed brain abscess were the subjects of this retrospective study. The impact of several factors on the length of hospital stay was evaluated and multiple linear regression analysis was used. Results: Several factors affecting the length of hospitalization were identified. These were older age and larger abscess diameter. Conclusions: Proper handling of preexisting infections and early cons

Brain Abscesses in Domestic Ruminants: Clinicopathological and Bacteriological Approaches.

Brain abscesses in ruminants often arise from primary infection foci, leading to an unfavorable prognosis for affected animals. This highlights the need for comprehensive studies on brain abscesses across different ruminant species. We retrospectively investigated medical records of epidemiological, clinical, neuroimaging, anatomopathological, and bacteriological findings in six ruminants (three goats, two cows, and one sheep) diagnosed with brain abscesses. All animals studied were female. Apathy (50%), compulsive walking (33%), decreased facial sensitivity (33%), head pressing (33%), seizure

A Rare Confluence: Brain Abscess in an Adult With Tetralogy of Fallot.

Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a common congenital heart disease (CHD) characterized by four distinct cardiac abnormalities. Brain abscess, though rare, is a life-threatening complication in patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD), including TOF. This case report describes a 24-year-old female with unrepaired TOF who presented with symptoms of a brain abscess, including altered sensorium, fever, projectile vomiting, and headache. Diagnostic imaging with non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography (NCCT) revealed a well-defined hypodense lesion with a midline shift, prompting urgent

A diagnostically challenging case of brain abscess with associated hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Brain abscesses with associated hemorrhage are rare. Herein, we present a case of brain abscess with associated hemorrhage that posed a diagnostic challenge. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 50-year-old male presented with the left homonymous hemianopia and was admitted to our hospital due to a subcortical hemorrhage in the right occipital lobe, which was revealed during a head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Subsequent imaging suggested an intra-tumoral hemorrhage, so surgical treatment was planned. However, on hospital day 6, the patient suddenly showed a decrease in consciousness level. H

Rare but There: Ceftriaxone-Induced Neutropenia in a Patient With a Brain Abscess.

This case report details the case of a 70-year-old man with Marfan syndrome and hypertension who developed neutropenia after an eight-week course of ceftriaxone, used to treat a brain abscess. Initially presenting with tonic-clonic seizures and headaches, his condition was managed with ceftriaxone and metronidazole. The subsequent drop in neutrophil counts from 7.54 × 10^9/L to 0.87 × 10^9/L leads to the discontinuation of ceftriaxone and the administration of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF), which effectively restored the neutrophil levels. This case highlights that clinicians s

Aggregatibacter aphrophilus and Eikenella corrodens: a case of brain abscess.

We report a case of a 26-year-old female who developed a brain abscess that was strongly suspected to be caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis, A. aphrophilus, and E. corrodens species. In general, A. aphrophilus and E. corrodens, members of the HACEK group (Haemophilus spp., Aggregatibacter spp., C. hominis, E. corrodens, and K. kingae), have been associated with the development of endocarditis, meningitis, sinusitis, otitis media, pneumonia, osteomyelitis, peritonitis, and wound infections. Cerebral abscesses are a rare manifestation of these bacteria; only a few cases are described in the li

Nocardia brain abscess in a patient with diabetes: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Nocardia are aerobic Gram-positive bacilli that can invade multiple organ systems, including the brain and lungs. It is most frequently found in patients who are immunocompromised. Invasive nocardial disease is a potentially life-threatening infection that can pose a diagnostic challenge. CASE PRESENTATION: Our case details a 76-year-old Indian woman with poorly-controlled diabetes mellitus admitted for confusion and falls. Imaging revealed intracranial abscesses and necrotic masses in the mediastinum and lungs. The suspected diagnosis was tuberculosis; however, she underwent exte

A Case of Histoplasma duboisii Brain Abscess and Review of the Literature.

Histoplasmosis is a fungal disease caused by Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum (Hcc) and H. capsulatum var. duboisii (Hcd). Central nervous system (CNS) involvement is rare. So far, the few cases reported having Histoplasmosis associated brain abscesses were caused by H. capsulatum var. capsulatum. Herein, we report a unique case of brain abscess caused by H. capsulatum var. duboisii occurring in a 42-year-old immunocompromised woman with HIV. Initially, she presented with hypothermia, vomiting, frontal headache, evolving over one month. She then progressed to have a generalized seizure.

Brain abscess: A rare complication in a child with tetralogy of Fallot.

Brain abscess is a rarely occurring fatal complication accounting for 5%-18.7% of the population with cyanotic congenital heart diseases. Cyanotic heart diseases are associated with a right-to-left shunt that bypasses pulmonary circulation and results in tissue hypoxia and cyanosis. The most common cyanotic congenital anomaly seen is the tetralogy of Fallot. Herein, we discuss a case of uncorrected tetralogy of Fallot presenting as a parieto-occipital abscess in a 13-year-old boy. The patient was managed conservatively on intravenous antibiotics due to the small size of the abscess and then re
