Most women initially consult their gynecologist when they have concerns about breast disorders. Although breast cancer is usually the patient's biggest fear, it is benign breast disease, a common disorder, which often complicates a thorough evaluation and which interferes with the early diagnosis of breast cancer. This article summarizes the current state of knowledge on the cause, diagnosis, and prognosis of selected benign breast disorders. Recent progress includes a promising line of research on the content of cyst fluids, better definition of breast cancer risk, and increasing acceptance o

Goserelin depot (Zoladex) was administered for 6 months to seven women with premenopausal gross cystic breast disease. For each patient at least three cysts were followed up by ultrasonography and radiography (21 cysts in total). Hormone assessments showed a suppression of serum oestradiol at 8-12 weeks. Two-thirds of the observed cysts continued to grow after 8-12 weeks, but two-thirds had decreased in size by 20-24 weeks and this decrease had continued 12 weeks after cessation of treatment. Cysts containing fluid with a higher Na+/K+ ratio (extracellular fluid type) responded earlier to trea

BACKGROUND An epithelial inclusion cyst within a lymph node denotes a heterotopic phenomenon. Nodal epithelial inclusion cysts have been reported in a variety of anatomical locations including pelvic, abdominal, mediastinal, and axillary regions. While nodal melanocytic nevus (also known as nevus cell aggregates) is the most common heterotopic phenomena involving the axillary lymph nodes, the presence of benign epithelial inclusion cysts in axillary lymph nodes is a rare but well-reported finding. Such documentation is in part due to assessment of sentinel lymph nodes in breast cancer becoming

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathologic features, immunophenotype and differential diagnosis of cystic hypersecretory lesion (CHL) of the breast.
METHODS: Clinicopathologic and follow-up data of six cases of breast CHL in 2010-2013 were collected and reviewed.Immunohistochemical and mucinous staining was performed.
RESULTS: All six patients were female, age ranged from 37 to 71 years (average 49.3 years). Three cases were cystic hypersecretory hyperplasia (CHH), the other three cases were cystic hypersecretory carcinoma (CHC). Clinically the lesions presented as either breast mass or mammo

Gastrointestinal duplications can occur anywhere from the mouth to the anal cavity. The occurrence of a duplication cyst in the tongue of a neonate is very rare. These cysts occur due to endodermal cells that are trapped during development. Congenital lingual cystic masses are challenging entities. They usually present in the neonatal period and surgical excision is curative. We report a 10-day-old, 3-kg neonate with a gastric duplication cyst in the oral cavity with inability to close his mouth or breast feed for whom we performed subtotal excision of the cyst.

Breast cancer is a leading cause of death among women worldwide, making early detection and diagnosis critical for effective treatment and improved patient outcomes. Ultrasound imaging is a common diagnostic tool for breast cancer, but interpreting ultrasound images can be challenging due to the complexity of breast tissue and the variability of image quality. This study proposed an Attention Gated Multi ResU-Net model for medical image segmentation tasks, that has shown promising results for breast cancer ultrasound image segmentation. The model's multi-scale feature extraction and attention-

One hundred and five patients with discrete breast lumps were examined with a 10 MHz Doppler ultrasonic flowmeter. Doppler flow signals were analysed on an Angioscan spectrum analyser. Recordings from the opposite normal breast were taken as controls and signals from the two sides compared. In 23 patients signals from the normal breast could not be recorded and therefore results of the remaining 82 patients are reported. These included 39 patients with carcinoma, 20 with fibroadenoma, 12 with cyclical nodularity and 11 with cysts. Malignant lumps exhibited significantly higher peak systolic (S

CEA as well as alkaline and acid phosphatase were measured in patients with fibrocystic breast disease. The values recorded from the punctured fluids were compared to those in peripheral blood. CEA concentrations in cyst fluid were elevated in patients with proliferative breast disease, whereas no correlations could be established between alkaline and acid phosphatase, on the one hand, and various histological forms of breast disease, on the other.

Wide variations in the concentrations of IgA, IgG, lactoferrin, lysozyme and albumin were found in 96 cyst fluids obtained from 75 patients with gross cystic disease of the breast. Sedimentation coefficient determination were performed on 19 of the cyst fluids with the highest IgA concentrations in an attempt to discover the basis for the wide variation and two types of cyst fluids were found: cyst fluids that resembled external secretions such as colostrum of milk with the IgA wholly or predominantly in the 11S (secretory) form, and low concentrations of IgG and albumin, and cyst fluids that

Squamous cell carcinoma of the breast is thought to arise through metaplasia of ductal carcinoma cells. We report a case of pure squamous cell carcinoma of the breast with features of intracystic tumor, which was considered to have arisen from metaplastic squamous epithelial cells lining the cyst wall. A 71-year-old woman presented at our hospital with a 40 x 30-mm mass in the lower outer quadrant of the right breast. Mammography revealed a round, high-density mass, which had a mostly regular but partially irregular margin. Ultrasonography demonstrated a solid tumor with an irregular shape pro

BACKGROUND: The possible problems of an adolescent breast include a large spectrum of phenomena such as changes which may cause aesthetic problems, infectious diseases and in rare cases, malignant tumors. Young adolescents and their mothers tend to consult with a gynecologist usually due to developmental abnormalities of the growing breast such as asymmetry of the breast, agenesis or hypoplasia of one breast. Cysts and tumors are usually worrisome and warrant attention and precise diagnosis.
PURPOSE: The aim of this paper is to review the recent studies and data concerning breast diseases in

BACKGROUND: Adnexal masses detected in breast cancer survivors are of particular concern because of the increased risk of ovarian malignancy.
AIMS: This study was performed to analyse adnexal masses among women with breast cancer with regard to variables predictive of malignancy.
METHODS: The study included women with breast cancer who had undergone surgery for an adnexal mass between 2002 and 2010 at Hacettepe University Hospital. A total of 45 consecutive women with a mean age of 47.3 years (range 25-76) were analysed retrospectively.
RESULTS: Of 45 cases reviewed, benign ovarian patholog

Prostate-specific antigen, a 33 kDa serine protease, is found at high concentrations in seminal plasma and prostate epithelial cells. It is currently used for the diagnosis and monitoring of prostate carcinoma. However, several investigators have demonstrated nonprostatic sources of prostate specific antigen, including amniotic fluid, breast milk, breast cyst fluid, nipple aspirate fluid, and breast tumor cytosol. Studies have revealed that a high prostate-specific antigen level in tumors of women with breast cancer is associated with good prognosis. This finding is analyzed in this manuscript…

A retrospective survey of cystic tumours of the breast seen at the North Middlesex and St Bartholomew's Hospitals, London, has been undertaken to determine their incidence and clinical features. During the years 1967-76 4530 histological examinations were carried out on breast tissue and 1277 breast cancers diagnosed. Intracystic papillary tumours, both benign and malignant, were the least uncommon of cyst tumours, but the malignant type accounted for 0.55% of all the breast cancers. Aspects suggesting the possible presence of an intracystic tumour are discussed.

The majority of male breast diseases are benign. The most common is gynaecomastia. Although it is rare, the most critical diagnosis is a malignancy. Radiologists are generally less familiar with breast disease in males compared with females. This pictorial review will highlight the ultrasonographic, mammographic and pathological features of a spectrum of benign and malignant male breast diseases. This includes gynaecomastia, fat necrosis, lipoma, epidermoid cyst, subareolar abscess, chronic inflammation, melanoma and ductal carcinoma.

Sonography has become an important tool for evaluating breast abnormalities, including inflammatory processes, hematomas, ductal ectasia, cysts and solid lesions. This article describes protocols for ultrasound imaging of the breast and the sonographic appearance of common breast conditions, with particular attention to differentiating benign from malignant lesions. Ultrasound's role in interventional breast procedures and radiation therapy planning also are discussed.

Pseudocyst is an unusual complication occurring after rectus flap breast reconstruction. Of four patients in whom a preoperative diagnosis of pseudocyst was made, three had epigastric masses and a fourth presented with a mass of the chest wall. The three patients with epigastric masses were identified by physical examination and evaluated by aspiration of cyst contents. Imaging with computed tomography delineated cyst anatomy and assisted in confirmation of the diagnosis. Most likely, the pathogenesis of these lesions is related to undrained or clinically undetected serous collections which ul

Ultrasound of the breast has a role both as the primary and as an ancillary modality in the work-up of breast abnormalities. Its main role is to differentiate cystic from solid abnormalities and to thereby guide further work-up and intervention. Only the diagnosis of a simple cyst will obviate the need for further evaluation or therapy. Doppler ultrasonography of breast lesions may give further information in the future, although this is currently not employed in clinical practice. Various types of ultrasound examinations may yield useful information in the patient with breast cancer or in wom
