Radiological Landmarks as an Aid in the Interpretation of Rodent Skull Extra-Oral Projections.

Knowledge of the radiographic anatomy of rodent skulls is essential for accurately interpreting extra-oral radiographs, a non-invasive diagnostic tool commonly used in veterinary practice. Due to the complexity of the skull and the potential for distortion in two-dimensional views, a systematic evaluation of anatomical structures is necessary. This study identifies the most clinically relevant anatomical landmarks on standard extra-oral radiographic views of the skull and mandible in various rodent species, including a cane rat, two woodchucks, and seven common mole rats. Specimens were evalua

Heterotopic Ossification After COVID-19: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

We report a 31-year-old woman hospitalized for approximately two months for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Under sedation, she received physiotherapy to prevent joint contractures. When weaning from the mechanical ventilator began, she complained of pain and limited range of motion in her bilateral hip and knee joints. Radiography and computed tomography revealed non-traumatic heterotopic ossification (HO) in the bilateral vastus medialis and hips. Range-of-motion exercises were discontinued, and treatment with indomethacin and etidronate disodium was started. Alkaline phosphat

[A Case of Radiation-Induced Lumbosacral Plexopathy after CRT for Rectal Cancer].

A 71-year-old man received preoperative chemoradiotherapy(CRT)for advanced rectal cancer. From just after CRT, a burning sensation appeared on the skin of the outer thighs and buttock. Laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection was performed after CRT. About 2 months after the surgery, weakness of the lower limbs appeared, but the patient was able to walk. About 4 months after the surgery, the patient became unable to walk. MRI examination was performed, but no abnormalities were found. Peripheral nerve electrical examination revealed severe axonopathy. Radiation-induced lumbosacral plexopathy(RI

Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders (NMOSDs) Diagnosed After Surgery for the Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament of the Cervical and Thoracic Spine: A Case Report.

Complications of compressive spinal cord myelopathy and demyelinating disease can be difficult to diagnose. A 65-year-old woman gradually lost the ability to walk. Her imaging findings showed multiple spinal canal stenosis and ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament in the cervical and thoracic spine. Some intramedullary signal changes were seen at sites distant from the spinal cord compression site. Although she underwent cervical and thoracic decompression and fusion surgery relatively early, her lower-extremity strength decreased after surgery. Her aquaporin 4 (AQP4)-antibody wa

An ischemic myelopathy case series: Flaccid paraplegia following a spike ball save and numbness while walking normally.

Spinal cord infarctions in children are rare and early magnetic resonance imaging studies are often negative. A high clinical suspicion must be maintained to identify stroke and initiate workup for underlying etiology to suggest appropriate treatment. We present two cases of spinal cord infarction without major preceding trauma. The first was caused by disc herniation and external impingement of a radiculomedullary artery and the second was due to fibrocartilaginous embolism with classic imaging findings of ventral and dorsal cord infarctions, respectively. These cases were treated conservativ

Host defense or parasite cue: Skin secretions mediate interactions between amphibians and their parasites.

Amphibian skin secretions (substances produced by the amphibian plus microbiota) plausibly act as a first line of defense against parasite/pathogen attack, but may also provide chemical cues for pathogens. To clarify the role of skin secretions in host-parasite interactions, we conducted experiments using cane toads (Rhinella marina) and their lungworms (Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala) from the range-core and invasion-front of the introduced anurans' range in Australia. Depending on the geographical area, toad skin secretions can reduce the longevity and infection success of parasite larvae, or

Tracheal resection and reconstruction for post-tracheostomy tracheal stenosis treated with T-tube stenting for 10 years.

We describe the case of a patient who underwent tracheal resection for post-tracheostomy stenosis following T-tube stenting for 10 years. A 32-year-old female patient with a T-tube in the trachea was referred to us. She had brain surgery for intracranial hemorrhage 10 years ago and developed a post-tracheostomy tracheal stenosis, for which she had been treated with a T-tube. At the time of referral, she was ambulatory with a cane and otherwise independent in her daily life. We assessed her stenosis and determined that it was amenable to tracheal resection as a definitive treatment. We resected

BILATERAL RAPIDLY DESTRUCTIVE HIP OSTEOARTHRITIS: A CASE REPORT.

Although hip osteoarthritis usually shows a slow progression, a rapidly destructive osteoarthritis is observed in approximately 10% of patients. We aimed to present a case with rapidly destructive osteoarthritis in bilateral hip joints. A 78-year-old male patient was admitted due to pain in hip joints. In examination, hip movements were minimally painful and limited. The patient was able to walk independently with a cane. When he re-applied six months later, hip movements were severely limited and painful. In plain radiographs, while a slight narrowing in hip joint space, sclerosis and minimal

Traumatic subchondral fracture of the femoral head in a healed trochanteric fracture.

An 82-year-old woman sustained a trochanteric fracture of the left femur after a fall. Fracture fixation was performed using proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) II, and she was able to walk with a T-cane after 3 months. Eleven months following the operation, the patient presented with left hip pain after a fall. Radiographs showed a subchondral collapse of the femoral head located above the blade tip. The authors removed the PFNA-II and subsequently performed cemented bipolar hemiarthroplasty. Histological evaluation of the femoral head showed osteoporosis with no evidence of osteonecros

Intravenous immunoglobulin treatment successfully improved subacute progressive polyradiculoneuropathy with polyclonal gammopathy.

The present case was an elderly man with a history of gastric cancer, diffuse biliary duct stenosis and liver cirrhosis. He had markedly elevated IgG, suggesting chronic infection or inflammatory changes in the biliary duct. He developed weakness in his arms and became unable to use his hands within one month and 2 weeks later, he had difficulty walking. Based on his progressive disease course, elevated serum IgG, nerve conduction study and enhanced MRI findings, we diagnosed him as suffering from immune-mediated subacute polyradiculoneuropathy with polyclonal gammopathy, which might be relate

Reliability of measures of gait performance and oxygen consumption with stroke survivors.

This study assessed the reliability of gait performance with concurrent measures of oxygen consumption (VO2) in stroke survivors (SS). Nine male SS (60.00 +/- 15.08 yr) had a recent history of stroke (44.56 +/- 51.35 days since the stroke) and were receiving rehabilitation. Four had a right cerebrovascular accident (CVA), and five had a left CVA. Subjects walked without assistance, although three used a single cane to complete the test. Within 30 minutes, subjects completed two trials of a 5 min walk while walking back and forth on a 5 m walkway wearing a portable gas analyzer to collect sampl

Femur fractures with femoral or popliteal artery injuries in blunt trauma.

The treatment and results of 13 blunt femoral fractures with an arterial injury were reviewed. Two of the 13 patients (15%) sustained segmental (two levels) arterial injuries. Stabilization of the femur fractures were performed before arterial repair in 10 of the 13 femurs. The results were determined at an average of 4.5 years. For the eight open fractures, two patients had above-knee amputations, no limb regained > 90 degrees of knee motion, four patients required a brace or cane, and three patients have intermittent wound drainage. The five closed fractures all regained full function with f

Application of essential oils as natural antimicrobials in lactic acid bacteria contaminating fermentation for the production of organic cachaça.

Sugarcane-based fermentation is an essential process for different sectors of economic importance, such as the food industry with fermented and distilled beverages. However, this process can suffer from high contamination by wild yeasts and bacteria, especially lactic acid bacteria (LAB). This makes it necessary to use decontamination strategies and search for new methods that have a low environmental impact and contribute to the production of organic products. Among the options, oregano and thyme essential oils stand out for their antibacterial compounds. The aim of this study was to use oreg

Dual mobility design use in preventing total hip replacement dislocation following tumor resection.

INTRODUCTION: Total hip replacement (THR) following hip tumor resection incurs a high risk of dislocation. We assessed the incidence of dislocation associated with use of a dual mobility cup,and the functional results achieved. HYPOTHESIS: Use of a dual mobility cup would reduce the risk of THR instability following hip tumor resection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed dislocation rates in a retrospective series of 71 dual mobility cup THRs implanted following the resection of a tumor hip condition: 33 primary bone tumors and 38 bone metastases. The presenting pathology was diagnosed anatom

Structural Regulation of Lignin Using an Al3+/Zn2+ Bimetallic Lewis Acid System to Enhance Enzymatic Saccharification.

This study employed AlCl3/ZnCl2 bimetallic salt catalysis with ethanol organic solvent for sugar cane bagasse pretreatment. The process retained 80.12% cellulose while removing ∼70% xylan and 80.56% lignin, achieving 90.18% glucose conversion during enzymatic hydrolysis. Comprehensive characterization and DFT calculations revealed a synergistic dual-action mechanism: strong Lewis acid Al3+ extensively cleaved β-O-4 bonds (reducing them to 40.68%), whereas weak Lewis acid Zn2+ interacted broadly with side chains and aromatic rings. This synergy facilitated substantial lignin removal and minimiz

Homofermentative production of D-lactic acid from sucrose by a metabolically engineered Escherichia coli.

Escherichia coli W, a sucrose-positive strain, was engineered for the homofermentative production of D-lactic acid through chromosomal deletion of the competing fermentative pathway genes (adhE, frdABCD, pta, pflB, aldA) and the repressor gene (cscR) of the sucrose operon, and metabolic evolution for improved anaerobic cell growth. The resulting strain, HBUT-D, efficiently fermented 100 g sucrose l(-1) into 85 g D-lactic acid l(-1) in 72-84 h in mineral salts medium with a volumetric productivity of ~1 g l(-1) h(-1), a product yield of 85 % and D-lactic acid optical purity of 98.3 %, and with

Herbicides: a new threat to the Great Barrier Reef.

The runoff of pesticides (insecticides, herbicides and fungicides) from agricultural lands is a key concern for the health of the iconic Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Relatively low levels of herbicide residues can reduce the productivity of marine plants and corals. However, the risk of these residues to Great Barrier Reef ecosystems has been poorly quantified due to a lack of large-scale datasets. Here we present results of a study tracing pesticide residues from rivers and creeks in three catchment regions to the adjacent marine environment. Several pesticides (mainly herbicides) were dete
