Tracheal ceramic rings for tracheomalacia: a review after 17 years.

BACKGROUND: Despite different support techniques, the surgical management of tracheomalacia is still a challenging problem. Satisfactory results after internal stenting are above 80%, whereas, when performing external stenting using biocompatible ceramic rings, results are reported at over 90%. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the efficiency of surgical treatment in patients with segmentary tracheomalacia using external ceramic ring grafts. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we collected data from 12 patients who underwent surgery during the last 17 years for symptomati

All-ceramic crowns on modified CeraOne abutments: a case report.

Single-tooth implants were used to replace congenitally absent maxillary lateral incisors in a 17-year-old patient. The inclination of the alveolar process caused a severe discrepancy between the axes of the planned implant and the crown. To avoid the need for a labial screw opening in the crown or labial overcontouring, a CeraOne abutment of the Brånemark system was modified by selective grinding in the dental laboratory. Individual all-ceramic crowns were fabricated with the Celay In-Ceram system.

A safety study of thallium-containing ceramic superconductor material in rats.

Thallium is a highly toxic cumulative poison in humans and animals. The use of the metal as a component in ceramic superconductor material (CSM) raised concern about the health risk of CSM to children accidentally swallowing some of the CSM or to occupationally-exposed workers in the electronics industry. This study examined the biological availability of CSM by quantifying the thallium content in organs, blood and fecal matter of Sprague-Dawley rats after a single acute oral exposure to CSM and compares these values to similar thallium measurements from identical exposure to thallium sulfate.

Vertebral body replacement with a ceramic prosthesis for metastatic spinal tumors.

STUDY DESIGN: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical outcome of vertebral replacement surgery with our unique ceramic prosthesis for spinal metastases. OBJECTIVES: To indicate the results of vertebral replacement surgery with a ceramic prosthesis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spinal metastasis often involves the vertebral bodies, of which abnormal fracture causes intractable pain and paresis. For such conditions, laminectomy or irradiation can have no effect because they do not improve spinal stability. Autogenous bone or bone cement are not durable materials, and fatigue fracture o

Resin-bonded ceramic onlays for retained primary molars with infraocclusion.

In some patients, primary molars with no permanent successor can be retained for an indefinite time; however, if occlusal relationships necessitate intraocclusal augmentation, cast ceramic onlays can provide an excellent solution. This paper reports the case of a teenager in whom two cast ceramic onlays were bonded with resin to retained mandibular primary molars, to create an esthetic and functional occlusion.

Effect of calcium phosphate ceramic particle insertion on tooth eruption.

The effects of calcium phosphate ceramic implants on tooth eruption were investigated radiographically and histologically in 20 3-month-old dogs. Four kinds of ceramic particles were used: dense and porous hydroxyapatite particles, and dense and porous tricalcium phosphate particles. These particles were implanted in the sockets after deciduous tooth extraction. The four types of calcium phosphate ceramic particles produced similar radiographic and histologic findings. There was no delay of tooth eruption, no dysplasia, and no resorption of dental hard tissue.

Bilateral open laminoplasty using ceramic laminas for cervical myelopathy.

Evaluation was done of 65 patients with cervical myelopathy treated by bilateral open laminoplasty using artificial laminas, between 1984 and 1988, who had been followed for more than 2 years. The mean recovery rate on the Japanese Orthopaedic Association scoring system was 65% in all cases, and 72% in the cases with no other complications. The artificial laminas appeared well adapted to the laminas in computed tomography and dynamic radiographic examinations, and there were no cases of reduction of the enlarged canal. Postoperative restriction of the range of motion of the cervical spine was

Ceramic interspinous block (CISB) assisted anterior interbody fusion.

Ceramic interspinous block (CISB) assisted anterior fusion system was developed. The system is recommended for patients with symptomatic disc degeneration and destructive lesions of the lumbar spine. One hundred and six patients who underwent CISB-assisted anterior fusion by one doctor (H.T.) from 1981 to 1987 were followed-up 2-6 years after the operation. A comparative study of the results between the CISB-assisted group and the CISB-unassisted anterior fusion group, performed by the same doctor during 1979-1981 for deranged disc, was also done. Satisfactory relief of back and leg pains, mar

Effects of sputtered metal oxide films on the ceramic-to-metal bond.

The application of a thin oxide film is seen as a method of improving the ceramic-to-metal bond. Using sputter coating to form oxide films allows control of its thickness. The thickness of the oxide layer can also be controlled by sputter coating. Films produced by sputtering, in themselves, have superior bond strengths in that the high-energy levels that are used in the technique drive the coating material into the atomic lattice of the substrate material (dental gold). Remaining to be determined are optimum film thickness and the oxide to be used. However, the present study opens a field of

Tissue response to implants of calcium phosphate ceramic in the rabbit spine.

Recent studies have shown that porous calcium phosphates provide a scaffold for bony ingrowth in various anatomic sites. In this preliminary investigation a type of porous calcium phosphate ceramic was implanted in the vertebral columns of 21 rabbits; the ceramic was studied as a possible bone graft substitute for use in spinal fusions. Animals were killed at three, six, eight, 12, and 24 weeks. Roentgenograms and histologic sections of the implant site were then obtained. Bony tissue ingrowth was progressing during the study period. Woven bone was found by six weeks after implantation, and la

Unveiling the Metabolic Fingerprint of Occupational Exposure in Ceramic Manufactory Workers.

In this study, for the first time urinary NMR-based metabolomics was applied to investigate the physiological alterations associated with occupational exposure in ceramic manufacturing workers. Multivariate analysis revealed a distinctive metabolic signature with exposure, characterized by a depletion of both aliphatic and aromatic amino acids and a concomitant accumulation of branched-chain amino acid catabolites. Alterations in tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediates, including citrate and succinate, suggest an involvement of mitochondrial energy metabolism, reflecting adaptive response

Annotated dataset for surface defect detection on ceramic substrates in manufacturing.

Ceramic substrates are critical foundational materials in semiconductor packaging and electronic device manufacturing. Surface defects on these substrates-such as adhesion, scar, spot, uneven, abnormal thickness, and edge defect-directly impact device performance and reliability. However, existing datasets commonly suffer from issues such as limited defect types, low image resolution, lack of realistic manufacturing process backgrounds, and incomplete annotations. To our knowledge, no publicly available dataset currently covers all six ceramic-substrate defect categories included in this study

Structural Design of Ceramic Membranes to Mitigate Fouling in Membrane Bioreactors.

Despite the robust mechanical and chemical stability that make hollow flat-sheet ceramic membranes highly attractive for membrane bioreactors (MBRs), the fundamental relationship between their structural design, specifically pore size and structural symmetry, and biological fouling behavior remains elusive. To decouple the effects of membrane architecture on fouling mechanisms, a series of symmetric and asymmetric hollow flat-sheet alumina membranes were systematically engineered. Symmetric architectures with tunable pore sizes were fabricated by controlling aggregate particle sizes, whereas a

The hole story: a case report of a ceramic implant's unexpected journey.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Catastrophic failure of ceramic-on-polyethylene (CoP) total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a rare but severe complication. While ceramics offer superior wear resistance, polyethylene liner degradation can progress silently over decades, culminating in component failure, metallosis, and functional decline. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the case of a 66-year-old female who presented with pain and mechanical symptoms 20 years after a CoP "DURALOC" Exeter THA. Imaging revealed eccentric polyethylene wear and acetabular osteolysis. Intraoperatively, the ceramic femoral he…

High-Modulus Homochiral Torsional Oxide Ceramic Artificial Muscles.

Fiber-based artificial muscles are soft actuators used to mimic the movement of human muscles. However, using high modulus oxide ceramics to fabricate artificial muscles with high energy and power is a challenge as they are prone to brittle fracture during torsion. Here, a ceramic metallization strategy is reported that solves the problem of low torsion and low ductility of alumina (Al2O3) ceramics by chemical plating a thin copper layer on alumina filaments. These filaments with a high modulus of ≈180 GPa can be twisted into chiral coiled artificial muscles, exhibiting a unique electric therm…

Detection of ceramic stress intensity factor based on digital holography.

This study investigates the application of digital holography in investigating fracture problems of the ceramic material magnesium oxide under three-point bending fracture experiments. A digital holographic optical path system was constructed for this purpose. Three-point bending experiments were performed on magnesium oxide samples using the system, with holograms of the specimens recorded both before and after the application of loads. By utilizing the angular spectrum diffraction reconstruction algorithm, we obtained the complex amplitude of the object wave under varying load conditions and
