Trophectoderm grade as a predictor of beta human-chorionic gonadotropin rise in early pregnancy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the association, if any, between the grade of the trophectoderm (TE) and the rate at which β-human-chorionic gonadotropin (β-HCG) rises in early pregnancy. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study including 1116 singleton clinical pregnancies resulting from in vitro fertilization with single day 5 blastocyst transfer at an academic fertility center. TE quality was assessed by trained embryologists employing standard criteria. Three groups were formed based on the TE grade: grade A (n = 358), grade B (n = 628), and grade C (n = 130). Main outcome measure was the rise …

Evaluation of a New Model for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Rise in Pregnancies of Unknown Viability.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of a new human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) threshold model to classify pregnancies as viable or nonviable using a longitudinal cohort of individuals with pregnancy of unknown viability. The secondary objective was to compare the new model with three established models. METHODS: This is a single-center, retrospective cohort study of individuals seen at the University of Missouri from January 1, 2015, until March 1, 2020, who had at least two consecutive quantitative hCG serum levels with an initial level greater than 2 milli-international units/mL and 5,…

Impact of molecular genotyping on the diagnosis and treatment of human chorionic gonadotropin-producing tumors.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the use of molecular genotyping to accurately diagnose and treat human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)-producing tumors and to evaluate the discriminating capacity of molecular testing on prognosis and overall survival. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective descriptive study of patients registered with the French Reference Center for Trophoblastic Disease between 1999 and 2021. We included all patients with hCG-producing tumors for whom results of molecular genotyping were available. RESULTS: Fifty-five patients with molecular genotyping were included: 81.2 % (n = 45) had …

[Effects of estradiol on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin administration on adverse perinatal outcomes].

Objective: To investigate the association between estradiol on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) administration and birth outcomes among singleton live births following fresh embryo transfers. Methods: Based on the clinical reproduction medicine management system of the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, this retrospective cohort study collected data of fresh embryo transfer cycles during January 2013 and December 2016, including pregnant women's age, body mass index (BMI), type and cause of infertility, assisted reproductive therapy indicators (fertilization …

The diagnostic value of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin, progesterone, CA125 in the prediction of abortions.

This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of serum levels of free beta-hCG, progesterone, CA125 and their combined use in the prediction of first trimester abortions. A total of 140 singleton pregnant women between 5 and 13 weeks' gestational age were included as Group I (n = 21) who resulted in abortion including missed abortion, incomplete abortion, complete abortion and inevitable abortion; Group II (n = 129) included normal pregnancies. When using the free beta-hCG level of <20 ng/ml as a cut off point, the sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV were 91%, 82%, 46% and 98%, w

The use of serial human chorionic gonadotropin levels to establish a viable or a nonviable pregnancy.

Measurement of serial human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) concentrations facilitates the diagnosis of normal or abnormal early gestation, as deviations from expected rates of rise or decline prompt intervention and/or treatment of abnormal pregnancies. Recently, the expected rise in hCG levels for normal intrauterine pregnancies (IUPs) was well characterized, and based on a 95% confidence interval, it was determined that the slowest rise in a normal IUP was 53% in 2 days. When the hCG level is decreasing, it is clear that the pregnancy is not viable. The management of such cases consists of obs…

[Immune response to equine Chorionic Gonadotropin used for the induction of ovulation in goats and ewes].

In dairy goats and ewes the use of equine Chorionic Gonadotropin (eCG) as a convenient hormone for the induction of ovulation is necessary for out-of-season breeding and artificial insemination (AI). Treatment for induction and synchronization of ovulation consists of a progestagen delivered by vaginal sponge, followed by an eCG injection. In some females, the first injection of eCG induces a humoral response with high concentrations of anti-eCG antibodies in contrast to other females displaying a very low concentration of anti-eCG antibodies. Females eliciting a low response were also poor re…

Increased concentration of the free beta-subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin in hyperemesis gravidarum.

OBJECTIVE: The amount of free beta subunit hCG (free beta) has been reported to be increased in trophoblast disease and Down's syndrome, conditions also associated with high total hCG. Increased total hCG has been reported in hyperemesis gravidarum. We sought to determine if sera from singleton gestations with hyperemesis gravidarum contained a higher proportion of free beta hCG compared to controls of comparable gestational age. METHODS: Sera from 39 patients with hyperemesis gravidarum was compared with that from 23 control subjects of comparable gestational age with respect to beta hCG and

Gynecomastia and ectopic human chorionic gonadotropin production by transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder.

We report a patient with gynecomastia and ectopic production of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) by a transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. In the present case, serum HCG levels and gynecomastia paralleled the clinical course. On admission, the patient was suffering from invasive transitional cell carcinoma (grade 3) of the bladder with metastasis to the left inguinal lymph nodes, together with gynecomastia. The serum HCG level was also elevated. After anticancer chemotherapy, the apparent bladder lesion and gynecomastia disappeared, and the serum HCG level declined to within normal li…

Production of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin by germ cell tumors in vivo and in vitro.

Production of the beta-subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG) by human germ cell tumors was studied in surgical specimens, cultured cells and xenografted tumors. beta-hCG was identified most frequently in the syncytiotrophoblastic and intermediate trophoblastic components of choriocarcinoma, and it was also detected in syncytiotrophoblastic giant cells, occasionally in association with embryonal carcinoma, and less frequently with yolk sac tumor, seminoma and dysgerminoma. Our experimental data suggest that beta-hCG production by syncytiotrophoblastic giant cells in association wit…

Three injections of human chorionic gonadotropin are as effective as ten injections in the treatment of cryptorchidism.

Two schedules of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration were compared in a study of 332 boys (473 testes) aged 1-13 years with cryptorchidism. One group of patients received 10 hCG injections according to the International Health Foundation (IHF) schedule while the other group received 3 hCG injections at intervals of 7-10 days (1-3 years = 3 x 1,000 IU; 3-6 years = 3 x 1,500 IU; 6-10 years = 3 x 3,000 IU; 10-13 years = 3 x 5,000 IU hCG). Results from both schedules were comparable during the first and also during a second treatment period at the age of 1-3 and 3-6 years; between 6 …

Use of synthetic peptides as immunogens for developing a vaccine against human chorionic gonadotropin.

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the placental trophoblast soon after conception and is essential for successful gestation in women. A vaccine against this hormone has been developed for the purposes of birth control and the treatment of hormone-related diseases. Synthetic peptides representing the native primary structure of the hCG beta subunit have been coupled to protein carriers to produce immunogens. Several peptides, representing varying lengths from the C-terminus of the beta subunit, were synthesized and their ability to elicit antibodies reacti…
