OBJECTIVE: To investigate subclinical choroidal involvement in patients with systemic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and evaluate its long-term course.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective, longitudinal study included 32 eyes of 16 COVID-19 patients and 34 eyes of 17 age-matched healthy control subjects. All the participants had a detailed ophthalmologic assessment, including visual acuity assessment, slit-lamp examination, and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Enhanced depth optical coherence tomography imaging of the posterior pole and peripapillary region was performed in the earl…

PURPOSE: To present a distinctive case of primary choroidal lymphoma diagnosed by choroidal biopsy with myeloid differentiation primary response 88 testing.
METHODS: We describe the case of a 55-year-old man with unilateral progressive blurry vision. Fundus examination found a whitish/yellowish infiltrative lesion in the posterior pole with macular edema, which had interval improvement with oral prednisone, followed by worsening on optical coherence tomography with persistent subretinal hyper-reflective materials.
RESULTS: Because the initial pars plana vitrectomy/vitreous biopsy and choroid…

The choroid is a thin layer of highly vascular uveal tissue enclosed externally by sclera and internally by neurosensory retinal tissue. The choroid is a "middle layer" ocular tissue with anatomically challenging surgical access. The primary functional role of the choroid is to provide rapid, oxygenated, and nutrient-rich blood flow to both the highly metabolic retinal pigment epithelium and outer retina (i.e. photoreceptors) while simultaneously removing waste products. Historically, incisional choroidal surgery (ICS) has involved tumor biopsy or excision, removal of choroidal neovascular com…

The structure and functions of the choroid have been long acknowledged but the pathophysiology behind various anomalies has been difficult to understand until the advent of optical coherence tomography (OCT). With OCT imaging, choroidal cavitations appear as optically empty spaces between the outer retinal and choroidal layers with attenuation or loss of outer retinal layers. Choroidal cavitations are found in the posterior pole and seen in conditions such as pathologic myopia, north carolina macular dystrophy (NCMD), focal choroidal excavation (FCE), and torpedo maculopathy (TM). To date, the…

Serpiginous choroiditis (SC) is an asymmetrically bilateral inflammation of the choroid that leads to loss of choriocapillaris atrophy or loss of overlying retinal pigment epithelium. Over the last few decades, SC has passed through a long evolution of nomenclature, etiologies and morphological variations. Initially diagnosed in patients with tuberculosis and syphilis, SC was predominantly considered as autoimmune process. With the advancement of molecular diagnosis, a new aspect of infectious subtypes of SC has emerged out. The terminologies such as serpiginous-like choroiditis (SLC) and mult…

A 34-year-old female a known scleroderma patient presented to us with ocular manifestations in the form choroiditis along with optic nerve involvement. Blood investigations were done, and the ocular findings were confirmed by fundus fluorescein angiography. She was successfully managed with systemic steroid therapy. Among the protean ocular manifestations in scleroderma, only a few cases of choroidal involvement have been reported. Further, clinical and histopathological studies may be needed to throw light on the exact etiopathogenesis.

Choroidal osteomas are rare benign ossifying tumors that appear as irregular slightly elevated, yellow-white, juxtapapillary, choroidal mass with well-defined geographic borders, depigmentation of the overlying pigment epithelium; and with multiple small vascular networks on the tumor surface. Visual loss results from three mechanisms: Atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium overlying a decalcified osteoma; serous retinal detachment over the osteoma from decompensated retinal pigment epithelium, and most commonly from choroidal neovascularization. Recent evidence points to the beneficial eff…

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the elderly in industrialized countries. The "wet" AMD, characterized by the development of choroidal neovacularization (CNV), could result in rapid and severe loss of central vision. The critical role of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) in CNV development has been established and VEGF-A neutralization has become the standard care for wet AMD. Recently, CCR3 was reported to play an important role in CNV development and that CCR3 targeting was reported to be superior to VEGF-A targeting in CNV …

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, relapsing and remitting autoimmune disease of unknown etiology. As in other rheumatic disea … ickering scotoma but good visual acuity. Funduscopy and fluorescence angiography revealed bilateral choroidal vessel occlusions. Additionally, a hemorrhagic choroidal infarction and a preretinal hemorrhage were detected in the right eye. In summary SLE can result in choroidal vasoocclusion especially if decompensated arterial hypertension is present.

Solitary idiopathic choroiditis (SIC) is often confused with intraocular masses and inflammatory conditions and has only recently been identified as a distinct clinical condition. Jerry Shields, M.D., was the first to put a name on this condition. The clinical findings and features that distinguish it from other conditions are discussed in this report. A comprehensive examination with supplemental testing such as fluoresceine angiography, B scan, and extensive laboratory workup is necessary to rule out the differentials of SIC. These differentials include inflammatory conditions and retinal an…
