Rare transthyretin gene variants (p.Ala45Thr, p.Val91Ala, p.Phe53Cys, p.Ala101Val, p.Glu109Lys, and p.Phe53Leu): diagnostic pitfalls and clinical characteristics of Polish patients with transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis.

The Amazon is renowned worldwide for its biological significance, but it also harbors substantial mineral reserves. Among these, the ferruginous geosystems of the region are critical for iron ore extraction, accounting for 10% of Brazil's export revenue. Additionally, this region holds a significant speleological heritage with more than 1,000 caves. However, cave conservation efforts are often in conflict with land use, necessitating mediation through environmental regulations. While conservation decisions typically consider only the caves' characteristics, such an approach fails to account fo…

Karst Cave EffectInduced Dandelion-Like Porous Cobalt-Nickel Silicate Hydroxide: Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction Performance via LOM Mechanism.

Enhancing the kinetics and mass transfer efficiency is the central issue in the research of the catalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, an in situ hydrothermal transformation method for synthesizing ultra-porous cobalt-nickel silicate hydroxide (CNSH) with a layered double hydroxide (LDH) is demonstrated. This in situ variation from well-crystallized carbonate to amorphous silicate hydroxide leads to a dandelion-like structure originating from framework reconstruction as topotactic transformation process, defined as "karst cave effect". Moreover, the specific coordination environment

Viral Ecology and Natural Infection Dynamics of Kaeng Khoi Virus in Cave-Dwelling Wrinkle-Lipped Free-Tailed Bats (Chaerephon plicatus) in Thailand.

Kaeng Khoi virus (KKV; Order: Bunyavirales), is an endemic viral infection of the wrinkle-lipped free-tailed bat (Chaerephon plicatus aka Tadarida plicata plicata). Little is known about the ecology and maintenance of KKV within the bat population, nor the infection dynamics and transmission among bats or between bats and other vertebrates. Therefore, KKV was studied in Kaeng Khoi cave, Saraburi province, Thailand, during 1973-1974 with the objectives to (1) characterize the seasonal infection rates of KKV in the context of the bat population ecology, and (2) describe the infection dynamics an

Trigeminal Neuralgia Caused by Vascular Compression from the Petrous Carotid Artery with Bony Erosion and Meckel Cave Encephalocele: Clinical Imaging with Surgical Video.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is most commonly caused by neurovascular compression of the superior cerebellar artery. We present the first reported TN case where nerve compression was caused by the petrous internal carotid artery in the vicinity of a Meckel cave (MC) encephalocele. The patient underwent a pterional craniotomy for decompression of the gasserian ganglion and trigeminal nerve branches. All symptoms were resolved post surgery. We surmise that the principal cause of the TN was vascular compression from an exposed petrous internal carotid artery in the presence of an encephalocele. Caus

Ochre and pigment use at Hohle Fels cave: Results of the first systematic review of ochre and ochre-related artefacts from the Upper Palaeolithic in Germany.

Though many European Upper Palaeolithic sites document early examples of symbolic material expressions (e.g., cave art, personal ornaments, figurines), there exist few reports on the use of earth pigments outside of cave art-and occasionally Neanderthal-contexts. Here, we present the first in-depth study of the diachronic changes in ochre use throughout an entire Upper Palaeolithic sequence at Hohle Fels cave, Germany, spanning from ca. 44,000-14,500 cal. yr. BP. A reassessment of the assemblage has yielded 869 individual ochre artefacts, of which 27 show traces of anthropogenic modification.

Long-term survival of diffuse large B cell lymphoma of the trigeminal region extending to the Meckel's cave treated by CHASER therapy: case report.

A 52-year-old man with a history of malignant lymphoma of the cecum presented with lancinating facial pain in the left. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a tumor in the Meckel's cave extending along the trigeminal nerve. The tumor was partially removed via left retrosigmoid lateral suboccipital craniotomy. Histological examination showed findings consistent with diffuse large B cell lymphoma, which was later confirmed to be metastatic lesion from the cecal lesion. Postoperative chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, high dose, cytarabine, steroid (dexamethasone), etoposide, and rituximab

ESR at Treugol'naya Cave, Northern Caucasus Mt., Russia: dating Russia's oldest archaeological site and paleoclimatic change in Oxygen Isotope Stage 11.

At 1510 m asl, Treugol'naya Cave, Russia, is the highest cave showing evidence for human occupation in eastern Europe. Layers 4-7 in the 4.5-m-thick sequence yielded many artifacts representing Lower Paleolithic pebble and flake tool industries. Abundant faunal remains include extinct Middle Pleistocene species. Palynological, paleomagnetic, and microsedimentological analyses indicate that several climatic changes of different magnitudes occurred in the sequence. To determine absolute ages for Treugol'naya, 32 independent subsamples from nine ungulate teeth collected from the Lower Paleolithic

Variability versus heterogeneity in syndromal hypothalamic hamartoblastoma and related disorders: review and delineation of the cerebro-acro-visceral early lethality (CAVE) multiplex syndrome.

We report on a case of neonatal hypothalamic hamartoblastoma with holoprosencephaly, Hirschsprung disease, and tetramelic postaxial polydactyly. Twenty-seven previous cases of congenital hypothalamic embryonic tumours with associated congenital defects are reviewed. A classification in isolated, associated, and syndromal forms is proposed. The difficulties encountered in differential diagnosis between the syndromal form (mainly represented by the Pallister-Hall syndrome) and related diseases as Smith-Lemli-Opitz type II, holoprosencephaly-polydactyly, orofaciodigital type VI and hydrolethalus

Prehistoric parasitism in Tennessee: evidence from the analysis of desiccated fecal material collected from Big Bone Cave, Van Buren County, Tennessee.

Eight samples of desiccated human feces collected from Big Bone Cave (40VB103), Van Buren County, Tennessee, were analyzed to determine the presence of ecto- and endoparasitic infection among the prehistoric population using the cave. Radiocarbon-dated torch material from the cave indicated that it was a locus of human activity 2,177 +/- 145 yr ago. Parasitic species identified were: Ascaris lumbricoides, Enterobius vermicularis, fleas of the tribe Phalacropsyllini, and protozoan cysts. The cysts were identified as Giardia using an indirect immunofluorescent antibody test. The only report of G

New signs of skeletal trauma in the Upper Paleolithic "Principe" from Arene Candide Cave (Liguria, Italy) bear novel insights into the circumstances of his death.

Despite ample evidence that Paleolithic humans hunted large and dangerous carnivores, such as lions, leopards, and bears, skeletal evidence of negative interactions with wild fauna is extremely rare in the Homo sapiens paleobiological record. To date, the only individual for whom an animal attack has been hypothesized based on their pattern of traumatic lesions is the Gravettian adolescent buried at Arene Candide Cave in Liguria (northwestern Italy; 27,900-27,300 cal BP) nicknamed "Il Principe" (The Prince) due to the rich grave goods placed in the burial. Since its excavation in 1942, it was

Combined Petrosal Approach for Resection of a Large Trigeminal Schwannoma With Meckel's Cave Involvement-Part I: Anatomic Rationale and Analysis: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

Resection of large trigeminal schwannomas involving both posterior and middle cranial fossae is challenging. The depth of the surgical target in the superomedial corner of the cerebellopontine angle and the petrous apex makes for a difficult lesion to favorably access, expose, and safely resect. Judicious planning of a skull base approach is therefore the most crucial step in successful management of these formidable tumors. When properly chosen, planned, and executed, the combined petrosal approach sets the stage for an optimal exposure of such tumors that involve both posterior and middle cr

Immunohistochemical localization of atrial natriuretic factor and autoradiographic distribution of atrial natriuretic factor-binding sites in the brain of the cave salamander Hydromantes genei (Amphibia, Plethodontidae).

The distribution of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF)-like immunoreactivity in the central nervous system of the cave salamander Hydromantes genei (Amphibia, Plethodontidae) was investigated by using antisera raised against rat and human ANF(1-28). Concurrently, the location of ANF-binding sites was determined by autoradiography, using radioiodinated human ANF(1-28) as a tracer. In several regions of the brain, including the olfactory bulb, the preoptic area, the ventral thalamus, the tectum of the mesencephalon, and the choroid plexuses inside the ventricles, a good correlation was observed bet

Microvascular decompression through an anterior transpetrosal approach for trigeminal neuralgia caused by persistent primitive trigeminal artery variant traversing Meckel's cave: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is most commonly caused by neurovascular compression, and microvascular decompression (MVD) remains the standard surgical treatment for patients refractory to medical therapy. Rarely, TN is associated with persistent primitive trigeminal artery (PPTA) or its PPTA variant (PPTAv). TN caused by PPTAv traversing Meckel's cave is extremely rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 68-year-old female presented with TN affecting the left V2 and V3 distributions. Despite pharmacological management, her pain progressively worsened; therefore, MVD was performed. Meckel Cave Epidermoid Cyst Presenting as Multiple Cranial Nerve Deficits Due to Indirect Tumoral Compression of the Cavernous Sinus: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Epidermoid cysts in Meckel cave are exceedingly rare. Since 1971, only 17 cases have been reported in the literature, with most patients presenting with trigeminal hypesthesia. However, outgrowth of these lesions from Meckel cave can rarely lead to compression of the proximate cavernous sinus and the neurovascular structures contained within. To date, 2 cases have reported a Meckel cave epidermoid cyst presenting clinically as an intracavernous cranial nerve palsy, presumably a clinical manifestation of cavernous sinus compression from the lesion. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a c

Evaluating the risk of tick-borne relapsing fever among occupational cavers-Austin, TX, 2017.

Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is a potentially serious spirochetal infection caused by certain species of Borrelia and acquired through the bite of Ornithodoros ticks. In 2017, Austin Public Health, Austin, TX, identified five cases of febrile illness among employees who worked in caves. A cross-sectional serosurvey and interview were conducted for 44 employees at eight organizations that conduct cave-related work. Antibodies against TBRF-causing Borrelia were detected in the serum of five participants, four of whom reported recent illness. Seropositive employees entered significantly more…

A new genus and species of a submarine cave crab of the family Plagusiidae Dana, 1851 (Crustacea: Brachyura: Grapsoidea) from Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan.

Caligoplagusia okinawa n. gen. & n. sp., assigned to the brachyuran family Plagusiidae Dana, 1851 is described on the basis of a male and a female specimens collected from a semi-submerged marine cave on the limestone shore of Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. The new monotypic genus is most similar to Euchirograpsus H. Milne Edwards, 1853 and Miersiograpsus Trkay, 1978 in that the frontal margin lacks a deep sublateral cleft adjacent to the orbit, but differs significantly by its subhexagonal carapace shape, the anterolateral margin of the carapace with three teeth including

A relictual troglomorphic harvestman discovered in a volcanic cave of western Argentina: Otilioleptes marcelae, new genus, new species, and Otilioleptidae, new family (Arachnida, Opiliones, Gonyleptoidea).

The troglomorphic harvestman Otilioleptes marcelae gen. nov., sp. nov. from the basaltic cave Doña Otilia, Payunia region, Mendoza Province, Argentina, is described. Its systematic affinities were studied through cladistic and Bayesian analyses that included representatives of Gonyleptoidea; it was determined to represent a new monotypic family, Otilioleptidae fam. nov., occupying a basal position within the clade Laminata. This species shows accentuated troglomorphic traits, typical for troglobitic harvestmen: elongated appendages, depigmentation, reduction of eyes and fading of scutal sulci.

Spider webs as environmental indicators.

Analysis of spider webs from limestone arches in New South Wales, Australia showed levels of lead and zinc to be several times higher at Jenolan Caves than reference sites at Abercrombie and Wombeyan Caves. The high concentrations at Jenolan were attributed to emissions from motor vehicles that travel through the arch. Analysis of water-soluble ions in webs from Jenolan and Abercrombie Caves showed large differences between the sites, which could be explained by differences in the geology and biology of the cave environments. Spider webs proved useful indicators of environmental chemistry and …

Histoplasmosis in Belize, Central America.

After two small outbreaks of histoplasmosis in Belize, an epidemiologic survey was carried out. Forty percent of 141 persons in two groups tested demonstrated a positive histoplasmin reaction. In one study group there was a significant association between visiting caves and histoplasmin positivity. Histoplasma capsulatum was not isolated in 20 soil specimens collected from outbreak-associated caves, but was isolated from 1 of 26 bats collected from the same caves. The presence of histoplasmosis in Belize, C.A. is documented, and this disease should be considered in differential diagnosis in pa…
