An edible kanamycin sulfate cross-linked cellulose active against multiple pathogenic bacteria.

In this work, an edible cellulose-based antibacterial material was prepared by cross-linking α-cellulose and kanamycin sulfate via glutaraldehyde to form kanamycin sulfate-glutaraldehyde-cellulose. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction results indicated that the kanamycin sulfate molecule was cross-linked with the molecular chain of cellulose. The optimal mass ratio of kanamycin sulfate to α-cellulose was 1:100 and the degree of substitution reached 1.11%. The optimal kanamycin sulfate-glutaraldehyde-cellulose material showed an excelle…

Amylose/cellulose nanofiber composites for all-natural, fully biodegradable and flexible bioplastics.

Thermoplastic, polysaccharide-based plastics are environmentally friendly. However, typical shortcomings include lack of water resistance and poor mechanical properties. Nanocomposite manufacturing using pure, highly linear, polysaccharides can overcome such limitations. Cast nanocomposites were fabricated with plant engineered pure amylose (AM), produced in bulk quantity in transgenic barley grain, and cellulose nanofibers (CNF), extracted from agrowaste sugar beet pulp. Morphology, crystallinity, chemical heterogeneity, mechanics, dynamic mechanical, gas and water permeability, and contact a…

Preparation of AAEK-functionalized cellulose film with antibacterial and anti-adhesion activities.

Bacterial adhesion infection caused by medical materials in clinical application has become a serious threat, and it urgently needs new strategies to deal with these clinical challenges. The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of surface-decorated aryl (β-amino) ethyl ketones (AAEK), a promising sorting enzyme A (SrtA) inhibitor of Staphylococcus aureus, to improve the anti-adhesion ability of biomaterials. AAEK was covalently grafted onto cellulose films (CF) via copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne 1, 3-dipolar cycloaddition click reaction. The data of contact angle measurements, …

Cellulose-rich secondary walls in wave-swept red macroalgae fortify flexible tissues.

Cellulosic secondary walls evolved convergently in coralline red macroalgae, reinforcing tissues against wave-induced breakage, despite differences in cellulose abundance, microfibril orientation, and wall structure. Cellulose-enriched secondary cell walls are the hallmark of woody vascular plants, which develop thickened walls to support upright growth and resist toppling in terrestrial environments. Here we investigate the striking presence and convergent evolution of cellulosic secondary walls in coralline red algae, which reinforce thalli against forces applied by crashing waves. Despite o…

FNA cytology of postoperative pseudotumoral lesions induced by oxidized cellulose hemostatic agents.

BACKGROUND: The use of topically applied hemostatic substances during surgery has become a common practice. In some cases, the material is not absorbed or induces a granulomatous reaction resulting in a pseudotumoral lesion. With imaging studies, it is not possible to differentiate this from a tumor recurrence or abscess. This study describes the authors' cytologic experience with a large series of pseudotumoral lesions induced by oxidized cellulose, one of the most commonly used hemostatic agents. Almost no cytologic descriptions are available in the medical literature. METHODS: Sixteen pati…

Surface engineered excipients: I. improved functional properties of fine grade microcrystalline cellulose.

Excipients with good flowability, bulk density as well as compaction properties are desired for use in tableting since they play important roles in formulation development and processing, including, handling, mixing, feeding and compaction. The objective of this paper is to examine the feasibility of using dry coating based surface modification of microcrystalline cellulose, Avicel PH-105, to produce an engineered fine grade (<30 μm) excipient that has all three desired properties. Using a material sparing high-intensity vibrational mixer, Avciel PH-105 is dry coated with 1 wt% Aerosil 200, se…

DETC-based bacterial cellulose bio-curatives for topical treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis.

The treatment of leishmaniasis still relies on drugs with potentially serious adverse effects. Herein, we tested a topical formulation of bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes containing Diethyldithiocarbamate (DETC), a superoxide dismutase 1 inhibitor. Leishmania-infected macrophages exposed to BC-DETC resulted in parasite killing, without pronounced toxic effects to host cells. This outcome was associated with lower SOD1 activity and higher production of superoxide and cytokine mediators. Topical application of BC-DETC significantly decreased lesion size, parasite load and the inflammatory resp…

Tunable Aggregation and Gelation of Thermoresponsive Suspensions of Polymer-Grafted Cellulose Nanocrystals.

The colloidal stability together with the tunable aggregation and viscoelastic properties of thermoresponsive polymer-grafted cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were investigated. TEMPO oxidation of CNCs followed by peptidic coupling in water were used to covalently graft thermosensitive Jeffamine polyetheramine M2005 chains onto the surface of CNCs. The resulting polymer-decorated particles (M2005-g-CNCs) exhibited new colloidal properties, by their ability to perfectly redisperse in water and organic solvents such as toluene, dichloromethane or DMF after freeze-drying. In addition, they presented…

Treatment of tympanic membrane perforation using bacterial cellulose: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Promising treatments for tympanic membrane perforation closure have been studied. Therapies derived from tissue engineering probably eliminate the need for conventional surgery. Bacterial cellulose is presented as an alternative that is safe, biocompatible, and has low toxicity. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect on healing of direct application of a bacterial cellulose graft on the tympanic membrane compared to the conventional approach with autologous fascia. METHODS: Randomized controlled trial. Forty patients with tympanic membrane perforations secondary to chronic otiti…

Preparation of porous cellulose 3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate hybrid organosilica particles for chromatographic applications.

Organic-inorganic hybrids incorporating cellulose tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) (CDMPC)-functionalized silica particles can exhibit a high loading capacity with high loadings of the chiral selector. These materials offer considerable potential for use in preparative chiral separations. However, the preparation of these hybrid particles with high surface areas and controlled organic/inorganic ratios is challenging. We have found that by controlling the pH of sol-gel step and regulating the ratio of the inorganic precursor over CDMPC, unique functional hybrid particles could be prepared with…

Cellulose accessibility determines the rate of enzymatic hydrolysis of steam-pretreated spruce.

Spruce chips steam-pretreated at various conditions, according to a central composite design, were used for investigating the influence of p … led that the higher rate of hydrolysis of these materials was due to increased accessibility of the cellulose. An accessible cellulose fraction is thus more important than a low surface lignin content for the enzymatic hydrolysis of steam-pretreated spruce.

Evaluation of microcrystalline cellulose II (MCCII) as an alternative extrusion-spheronization aid.

Microcrystalline cellulose II (MCCII) is a different allomorph of MCC that can be used as a filler and a disintegrant for direct compression. MCCII was studied as new pelletization aid with the aim to prepare pellets with a faster drug release than MCCI-based pellets. MCCII-based pellets showed an immediate diphenydramineHCl release profile comparable to that of Benadryl and a faster griseofulvin release than MCCI-based pellets. MCCII offers potential to use as an alternative pelletization aid.

Biotemplated preparation of CdS nanoparticles/bacterial cellulose hybrid nanofibers for photocatalysis application.

In this work, we describe a novel facile and effective strategy to prepare micrometer-long hybrid nanofibers by deposition of CdS nanoparticles onto the substrate of hydrated bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCF). Hexagonal phase CdS nanocrystals were achieved via a simple hydrothermal reaction between CdCl(2) and thiourea at relatively low temperature. The prepared pristine BCF and the CdS/BCF hybrid nanofibers were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UV-vis absorption spectroscopy (UV-vis), and X-ray photoelectron…

Chiral separations and quantitative analysis of optical isomers on cellulose tribenzoate plates.

In this paper new cellulose tribenzoate/gypsum layers in the ratio up to 8/1 (w/w) were investigated for the chiral resolution of closely related aromatic ketones (e.g. tetralones and indanones), alcohols (e.g. benzhydrols) and racemates or enantiomers of other compound classes (e.g. dinitrophenyl amino acids). Among 22 investigated compounds, 16 racemates were baseline or partially resolved by eluting with methanol or 2-propanol/water mixtures on 4/1 (w/w) layers. The best results were compared with those achieved on microcrystalline cellulose triacetate plates and on cellulose tribenzoate co…

Investigation of novel quantum dots/proteins/cellulose bioconjugate using NSOM and fluorescence.

We investigated the engineered bioconjugate of cadmium selenide core/zinc sulfide shell, (CdSe)ZnS, quantum dots (QDs) with genetically modified proteins using fluorescence spectroscopy, near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) and spectroscopy (NSOS). The protein polymer was allowed to self-assemble to the bacterial microcrystalline cellulose surface through the cellulosic binding domain. Results from the sample containing the QDs/protein/cellulose assemblies suggest that QDs were arrayed along the cellulose surface. The spectroscopic change of spectroscopic properties of the QDs upon bi…
