Drug sensitivity of Salmonella typhi isolated from 25 blood culture positive cases of typhoid fever who presented between May and July 1990 was tested to determine their in vitro susceptibility to various antimicrobials. Twenty-one of them (84%) showed resistance to chloramphenicol and 24 (96%) to cotrimoxazole. All the 25 cases were sensitive to norfloxacin, gentamicin and cephalexin. A randomized clinical trial in sixty-two adult patients suffering from typhoid fever, proved by blood and marrow culture, showed that amoxycillin in a dosage schedule of 1 g 8-hourly orally for fourteen days was better than chloramphenicol with regard to clinical and temperature response and in respect of carriers and relapse rates. Thirty adults with proved typhoid fever were treated with amoxycillin 1 g six-hourly by mouth for an average of 14 days because of haematological contraindications to chloramphenicol.
