Effect of Light Conditions, Trichoderma Fungi and Food Polymers on Growth and Profile of Biologically Active Compounds in Thymus vulgaris and Thymus serpyllum.

The research investigates the influence of different lighting conditions and soil treatments, in particular the application of food polymers separately and in combination with spores of Trichoderma consortium, on the growth and development of herbs-Thymus vulgaris and Thymus serpyllum. The metabolic analysis focuses on detecting changes in the levels of biologically active compounds such as chlorophyll a and b, anthocyanins, carotenoids, phenolic compounds (including flavonoids), terpenoids, and volatile organic compounds with potential health-promoting properties. By investigating these facto…

Critical nutrient thresholds needed to control eutrophication and synergistic interactions between phosphorus and different nitrogen sources.

Eutrophication is one of the greatest threats to global freshwater ecosystems. The phytoplankton responses to nutrient inputs vary in differ … ient addition bioassay was designed to assess the synergistic interactions between these nutrients. Chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations were used to estimate phytoplankton biomass. The results showed the following: (1) nutrient threshold bioassay indicated that eutrophication thresholds of SRP, NO3-N, and NH4-N should be targeted at below 0.04 mg P L-1, 0.5 mg …

Detoxification and function of immature tomato.

α-Tomatine and chlorophyll (a and b) decreased, and β-carotene and lycopene increased with ripening of tomatoes. α-Tomatine was localised in peel of immature green tomatoes. The dose-response curve of α-tomatine determined by WST-1 (water soluble tetrazolium) assay was the same as that by LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) assay, suggesting that the cytotoxicity of α-tomatine depends on the destruction of plasma membrane. Immature green tomatoes had little cytotoxic effect after one month-incubation with 25% ethanol or 4.5% acetate at 7°C, and α-tomatine was decomposed by crude enzymes extracted from

Using the quantum yields of photosystem II and the rate of net photosynthesis to monitor high irradiance and temperature stress in chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora).

Under a dynamic greenhouse climate control regime, temperature is adjusted to optimise plant physiological responses to prevailing irradiance levels; thus, both temperature and irradiance are used by the plant to maximise the rate of photosynthesis, assuming other factors are not limiting. The control regime may be optimised by monitoring plant responses, and may be promptly adjusted when plant performance is affected by extreme microclimatic conditions, such as high irradiance or temperature. To determine the stress indicators of plants based on their physiological responses, net photosynthes

Direct and indirect effects of copper-contaminated sediments on the functions of model freshwater ecosystems.

Copper is acutely toxic to, and directly affects, primary producers and decomposers, which are key players in essential processes such as th … acrophyte growth, subsurface organic matter decomposition, and the potential for high phytoplankton Chlorophyll a concentrations. However, periphyton cover and organic matter decomposition on the surface of the sediment were stimulated by the presence of copper. These latter responses were attributed to indirect effects, due to a reduction in grazing pressure f …

Acclimation to future atmospheric CO2 levels increases photochemical efficiency and mitigates photochemistry inhibition by warm temperatures in wheat under field chambers.

A study was conducted over 2 years to determine whether growth under elevated CO(2) (700 μmol mol(-1) ) and temperature (ambient + 4 °C) con … t increased dark- (Fv:Fm) and light-adapted (Fv':Fm') photochemical efficiencies, and decreased the chlorophyll a:b ratio, suggesting an increase in light-harvesting complexes relative to PSII reaction centres. A relatively higher decrease in carbon assimilation than the decrease in Φ(PSII) pointed to a sink other than CO(2) assimilation for electron transport …

Species-specific interactions between algal endosymbionts and coral hosts define their bleaching response to heat and light stress.

The impacts of warming seas on the frequency and severity of bleaching events are well documented, but the potential for different Symbiodinium types to enhance the physiological tolerance of reef corals is not well understood. Here we compare the functionality and physiological properties of juvenile corals when experimentally infected with one of two homologous Symbiodinium types and exposed to combined heat and light stress. A suite of physiological indicators including chlorophyll a fluorescence, oxygen production and respiration, as well as pigment concentration consistently demonstrated …

The role of ultraviolet-adaptation of a marine diatom in photoenhanced toxicity of acridine.

Cultures of the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum were grown under laboratory light with a different fraction of ultraviolet radiation (UV) to study the potential role of photoadaptation in determining the sensitivity to photoenhanced toxicity of acridine. In short-term experiments, a higher acridine concentration was needed to inhibit the photosynthetic electron flux, monitored with chlorophyll a fluorescence, in algae exposed to fluorescent light (low UV) than to mercury light (high UV), consistent with the expected role of UV. The two types of light in long-term exposures led to chang…

Molecular insights into the mechanisms of a leaf color mutant in Anoectochilus roxburghii by gene mapping and transcriptome profiling based on PacBio Sequel II.

Plants with partial or complete loss of chlorophylls and other pigments are frequently occurring in nature but not commonly found. In the present study, we characterize a leaf color mutant 'arly01' with an albino stripe in the middle of the leaf, which is an uncommon ornamental trait in Anoectochilus roxburghii. The albino "mutant" middle portion and green "normal" leaf parts were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and their pigment contents were determined. The mutant portion exhibited underdevelopment of plastids and had reduced chlorophyll and other pigment (carotenoid, ant…

The miR396-GRFs Module Mediates the Prevention of Photo-oxidative Damage by Brassinosteroids during Seedling De-Etiolation in Arabidopsis.

The switch from dark- to light-mediated development is critical for the survival and growth of seedlings, but the underlying regulatory mechanisms are incomplete. Here, we show that the steroids phytohormone brassinosteroids play crucial roles during this developmental transition by regulating chlorophyll biosynthesis to promote greening of etiolated seedlings upon light exposure. Etiolated seedlings of the brassinosteroids-deficient det2-1 (de-etiolated2) mutant accumulated excess protochlorophyllide, resulting in photo-oxidative damage upon exposure to light. Conversely, the gain-of-function

Light sheet microscopy reveals more gradual light attenuation in light-green versus dark-green soybean leaves.

Nitric oxide improves S-assimilation and GSH production to prevent inhibitory effects of cadmium stress on photosynthesis in mustard (Brassica juncea L.).

Nitric oxide (NO) is an important gaseous signalling molecule that participates in many developmental and physiological processes, including defense responses against toxic metals in plants. The role of NO in cadmium (Cd)-induced toxic effects on photosynthesis was examined in mustard (Brassica juncea L.) plants. Exposure of plants to 50 μM Cd significantly enhanced oxidative stress (H2O2 content and lipid peroxidation) and impaired plant growth and photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence and reduced chlorophyll content and stomatal conductance. However, the exogenous application of 100 μM so

Pre-anthesis light signaling of sheathed developing barley inflorescences defines floral fate.

Pre-anthesis inflorescence greening (PAIG) is a distinctive developmental feature in members of the Triticeae such as barley, wheat, and rye. In barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), floral survival and fertility are major determinants of grain yield, yet the physiological processes supporting early inflorescence development remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated PAIG, a light-dependent chlorophyll accumulation occurring while immature inflorescences are still enclosed by leaf sheaths, and its role in overall inflorescence development. Using chlorophyll autofluorescence imaging and chlorophyll…

Application of Simultaneous Active and Passive Fluorescence Observations: Extending a Fluorescence-Based qL Estimation Model.

The fraction of open Photosystem II (PSII) reaction centers (qL) is critical for connecting broadband PSII fluorescence (ChlFPSII) with the actual electron transport from PSII to Photosystem I. Accurately estimating qL is fundamental for determining ChlFPSII, which, in turn, is vital for mechanistically estimating the actual electron transport rate and photosynthetic CO2 assimilation. Chlorophyll fluorescence provides direct physiological insights, offering a robust foundation for qL estimation. However, uncertainties in the ChlFPSII-qL relationship across different plant functional types (PFT
