Variation in decision-making on out-of-home placements in child and family welfare services: A new approach.

BACKGROUND: Variation across local administrative units (municipalities) is critical in child welfare, as inconsistencies in out-of-home placement decisions can create inequalities in children's access to support. Given the impact of placement decisions on a child's well-being, and long-term outcomes, ensuring fairness and consistency is essential in promoting equal opportunities for all children. OBJECTIVE AND SETTING: This study explores municipal variation in out-of-home placement decisions following referrals in Danish child and family welfare using 52.649 out-of-sample predicted risk sco

Comparison of Institutionally Reared and Maltreated Children on Socioemotional and Biological Functioning.

The current study compared behavioral and adrenocortical functioning of maltreated (N = 91) and comparably aged (1.5-3 years) institutionally-reared children soon after (1.5-2.5 months) placement in foster care or adoptive homes, respectively. Foster and adoptive parents reported on the children's socioemotional competence and behavior problems, experimenters scored fear and positive affect to laboratory tasks, and diurnal cortisol measures were obtained. We sought to address whether these early contexts, characterized by different types of neglect and deprivation, have differential effects on

Predicting marital infidelity based on incompatible mental schemas and emotional divorce in women referring to counseling centers in Iran.

This study investigated the extent to which schema modes and emotional divorce predict marital infidelity among women seeking services at counseling centers in Urmia, Iran. Using a descriptive-correlational design, the target population included all women referred between 2023 and 2025. To minimize issues of missing or invalid responses, 231 women with reported communication difficulties and elevated risk of infidelity were recruited through voluntary sampling. Data were gathered using scales measuring attitudes toward infidelity, schema modes, and emotional divorce. Pearson correlations and s

Profiles of Childhood Abuse and Biopsychosocial Outcomes in Adulthood: A Nationally Representative Sample Analysis.

The study explored the profiles of childhood abuse and biopsychosocial outcomes in adulthood, as well as early predictive factors. Data were drawn from Wave I (ages 11-21 years) and IV (ages 24-33 years) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health dataset (N = 5112). Latent profile analysis (LPA) was employed to identify distinct patterns of childhood abuse and biopsychosocial outcomes (cardiometabolic risk, depressive symptoms, and socioeconomic functioning) in adulthood. Multinomial logistic regression was subsequently utilised to examine the predictive roles of early de

Evidence-Based Psychotherapy for Disruptive Behavior Disorders.

Disruptive behavior disorder (DBD), which includes oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder, is among the most common externalizing disorders in childhood and adolescence. This review aimed to identify evidence-based psychotherapies for DBD and summarize their empirical foundations and characteristics. We searched for randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews using PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar, focusing on major evidence-based guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), American Psychological Association (APA), and Agency for Health

Can Housing and Service Interventions Reduce Family Separations for Families Who Experience Homelessness?

Family break-up is common in families experiencing homelessness. This paper examines the extent of separations of children from parents and of partners from each other and whether housing and service interventions reduced separations and their precursors among 1,857 families across 12 sites who participated in the Family Options Study. Families in shelters were randomized to offers of one of three interventions: permanent housing subsidies that reduce expenditures for rent to 30% of families' income, temporary rapid re-housing subsidies with some services directed at housing and employment, an

Improving outcomes for pregnant and parenting foster care youth with severe mental illness: an evaluation of a transitional living program.

OBJECTIVE: This study provides preliminary evidence for the effectiveness of a residential program with comprehensive wrap-around services for pregnant and parenting foster care youth with severe mental illness or severe emotional disturbance who are preparing to transition to independent living. METHODS: Twenty-five females ages 18 to 21 participated. Program effectiveness was determined by tracking monthly status changes, such as education, employment, and hospitalizations, as well as by comparing scores on four bi-annually administered standardized assessments of parenting competency and s

Child sexual abuse: can anatomy explain the presentation?

This article discusses a 4-year-old girl who displayed behavioral symptoms consistent with posttraumatic stress disorder. She was recently placed in foster care due to emotional and physical neglect. During her clinic visit, she disclosed being sexually abused by her father with a knife. Results of her general and anogenital physical examinations were normal. The case discussion proposes an explanation for how a maltreated child (1) develops behavioral problems, (2) has a normal genital examination despite the history of sexual abuse, and (3) has an implausible disclosure of her father hurting

Sociocultural and psychological factors in American Indian drug use: implications for treatment.

Use of alcohol and other drugs has been acknowledged as a serious problem among American Indian populations. This study was designed to 1) compare female and male American Indian substance users in residential treatment on psychological (self-esteem, depression, attributional style) and sociocultural (demographics, personal drug use history, family history, acculturation) variables, and 2) examine relationships of the psychological and sociocultural variables with program completion. Results showed that females experienced more family dysfunction (family members misuse of substances, and emoti

Familial Influences on Recantation in Substantiated Child Sexual Abuse Cases.

The underlying reasons for recantation in children's disclosure of child sexual abuse (CSA) have been debated in recent years. In the present study, we examined the largest sample of substantiated CSA cases involving recantations to date (n = 58 cases). We specifically matched those cases to 58 nonrecanters on key variables found to predict recantation in prior research (i.e., child age, alleged parent figure perpetrator, and caregiver unsupportiveness). Bivariate analyses revealed that children were less likely to recant when they were (1) initially removed from home postdisclosure and (2) in

Placement in foster care enhances quality of attachment among young institutionalized children.

This study examined classifications of attachment in 42-month-old Romanian children (N = 169). Institutionalized since birth, children were assessed comprehensively, randomly assigned to care as usual (CAU) or to foster care, and compared to family-reared children. Attachment classifications for children in foster care were markedly different from those in the CAU. Importantly, children placed in foster care before 24 months were more likely to have secure attachments and if placed earlier were less likely to have disorganized or insecure-other attachments. Cognitive status predicted greater l

Progress and Prospects of Newborn Screening in China.

Newborn screening (NBS) is a critical component of the three-tiered prevention strategy for birth defects, reducing congenital disorder burden and improving long-term child health outcomes. Over the past 45 years, NBS in China has evolved into a nationwide quality-controlled network driven by policy support and technological advances. Currently, phenylketonuria and congenital hypothyroidism are included in universal NBS across the country, and several provinces have expanded to encompass congenital adrenal hyperplasia, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, and additional inherited meta

Childhood Maltreatment Disrupts Brain-Mediated Pathways Between Adolescent Maternal Relationship Quality and Positive Adult Outcomes.

The quality of early caregiving may partially shape brain structure and circuits involved in regulating emotions, including the frontal cortex, affecting vulnerability to the development of psychopathology and maladaptation. Given the profound impact of child maltreatment (CM) on psychological and neural development, we tested whether CM alters the pathways linking mother-adolescent relationship, frontal cortex, and adult outcomes. We used structural equation modeling to investigate whether CM history affected the association between mother-child relationship quality during early adolescence,

Pituitary Hyperplasia in a Female Patient with a Severe Childhood Abuse History.

A 24-year-old Caucasian female patient was referred to our endocrinology service to investigate a structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) finding of "pituitary mass". The first two sMRI were identified as pituitary adenoma but the following two examinations suggested the possibility of pituitary hyperplasia (PH). The patient was referred to our service for diagnostic clarification and therapy due to the divergence in sMRI reports and the surgical procedure indicated by the neurosurgical team of the other institution. The patient had no complaints, laboratory tests were all normal, and the

Baseline Characteristics of Dependent Youth Who Have Been Commercially Sexually Exploited: Findings From a Specialized Treatment Program.

Commercial sexual exploitation of children has emerged as a critical issue within child welfare, but little is currently known about this population or effective treatment approaches to address their unique needs. Children in foster care and runaways are reported to be vulnerable to exploitation because they frequently have unmet needs for family relationships, and they have had inadequate supervision and histories of trauma of which traffickers take advantage. The current article presents data on the demographic characteristics, trauma history, mental and behavioral health needs, physical hea
