To date, published epidemiological studies of parasitic infections in humans in the Caribbean region are very limited. Here, we report the seroprevalence of five parasitic pathogens, including Ascaris lumbricoides, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Schistosoma mansoni, and Toxocara canis in 435 serum samples collected between 2008 and 2011 from pregnant women in ten Caribbean islands. We tested the serum samples for IgG antibodies against the five parasites by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Among them, 66.2 % were serologically positive for at least one parasite. The most pre…

Understanding the connections between sea turtle populations is fundamental for their effective conservation. Brazil hosts important hawksbill feeding areas, but few studies have focused on how they connect with nesting populations in the Atlantic. Here, we (1) characterized mitochondrial DNA control region haplotypes of immature hawksbills feeding along the coast of Brazil (five areas ranging from equatorial to temperate latitudes, 157 skin samples), (2) analyzed genetic structure among Atlantic hawksbill feeding populations, and (3) inferred natal origins of hawksbills in Brazilian waters us

Human infection with the sheep liver fluke Fasciola hepatica is a global zoonosis that usually parallels the prevalence of infection in sheep and other ruminants. The disease is endemic in South and Central America, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean region, many parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Australia, and China. There have been a number of focal outbreaks reported from Europe, including southern France and the Mediterranean region. Since acute fascioliasis has rarely been reported in the United States, physicians in this country frequently overlook the diagnosis. Therefore, we report a cas…

BACKGROUND: Envenomation by snakes, scorpions, spiders, and caterpillars remains a major but unevenly addressed public health challenge in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Environmental change, urbanisation, and ecological disruption are changing the distribution of medically important species, while persistent gaps in surveillance, clinical management, and antivenom availability limit prevention and care. In this study, we analysed epidemiological trends, health system capacity, and the regional antivenom ecosystem to inform strategic public health priorities.
METHODS: We analysed seco

BACKGROUND: Oral cavity cancer represents a public health challenge in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), where exposure to modifiable risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol remains high and inequalities in access to health services contribute to delayed diagnosis and poor outcomes. This study aimed to develop consensus-based recommendations to strengthen the prevention and early detection of oral cavity cancer and oral potentially malignant disorders in LAC.
METHODS: A multi-phase study using a Delphi approach was conducted. An initial qualitative survey with regional experts identifie

The substitute name Bairdia bradyi applies only to a species living in New Caledonia, which has not been reported since its original description as Bairdia foveolata in1868. Although for a time B. bradyi was widely identified in the Caribbean region and Gulf of Mexico, those reports are taxonomically heterogeneous, applying to at least eight different species in three genera. Nevertheless, repetition of this misidentification contributed to its general acceptance, providing a taxonomic example of the Illusory Truth Effect. Here, eight new species of Bairdoppilata are described from the Caribbe…

The establishment of brain banks is a strategic initiative to advance research on neurodegenerative diseases in Latin America. This article highlights the development, operations, and multidisciplinary framework of the National Dementia BioBank in Mexico and the National Brain Bank in the Dominican Republic. Both centers focus on the molecular characterization of pathological proteins central to Alzheimer's disease, such as tau and amyloid beta. Standardized protocols have been implemented for tissue donation, preservation, and post mortem analysis. Beyond supporting diagnostics and research,

In Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries, women are particularly affected by food insecurity (FI). This gender gap can be amplified at certain key periods in life, particularly during pregnancy, with negative consequences on maternal and infant health. In the current geopolitical and health context, it is essential to take stock of the prevalence of FI among pregnant women in this region and the associated economic and psychosocial determinants. From 168 publications identified on Pubmed and Scopus, this systematic review selected 13 publications in 7 LAC countries. Although the publish

In the Caribbean there is limited data on orthostatic hypertension (OHT) in elderly hypertensive patients with atherosclerotic disease who are at risk for cardiovascular events. The authors examined the association of antihypertensive classes of drugs with diastolic OHT in patients 60 year and older with hypertension and hyperlipidemia attending public primary care facilities. These relationships were evaluated in a cross-sectional study of hypertensive hyperlipidemic older patients (n = 400) to determine orthostatic changes in blood pressure based on seated to standing measurements. OHT was d

Mercury (Hg) concentrations have significantly increased in oceans during the last century. This element accumulates in marine fauna and can reach toxic levels. Seafood consumption is the main pathway of methylmercury (MeHg) toxicity in humans. Here, we analyzed total Hg (T-Hg) concentrations in two oceanic squid species (Ommastrephes bartramii and Thysanoteuthis rhombus) of an increasing commercial interest off Martinique, French West Indies. Stable isotope ratios reveal a negative linear relationship between δ15N or δ13C in diamondback squid samples. No significant trend was observed between

Human enteric pathogens are a major global concern, as they are responsible for thousands of preventable deaths every year. New pathogens in wastewater are constantly emerging. For example, SARS-CoV-2 has been recently detected in domestic sewage and primary sludge. Knowledge about the reduction of viruses in wastewater treatment and their partitioning between the treated liquid effluent versus the sludge or biosolids is still very scarce, especially in countries with emerging economies and tropical climates. Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors are among the top three most commonly

In 2018, the Mexican Caribbean coast received a massive influx of pelagic Sargassum spp. that accumulated and decayed on beaches producing organic decomposition products that made the water turbid and brown. Between May and September of the same year there were several reports of mass mortality of marine biota in this area. From these reports we estimate that organisms belonging to 78 faunal species died as result of this event, with demersal neritic fish and Crustacea being the most affected groups. The cause of mortality appears to be the combined effect of high ammonium and hydrogen sulfide

The CARIACO (Carbon Retention in a Colored Ocean) Ocean Time-Series Program station, located at 10.50°N, 64.66°W, observed biogeochemical and ecological processes in the Cariaco Basin of the southwestern Caribbean Sea from November 1995 to January 2017. The program completed 232 monthly core cruises, 40 sediment trap deployment cruises, and 40 microbiogeochemical process cruises. Upwelling along the southern Caribbean Sea occurs from approximately November to August. High biological productivity (320-628 g C m-2 y-1) leads to large vertical fluxes of particulate organic matter, but only approx
