Quality of life (GIQLI) and laparoscopic cholecystectomy usefulness in patients with gallbladder dysfunction or chronic non-lithiasic biliary pain (chronic acalculous cholecystitis).

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence, clinical features and role of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) in patients … t that cholecistogammagraphy is a technique not available in daily clinical practice, and that oral cholecystography and dynamic ultrasound are reliable when a positive result is obtained, extended clinical evaluation is still the most reliable indicator for cholecystectomy.

Successful topical dissolution of cholesterol gallbladder stones using ethyl propionate.

Topical dissolution of cholesterol gallbladder stones using methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is useful in symptomatic patients judged too ill … er electively. Gallstone dissolution was assessed by chromatography, by gravimetry, and by catheter cholecystography. Total dissolution of gallstones was obtained in four patients after 6-10 hr of lavage; in the fifth patient, partial gallstone dissolution facilitated basketing of the stones. In two patients, cholesterol dissolution was measured and averaged 30 mg …

Prevalence of gallbladder disease and associated clinical variables in a low income population of Mexico City.

We present the results of a population-based survey carried out in a low income area of Mexico City. The aim of this study is to characterize the prevalence of clinically significant gallbladder disease (CSGD) using the self-reported history of cholecystectomy (CG) or cholelithiasis (CL) demonstrated by cholecystography and/or ultrasonography. The population of the studied area was 15,532 inhabitants, of whom 3505 (22.6%) were age eligible (35-64 year-old men and non-pregnant women). Home interviews were obtained in 2810 (80.2%). A physical and laboratory examination was performed in 2282 indi…

[Common channel for bile and pancreatic ducts. Presentation of 12 cases and discussion].

Between 1978 and 1985, 11 girls and one boy underwent an elective operation for a congenital choledochal dilatation associated with an anomalous biliopancreatic junction. In 10 out of these 12 cases the children suffered several episodes of abdominal pain, and the diagnosis was missed since a jaundice appeared. The ultrasonographic examination demonstrated in all cases a dilatation of both extra- and intrahepatic bile ducts. The preoperative diagnosis was always established by the mean of a transhepatic cholangiography (8 cases) or a percutaneous cholecystography (4 cases), which showed in eve…

The place of hepatobiliary isotope scanning in the diagnosis of gallbladder disease.

The present trend towards a more aggressive operative policy in acute cholecystitis has led to a search for more accurate methods of diagnos … ominal pain. It may also be helpful in confirming pathology in a nonfunctioning gallbladder on oral cholecystography. When the isotope scan is negative (normal) contrast radiology is still required to exclude cholelithiasis. By a combination of the two techniques the correct diagnosis was arrived at in each of the 99 patients studied, suggesting that the methods m …

Hepatobiliary imaging: a comparison of 99Tcm-dihydrothioctic acid and 99Tcm-pyridoxylidene glutamate in the non-jaundiced patient.

A comparison of two hepatobiliary imaging agents, 99Tcm-dihydrothioctic acid (99Tcm-DHT) and (99Tcm-pyridoxylidene glutamate (99Tcm-PG) has … e to acute cholecystitis. Despite this, there was agreement between the results of imaging and oral cholecystography in 21 out of 22 subjects. 99Tcm-PG is non-toxic, cheap and rapidly excreted by the liver into the bile. A 99Tcm-PG scan would be useful when rapid diagnosis is required in suspected acute cholecystitis when conventional contrast radiology is unlikel …

Optical biopsy in human pancreatobiliary tissue using optical coherence tomography.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new technique for performing high-resolution, cross-sectional tomographic imaging in human tissue. OCT is analogous to ultrasound B mode imaging except that it uses light rather than acoustical waves. As a result, OCT has over 10 times the resolution of currently available clinical high-resolution cross-sectional imaging technologies. In this work, we investigate the capability of OCT to differentiate the architectural morphology of pancreatobiliary tissues. Normal pancreatobiliary tissues, including the gallbladder, common bile duct, pancreatic duct, an

Vicarious excretion of intravenous diatrizoate (Urograffin) in renal insufficiency: report of two cases.

Two cases of hepato-biliary excretion of intravenous sodium and meglumine diatrizoate (Urograffin 76%) are presented. One of these patients showed specification of of the gallbladder and colon while in the other case only the gallbladder was specified. In both cases there was marked deterioration of renal function. A brief review of the literature on hepatobiliary excretion of intravenous sodium and meglumine diatrizoate is given.

[Symptoms, signs and therapy of the septate gallbladder (author's transl)].

The septate gallbladder probably represents a congenital anomaly of form, that can be proven by X-ray in 3,8% of hospitalized patients. Only in 25% of these cases it has an own symptomatic significance. Here it does lead though, more or less distinctly, to the typical painful discomfort, comparable to the cholelithiasis, especially augmented by dietary sins, up to the state of colics. The symptoms intensify during the clinical course. Because the gallbladder remains in most cases without the finding of concrements, the misjudgement in these cases often leads to an unnecessary prolongation of t

Irrigation removal of retained gallstone following cholecystostomy.

A case is presented in which a patient, treated for acute cholecystitis by cholesystostomy, has a retained gallbladder stone removed by saline irrigation. A brief discussion is given on the indication for cholecystostomy and its use as definitive versus temporizing therapy. In performing cholecystostomy, a catheter of diameter equal to or greater than the diameter of any stone which may be left is recommended.
