Interactive augmented reality using Scratch 2.0 to improve physical activities for children with developmental disabilities.

This study uses a body motion interactive game developed in Scratch 2.0 to enhance the body strength of children with disabilities. Scratch 2.0, using an augmented-reality function on a program platform, creates real world and virtual reality displays at the same time. This study uses a webcam integration that tracks movements and allows participants to interact physically with the project, to enhance the motivation of children with developmental disabilities to perform physical activities. This study follows a single-case research using an ABAB structure, in which A is the baseline and B is t…

Using video self- and peer modeling to facilitate reading fluency in children with learning disabilities.

The authors compared the effects of video self-modeling and video peer modeling on oral reading fluency of elementary students with learning disabilities. A control group was also included to gauge general improvement due to reading instruction and familiarity with researchers. The results indicated that both interventions resulted in improved fluency. Students in both experimental groups improved their reading fluency. Two students in the self-modeling group made substantial and immediate gains beyond any of the other students. Discussion is included that focuses on the importance that positi

Neuropsychological differences among children with Asperger syndrome, nonverbal learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, and controls.

Confusion is present as to possible diagnostic differences between Asperger syndrome (AS) and Nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD) and the relation of these disorders to attentional difficulties. Three-hundred and forty-five children participated in this study in 5 groups; NLD, AS, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): Combined type, ADHD: Inattentive type, and controls. The NLD group showed particular difficulty on visual-spatial, visual-motor, and fluid reasoning measures compared to the other groups. There was also a significant verbal-performance IQ split in this group related

The influence of working memory on reading growth in subgroups of children with reading disabilities.

This 3-year longitudinal study determined whether (a) subgroups of children with reading disabilities (RD) (children with RD only, children with both reading and arithmetic deficits, and low verbal IQ readers) and skilled readers varied in working memory (WM) and short-term memory (STM) growth and (b) whether growth in an executive system and/or a phonological storage system mediated growth in reading performance. A battery of memory and reading measures was administered to 84 children (11-17 years of age) across three testing waves spaced 1 year apart. The results showed that skilled readers

Remedial interventions for children with reading disabilities: speech perception--an effective component in phonological training?

The effects of two types of phonological training in children with reading disabilities (RD) were examined. One of the programs (SP/LPA) trained children in speech discrimination, letter-sound correspondence, and phonemic awareness. The other program (LPA) trained children only in letter-sound correspondence and phonemic awareness. The effects of these programs were compared with a control group. Thirty-five children with RD were trained in small groups five times a week for 4 weeks. The results indicated that both experimental groups improved in phonemic awareness compared to the control grou

Rapid naming deficits in children and adolescents with reading disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Seventy-one children in three groups (reading disabilities, ADHD without reading disabilities, and normal controls) were compared on their ability to rapidly name colors, letters, numbers, and objects (RAN Tasks) and alternating letters/numbers and letters/numbers/colors (RAS tasks). Children with reading disabilities were found to be slower on letter- and number-naming tasks and made more errors on all tasks than controls or children with ADHD. There was an age effect for the RAN/RAS tasks, with younger children with reading disabilities performing more poorly on all tasks, while the older ch

Summer holiday respite provision for the families of children and young people with learning disabilities.

While the provision of respite care is a relatively recent development in the provision of services to families, it is an area of considerable growth and apparent importance. Most service development and research has focused on the provision of residential or family-based respite care though some studies have commented on the apparent demand for other kinds of relief. This study describes a pilot summer playscheme for children with learning disabilities and the reactions of mothers to its provision. The characteristics of families who used the scheme are described and their felt needs for addi

Early identification and treatment necessary to prevent malnutrition in children and adolescents with severe disabilities.

Children with severe developmental disabilities frequently have nutrition and growth problems that range from moderate to severe. Because of notable continuing medical concerns and lowered growth expectations, parents and physicians may fail to recognize gradual deterioration in nutritional status before severe medical complications occur. The two cases reported in this article illustrate the need for early identification and treatment to prevent the development of notable morbidity secondary to malnutrition. Children and adolescents who have growth parameters consistently below age norms requ

Intragroup differences and similarities in performance on rapid automatized naming tasks in children with ADHD symptoms, children with reading disabilities, and controls.

Introduction Rapid automatized naming (RAN) is the ability to name, as fast as possible, symbols such as letters, digits and figures. The present study aimed to investigate intragroup performance patterns on RAN tasks in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms alone, children with reading disability (RD) alone and controls with typical development. Methods A total of 216 Brazilian children between 8 to 11 years old were selected from public schools located in two Brazilian capitals, namely Porto Alegre and Belo Horizonte, to participate in the study. Stress pathways to harsh verbal discipline: Understanding parental distress in families of children with disabilities.

Parents raising children with disabilities often face substantial challenges, such as systemic barriers, unmet support needs, and social exclusion, that may elevate psychological distress and undermine parenting, yet longitudinal evidence on mechanisms linking disability-related caregiving contexts to harsh verbal discipline remains limited. Using data from the 2019-2021 U.S. Panel Study of Income Dynamics Child Development Supplement (N = 993 children aged 0-17 years and their primary caregivers), this study examined whether parental psychological distress mediates the association between chi…

Children with intellectual disabilities in a low-resource setting: a qualitative study of parents' perspectives.

UNLABELLED: Intellectual disability is a neurodevelopmental condition that substantially affects the lives of children worldwide. Despite increasing global recognition of intellectual disability, little is known about how children's daily lives unfold in low-resource settings. Therefore, this study is aimed at exploring the lived experiences of children with intellectual disabilities in Dessie City, Ethiopia, from the perspective of their parents. A qualitative study guided by a hermeneutic phenomenological design was employed. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with the parents, s
