This ecumenical White Paper aims to clarify the profile of Christian healthcare chaplaincy in a context of rapidly changing healthcare systems. The increasing complexity and specialization of healthcare, the shift towards outpatient care, mounting economic pressures, the demographic and epidemiological transitions towards chronic and elderly care, and global health crises are profoundly transforming and challenging Christian healthcare chaplaincy. At the same time, the societal context of healthcare chaplaincy is also changing rapidly. While church resources and influence are declining, spirit

Weber-Christian Disease (WCD), or relapsing febrile nodular panniculitis is a rare form of subcutaneous fat inflammation commonly affecting women aged 40-75 years old. It is rarer in children with only 1 previously reported case in the Philippines. It presents as erythematous nodules, frequently affecting the lower extremities. There is no standard treatment, but reportedly improves with steroid therapy, cyclosporine, and immunomodulators. This is a case of a 12-year-old-female, who presented with a 4-month history of palpable facial nodules, thigh pains, and recurrent fever. Work-up for hyper

Voluntary donation is the ethically acceptable method for whole-body acquisition for anatomy education worldwide. In Africa, educational institutions struggle with this since many people remain unwilling to donate their bodies due to the strong influence of cultural and religious beliefs in decision-making. As part of wider efforts to improve the ethical sourcing of bodies in Zimbabwean medical schools, which are heavily reliant on unclaimed bodies, this study sought to determine the influences traditional and religious beliefs have on such decisions. We ascertained traditional and religious l

Substance use disorders have significant consequences for patients and those around them. A qualitative systematic review was conducted to examine the effectiveness of religiosity and spirituality (R/S) interventions based on Judeo-Christian principles during the multidisciplinary treatment of patients with substance dependence disorder. Studies of patients of both sexes, at any age, of any nationality, and from any geographic location who were participating in treatment programs with religious elements explicitly tied to Christianity or Judaism were eligible for inclusion. Other religious int…

Inflammatory conditions manifest with a broad spectrum of signs and symptoms. Panniculitis is such a condition affecting the subcutaneous fat and presents as tender erythematous nodules. It is also associated with a systemic response and has been described in the literature as early as in 1892 by Pfeifer and in the 1920s by Weber and Christian. We present an unusual case of a Caucasian man with recurrent febrile illness, systemic inflammatory response and renal dysfunction requiring acute high dependency care. The authors successfully treated him with an antiproliferative agent, mycophenolate

Studies on disordered eating behaviors (DEB) in multicultural populations with multiple religious/cultural affiliations are needed in order to clarify the relationship between cultural background and DEB. Therefore, we compared the presence of DEB among Christian and Muslim adolescents who share their school environment, controlling for the effect of body mass index, demographic variables and lifestyle habits. A sample of 493 girls and boys (339 Christian, 138 Muslim) whose mean (±SD) age was 14.8 (±1.7) years completed self-reporting questionnaires and underwent measurements of anthropometric

Partial or total therapeutic sleep deprivation leads to an immediate and far-reaching release of depressive symptoms in about 60% of patients with depressive disturbances. It is for that reason that this therapeutic option is offered and studied in many psychiatric clinics. Several papers have acclaimed the German psychiatrist Johann Christian August Heinroth (1773-1843) - the first university professor of psychiatry--as a pioneer of this therapeutic approach. However, no reference has been made specifying where in his comprehensive oeuvre he promoted this notion, nor has any analysis of the t

Introduction The fossa of Rosenmüller, also known as the lateral pharyngeal recess, is a well-established site of origin of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. It is located in the lateral pharyngeal wall behind the cartilaginous portion of the Eustachian tube, the torus tubarius, and is named after Johann Christian Rosenmüller (JCR). Objective We present a history on the life and extensive works of Johann Christian Rosenmüller, a German physician and anatomist. Results Johann Christian Rosenmüller was a dedicated anatomist. In addition to identifying the fossa of Rosenmüller, his influence extends to v

BACKGROUND: Pfeifer-Weber-Christian disease (PWCD) is a rare inflammatory disorder of the subcutaneous fatty tissue. The diagnosis and therapy of this rare type of panniculitis is still controversial and will be discussed in this article.
CASE PRESENTATION: We here report the rare case of a 64-year old male patient, with PWCD. The patient suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for several years, but then developed relapsing fever and recently occurring painful subcutaneous nodules predominantly at the inner part of his left upper limb with no signs of synovitis. Finally, a biopsy from one of the

A 22-year-old male patient with Weber-Christian disease (WCD) presenting with periorbital swelling is a very rare occurrence. Lobular panniculitis in the periorbital and anterior tibial skin was diagnosed in this patient, based on the histological findings from biopsy specimens. The differential diagnosis was done before administering systemic corticosteroid. A dramatic response was achieved several days later, but relapse with intractable fever occurred 1 month later. The use of other immunosuppressive agents failed, and he died of septic shock 2 months later. The preceding infection may have

A 58-year-old female, who had suffered from Weber-Christian disease for 26 years, presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage. Cerebral angiography showed dilatation of the basilar tip. An operation was performed in the chronic stage. The wall of dilated basilar artery was tough, but that of the right superior cerebellar artery was very thin and three small aneurysms were found on the right middle cerebral artery. Blood levels of fibrin degradation products, plasmin-alpha 2-plasmin inhibitor complex, and thrombin-antithrombin III complex were increased. The abnormality of the coagulation-fibrinolys
