Take TIME (Tobacco-free, Injury-free, Moving daily, Eating healthy) was an early intervention strategy targeting community readiness to support healthy lifestyles for young children in Uxbridge, Canada. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Take TIME using the Community Readiness Model adapted for childhood obesity prevention. Six interviews were completed in Uxbridge, before and after the intervention, with purposively selected community leaders in education, political, business, religious, not-for-profit, and healthcare fields. Each interview was rated independently by two scorers.

BACKGROUND: Low birthweight (<2500 g) is often used as a population-level indicator of maternal-child health, as it is easy to measure and correlates with poorer infant health outcomes. However, it conflates preterm birth and intrauterine growth restriction, which have different causal pathways and require different approaches to prevention. Small for gestational age (SGA) (a proxy for growth restriction) and preterm birth may be more informative measures. We evaluated low birthweight as a population-level indicator.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of singleton live birt…

OBJECTIVE: The immediate impact of child maltreatment on health and developmental trajectories over time is unknown. Longitudinal studies starting in the direct aftermath of exposure with repeated follow-up are needed.
METHOD: We assessed health and developmental outcomes in 6-month intervals over 2 years in 173 children, aged 3-5 years at study entry, including 86 children with exposure to emotional and physical abuse or neglect within 6 months and 87 nonmaltreated children. Assessments included clinician-administered, self- and parent-report measures of psychiatric and behavioral symptoms,

BACKGROUND: Some suspected child victims of physical or sexual abuse undergo dental forensic examinations at child advocacy centers (CACs) in Norway. Their oral health history has not previously been studied.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare oral health history of CAC children to matched children. Additionally, the oral health history of children exposed to sexual abuse was compared to children exposed to physical abuse.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The CAC cohort included 100 children, 3-16 years. The matched cohort, with no known history of abuse, included 63 children.
METHODS: The ret

Prior research has examined how late 1980s pregnancy-related Medicaid eligibility expansions influenced outcomes around the time of birth and, more recently, adult outcomes. We offer a close examination of early childhood effects to better understand the mechanism(s) underlying the improved longer-term outcomes. The restricted-access National Maternal and Infant Health Survey allows us to explore the effects of these expansions on maternal and child outcomes near the time of birth as well as three years post-birth. Our evidence suggests earlier connection with prenatal care and possible modest

BACKGROUND: Children are a vulnerable group affected by climate change. Paediatricians are important actors in protecting children from climate change-related health risks and in identifying and treating relevant health effects. The main objectives of this study were to determine how paediatricians assess the relevance of climate change-related health impacts, through which channels paediatricians can be reached most effectively, how often climate change-specific prevention measures are implemented and how they are assessed.
METHODS: Between February and July 2020, an online survey was conduc

BACKGROUND: Quality of care depends on system, facility, provider, and client-level factors. We aimed at examining structural and process quality of services for sick children and its association with client satisfaction at health facilities in Ethiopia.
METHODS: Data from the Ethiopia Service Provision Assessment Plus (SPA+) survey 2014 were used. Measures of quality were assessed based on the Donabedian framework: structure, process, and outcome. A total of 1908 mothers or caretakers were interviewed and their child consultations were observed. Principal component analysis was used to const

AIM: To develop a guideline for preventive child healthcare professionals in order to improve early detection of pathological disorders associated with short stature (or growth faltering) or tall stature (or accelerated growth).
METHODS: We updated the previous Dutch guideline for short stature in children aged 0-9 years and extended it to adolescents (10-17 years), and added a guideline for tall stature, based on literature and input from an expert committee. Specificities were calculated in a cohort of healthy Dutch children aged 0-9 years (n = 970). We investigated the impact of a late ons…

BACKGROUND: To analyse the impact of austerity measures taken by European governments as a response to the 2008 economic and financial crisis on social determinants on child health (SDCH), and child health outcomes (CHO).
METHODS: A systematic literature review was carried out in Medline (Ovid), Embase, Web of Science, PsycInfo, and Sociological abstracts in the last 5 years from European countries. Studies aimed at analysing the Great Recession, governments' responses to the crisis, and its impact on SDCH were included. A narrative synthesis of the results was carried out. The risk of bias w…

We examined the link between gestational biomarkers and breast cancer in 9169 daughters born into the Child Health and Development Studies from 1959 to 1967. We identified 137 breast cancer cases diagnosed by age 52 as of 2012. Markers of increased risk included higher placental volume and rapid 2nd trimester gestational weight gain. Protective markers were placental hemorrhage and fibrin deposition, indicators of resistance to placental trophoblast invasion. Paradoxically, higher ponderal index at birth was protective suggesting that fetal and placental pathways to breast cancer are multiple …

PURPOSE: We assess parent-child agreement regarding child's health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children operated for congenital glaucoma (CG).
METHODS: A total of 121 children aged 8 to 18 years (mean age, 11.8 years) operated for CG (mean duration since surgery, 10.2 years) and their parents (mean age, 36.5 years) completed the child and parent versions of the Kidscreen-27 questionnaire, respectively. Psychometric properties of Kidscreen-27 were assessed using Rasch analysis, and child-parent agreement regarding child's HRQoL was investigated using the Bland-Altman limits of agreement

CONTEXT: Although effective health and nutrition interventions for reducing child mortality and morbidity exist, direct evidence of effects on cognitive, motor, and psychosocial development is lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To review existing evidence for health and nutrition interventions affecting direct measures of (and pathways to) early child development.
DATA SOURCES: Reviews and recent overviews of interventions across the continuum of care and component studies.

Pro-marijuana advocacy efforts exemplified by the "medical" marijuana movement, coupled with the absence of conspicuous public health messages about the potential dangers of marijuana use during pregnancy, could lead to greater use of today's more potent marijuana, which could have significant short- and long-term consequences. This article reviews the current literature regarding the effects of prenatal marijuana use on the pregnant woman and her offspring.

Gaucher disease (GD) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the absence of glucosylceramidase. The accumulation of substrates of this enzyme in the cytoplasm of cells of the phagocytary system causes skeletal and hematologic disorders, and has oral repercussions. This report describes the findings of the oral cavity of an 8-year-old diagnosed with subtype I GD who has been receiving enzyme replacement therapy for the past 6 years without interruption. The report highlights that the child had none of the most common oral disease signs and symptoms, which demonstrates the importance
