Pathogenic Leptospira are widespread in the urban wildlife of southern California.

Leptospirosis, the most widespread zoonotic disease in the world, is broadly understudied in multi-host wildlife systems. Knowledge gaps regarding Leptospira circulation in wildlife, particularly in densely populated areas, contribute to frequent misdiagnoses in humans and domestic animals. We assessed Leptospira prevalence levels and risk factors in five target wildlife species across the greater Los Angeles region: striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis), raccoons (Procyon lotor), coyotes (Canis latrans), Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana), and fox squirrels (Sciurus niger). We sampled more

Parental Age and Childhood Risk for Cerebral Palsy in California.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations between maternal or paternal age at the time of delivery and offspring's risk for cerebral palsy (CP) in California. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a population-based, case-control study that included 8736 singleton CP cases and 90 250 singleton controls, matched by sex and birth year, selected from California birth certificate records from 1994 to 2010. We estimated OR and 95% CIs for CP diagnosis according to maternal and paternal age recorded on the birth certificates. Causal mediation analysis was performed to estimate direct and indirect effects of

Meteorological driving forces of reference evapotranspiration and their trends in California.

Reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is a variable that helps determine atmospheric pressure on living (reference) grass to release water into the atmosphere. For this purpose, four main driving forces: air temperature, air humidity, solar radiation, and wind speed need to be measured over the well-watered reference grass. The relative influence of these driving forces is region and climate-specific, with daily and seasonal variations. A clear understanding of the dynamic interactions of ETo's driving factors can illuminate the water and energy cycles of the earth and assist modelers with more a

Postmortem diagnoses of spinal ataxia in 316 horses in California.

OBJECTIVE: To determine period prevalences of postmortem diagnoses for spinal cord or vertebral column lesions as underlying causes of ataxia (spinal ataxia) in horses. ANIMALS: 2,861 client-owned horses (316 with ataxia [ataxic group] and 2,545 without ataxia [control group]). PROCEDURES: The medical records database of the University of California-Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital was searched to identify horses necropsied between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2017. Results were compared between the ataxic and control groups and between various groups of horses in the ataxic g

The Availability of Sharps Disposal Bins: A Survey of Airports in California.

BACKGROUND: Sharps waste, especially medical sharps waste, can put those who come into contact with it at risk for injury and exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Options for self-injectors to dispose of their sharps while traveling vary greatly - from sharps containers in limited locations in some public restrooms to large kiosks centrally located to no containers at all. Currently, there is a lack of published data on sharps disposal bins in commercial airports. We surveyed commercial airports in California to assess the current state of sharps waste disposal. Many people with diabetes routine

Drinking water contaminants in California and hypertensive disorders in pregnancy.

UNLABELLED: Environmental pollutants have been associated with hypertensive disorders in pregnancy including gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and eclampsia, though few have focused on drinking water contamination. Water pollution can be an important source of exposures that may contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: We linked water quality data on 13 contaminants and two violations from the California Communities Environmental Health Screening Tool to birth records from vital statistics and hospital discharge records (2007-2012) to examine the relationship between drinking

Setting a minimum age for juvenile justice jurisdiction in California.

Purpose Despite the existence of minimum age laws for juvenile justice jurisdiction in 18 US states, California has no explicit law that protects children (i.e. youth less than 12 years old) from being processed in the juvenile justice system. In the absence of a minimum age law, California lags behind other states and international practice and standards. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach In this policy brief, academics across the University of California campuses examine current evidence, theory, and policy related to the minimum age of juvenile justice juri

A Pediatric Profile of a Homeless Patient in San Jose, California.

The causes of homelessness are complex and poorly understood. This paper describes the homeless population in Santa Clara County, California in terms of Adverse Childhood Events, Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs), and family breakdown. Respondents reported severely traumatic childhoods; 78.7% grew up in a household with a person with drug or alcohol dependence and 64.6% endured psychological abuse as a child. Seventy-six percent of subjects recalled at least one TBI, 58.4% with loss of consciousness. Nineteen percent were in foster care as children and 40.2% reported having someone other than a

Multiple introductions of the dengue vector, Aedes aegypti, into California.

The yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti inhabits much of the tropical and subtropical world and is a primary vector of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses. Breeding populations of A. aegypti were first reported in California (CA) in 2013. Initial genetic analyses using 12 microsatellites on collections from Northern CA in 2013 indicated the South Central US region as the likely source of the introduction. We expanded genetic analyses of CA A. aegypti by: (a) examining additional Northern CA samples and including samples from Southern CA, (b) including more southern US populations for compari

Mitigation of Marijuana-Related Legal Harms to Youth in California.

If recreational marijuana is legalized for adults in California, a rational implementation of public policy would neither criminalize youth possession, nor medically pathologize it by conflating possession with addiction. The harms of a criminal justice approach to juveniles should not exceed the harms of the drug itself. Juvenile arrests and probation have consequences: (1) arrest records, probation, and juvenile hall; (2) an incarceration subculture, "crime school," psychological and re-entry costs; (3) school "zero-tolerance" expulsions and suspensions; (4) ineligibility for federal school

The Eco-epidemiology of Pacific Coast Tick Fever in California.

Rickettsia philipii (type strain "Rickettsia 364D"), the etiologic agent of Pacific Coast tick fever (PCTF), is transmitted to people by the Pacific Coast tick, Dermacentor occidentalis. Following the first confirmed human case of PCTF in 2008, 13 additional human cases have been reported in California, more than half of which were pediatric cases. The most common features of PCTF are the presence of at least one necrotic lesion known as an eschar (100%), fever (85%), and headache (79%); four case-patients required hospitalization and four had multiple eschars. Findings presented here implicat

Trends in maternal morbidity before and during pregnancy in California.

OBJECTIVES: We examined trends in maternal comorbidities in California. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 1,551,017 California births using state-linked vital statistics and hospital discharge cohort data for 1999, 2002, and 2005. We used International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes to identify the following conditions, some of which were preexisting: maternal hypertension, diabetes, asthma, thyroid disorders, obesity, mental health conditions, substance abuse, and tobacco use. We estimated prevalence rates with hierarchical logisti

Tribal casinos in California: the last vestige of indoor smoking.

BACKGROUND: High levels of airborne particles from secondhand smoke have been reported in California Indian casinos. Yet, little is known regarding the smoking status of casino patrons, their avoidance of secondhand smoke while visiting, and their views on a hypothetical smoking ban. METHODS: Predictors of visiting an Indian casino were assessed among participants of the 2008 California Tobacco Survey (n = 10,397). Exposure to and avoidance of secondhand smoke were subsequently analyzed among a subset of participants who had visited a casino in the year prior to the survey (n = 3,361). RESUL

Increased use of intrauterine contraception in California, 1997 to 2007.

BACKGROUND: Modern intrauterine contraception (IUC) is safe and highly effective, but is used by fewer than 4% of women in the United States. Once recommended only for women with at least one child, it is now recommended for most women regardless of parity or age. METHODS: This study used data representative of California women from 10 years of the California Women's Health Survey (1997-2007) to describe how IUC users differ from women using other contraceptives, and assess changes in IUC users' characteristics over time. FINDINGS: Overall 4.9% of women in California used IUC. Multivariable

Survey of dairy housing and manure management practices in California.

In 2007, a descriptive survey was mailed to all dairies in Glenn (G) and Tulare (T) Counties to identify current and future opportunities of manure management practices on California dairies. The purpose was to provide baseline information for development of outreach curriculum and a decision support tool to quantify potential benefits of various N management options on dairy farms. Such baseline information is valuable to staff regulating dairy facilities (e.g., San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District and Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board), dairy trade asso

What's Behind the Increasing Rates of Coccidioidomycosis in Arizona and California?

The number of cases of symptomatic coccidioidomycosis reported in the endemic regions of California and Arizona has increased over the past two decades. In California, the southern San Joaquin Valley has seen a dramatic increase, with rates of symptomatic illness of more than 150 per 100,000 of population in Kern County. In Arizona, almost 5,000 cases are now reported yearly. In contrast to California, the coccidioidal endemic region in Arizona is also the most populous region of the state, and Arizona now accounts for 60% of all cases reported in the United States. Reasons for these increases

The impact of race on organ donation rates in Southern California.

BACKGROUND: The Organ Donation Breakthrough Collaborative began in 2003 to address and alleviate the shortage of organs available for transplantation. This study investigated the patterns of organ donation by race to determine if the Collaborative had an impact on donation rates among ethnic minorities. STUDY DESIGN: The following data from the Southern California regional organ procurement organization were reviewed between 2004 and 2008: age, race (Caucasian, African-American, Asian, Hispanic, and other), the numbers of eligible referrals for organ donation and actual donors, types of donor

Study of laryngopharyngeal pathology in Thoroughbred horses in southern California.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: There is increasing anecdotal evidence among horse owners, trainers and equine clinicians of a high prevalence of subepiglottic ulcers, suggested to have a negative effect on racing performance. OBJECTIVES: To provide a prevalence study and pathological characterisation of laryngopharyngeal lesions with emphasis in the subepiglottic area and, in particular, subepiglottic ulcers. METHODS: The study was carried out on 91 Thoroughbred racehorses received for post mortem examination from 4 major Southern California racetracks. The most common reason for submission w
