Osteochondroma is a common benign tumor of the axial skeleton, especially in the distal metaphysis of the femur and the proximal metaphysis of the tibia, that can occur on the facial skeleton (albeit rarely). Osteochondroma is differentiated from chondroma, osteochondromatosis and osteoma. Osteochondroma shows an irregular radiopaque lesion and chondromatic area surrounded by the osteoma. When it develops in the long bone, it has a marked tendency to occur at 10 to 20 years of age and ceases with the end of pubertal growth. However, when it develops in the mandibular condyle, it is prevalent i…

Enchondroma is a benign growth of cartilage arising in the bone metaphysis as a solitary or multiple primary lesions. The form of multiple enchondromatosis with unilateral predominance is termed Ollier's disease. We have recently treated a case of Ollier's disease with the chief complaint of deformity of the left hand. The patient was an 11-year-old boy. Radiographic examination showed honeycombed clear spaces in the metaphyses of the middle and proximal phalanges of the left ring and little fingers as well as of the fourth and fifth metacarpals, and thinning of the cortex of these bones, but …

BACKGROUND: The radiographic presentation of the primary intraosseous cavernous hemangiomas (PICHs) is nonspecific. We report a case of cliv … ted images, respectively. The lesion was larger than on MRI performed 10 years earlier. Chordoma or chondroma was considered a possible preoperative diagnosis. An endoscopic transsphenoidal approach removed the tumor. In the operating view, the lesion appeared as "moth-eaten" bony interstices filled with vascular soft tissue. Histologically, an intraosseous …

PURPOSE: Primary intraosseous haemangioma (IOH) is a rare benign neoplasm presenting in the fourth and fifth decades of life. The spine and … tal region is rare; in the absence of typical imaging features, the differential diagnosis includes chondroma, chondrosarcoma, bony metastasis, and lymphoma. Surgical excision may be necessary to exclude more sinister pathology. Intraoperative haemorrhage can be severe and may be reduced by preoperative embolisation.

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare, benign metaphyseal bone tumour characterised by a combination of chondroid, myxoid, and fibrous elements. It can affect any bone at any age, with no gender predilection. We report a case of CMF in a 47-year-old female patient who presented with swelling of the left little finger at a tertiary care hospital in Kolkata, India, in 2024. Imaging revealed a lobulated lesion originating from the middle phalanx of the left little finger, extending to involve the base of the distal phalanx. Fine needle aspiration cytology indicated a moderately cellular myxoid le

BACKGROUND: Enchondromas are the most common primary bone tumors of the hand and are benign cartilaginous tumors. This study evaluated the clinical and radiologic results of patients who underwent surgical interventions for isolated hand enchondromas with a minimum follow-up of 1 year and focused on controversial issues.
METHODS: A retrospective study included 66 patients with solitary hand enchondromas with follow-up >12 months who underwent surgical interventions between January 2014 and July 2020. Patients with multiple enchondromas, low-grade chondrosarcoma, or who missed follow-up were e…

Enchondroma, the most frequently reported primary tumor in the long bones of the hand, is a common benign cartilaginous tumor, defined more exactly as a benign mature hyaline cartilaginous tumor that is located into the medullar space of the tubular bones. Between 2012 and 2018, we performed an observational study on six patients (two males and four females), aged 16 to 49 years old (mean 29.5 years), who were diagnosed during routine physical examinations with isolated enchondroma in their hand. The tumor was more frequently located in their proximal phalanges (four patients), while two patie…

Enchondroma is the most common primary bone tumor of the hand. This benign, cartilaginous tumor often presents as a pathologic fracture. When hand enchondroma is suspected, less common conditions, such as multiple enchondromatosis syndromes and benign and malignant lesions, should be ruled out. Surgical management with curettage is the standard of care for symptomatic lesions. However, controversy surrounds the timing of surgery for pathologic fractures and the use of surgical adjuncts and postcurettage void management. Microscopically distinguishing hand enchondroma from low-grade hand chondr…

BACKGROUND: An enchondroma is with up to 90% the most common benign tumour of the hand. Functional long-term outcome studies of the several treatments do not exist. The aim of this study is thus to evaluate the information from our 147 patients about diagnostics, operative treatment and follow-up treatment.
METHODS: 147 patients with 183 histologically secured enchondromas of the hand, who had been treated between 1973 and 2004, were analysed by follow-up examination and radiological findings retrospectively.
RESULTS: We found 136 mono- and 11 polyostotic lesions. The proximal phalanx was af…

In this study, a total of 1434 benign bone tumors and 384 tumor-like bone lesions that have been diagnosed from 1945 until 1974 in the Institute of Pathology of the University of Freiburg was reviewed and statistically analysed. The most frequent tumors include 720 osteochondromas, 345 enchondromas and 93 osteomas (80.8%). The remainder of 276 cases included several tumorous bone lesions with an individual share of below 5%. Our 64 osteoclastomas (4.5%) are in reality tumors of low grade of malignancy. There was an equal distribution among both sexes (737 male, 695 female). Predominate locatio…

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1988eng
In selected cases, we present the arthroscopic surgery of the hip joint as an alternative to the conventional arthrotomy. It is distinguished by less surgery, minimal invasive exploration, and slight traumatization. Also, it comprises a short morbidity, and thereby, the method reduces the costs. If the operation succeeds, the patient and the surgeon are both enthusiastic.

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare condition in which osteocartilaginous nodules are formed by synovial metaplasia and become intra-articular loose bodies. It is usually monarticular, most commonly affecting the knee and is regarded as invariably benign. There are reports of malignant change, but only the two case studies of Mullins, Berard and Eisenberg (1965) and of Dunn et al. (1974) fully document the development of chondrosarcoma in this condition. We report a patient with a long history of histologically proven synovial chondromatosis in whom the condition became clinically aggressive and…

Under the general heading of articular osteochondromatosis, there is particular interest in those cases where the synovial change generates small cartilaginous bodies. These exhibit little or no calcification and are found both in the articular cavity and within the synovial tissue. This suggests a pathogenesis in which the disease evolves from a micronodular form into a macronodular chondromatosis of various sizes. These considerations also raise the possibility of regression of the process in its microchondromatosic form towards normalization of the synovial membrane.

A case of Maffucci's syndrome with cutaneous, bony and neurological complications is reported. The patient had lymphangiomatosis at birth and developed multiple cutaneous haemangiomas and osteochondromas during childhood. She also developed multiple neurological defects, including cranial nerve palsies due to an intracranial osteochondroma. The occurence of mesodermal dysplasias and neoplasias in the Maffucci syndrome is emphasized, and it is suggested that there is a close relationship between this disorder and Ollier's disease (multiple enchondromatosis).
