While soybean meal (SBM) is a cost-effective protein source for Nile tilapia, its anti-nutritional factors require dietary interventions such as the supplementation of organic acid salts to maintain health and gut functions. Therefore, this study evaluated the dietary effects of organic acid salts as sodium propionate (PR), sodium butyrate (BT), and their mixture (PR + BT) on the growth, digestive enzymes, hepatic antioxidant responses and intestinal histomorphology of Nile tilapia fed a high SBM diet. Fingerlings (average initial weight ~ 19.65 ± 0.1 g) were assigned to five triplicate diets

Pesticides can bioaccumulate in fish tissues, and there are serious concerns around the world about their effects on consumer health. The objective of this study was to highlight the effects of two commercial pesticides, ethoprophos and bispyribac-sodium, commonly used on high-consumption crops in Egypt, either individually or in mixture, on some biomarkers of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, an important commercial fish species. Low concentrations of ethoprophos (96 µg/L) and bispyribac-sodium (1.28 µg/L) were selected to evaluate the effect of these substances on neurotoxic marker (acety

Aquaculture has become a global major economic sector that requires constant innovation. One of the main problems facing aquaculture systems is infectious disorders, particularly bacterial diseases, which reduce aquaculture's viability and cause significant economic losses. Fish mostly use innate or non-specific immunity to protect themselves from different microbial infections. Of the numerous Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs), Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are the earliest and best-characterized innate immune receptors. In the current study, the immunohistochemical expression patterns of TLR

Microplastics (MPs; less than 5 mm in size) are becoming increasingly prevalent in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. As these particles enter the food chain, they have the potential to pose significant risks to human health. However, their effects on vital fish tissues, such as skeletal muscle, are not yet fully understood. In this study, we examined Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) from two distinct sites on the Nile River in Egypt: the Nile branch (Damietta branch) and Riah El-Towfiqi. Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and histological study, we confirmed the pr

The objective of this study was to detect the effects of acute aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) exposure in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and the effectiveness of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and silicate in reducing these effects. Two hundred and forty Nile tilapia fingerlings (16 ± 0.5 g) were randomly assigned to four experimental groups, each with 60 fish and three replicates. Control basal diet (Diet 1) and three test diets were formulated, where Diet 2 was supplemented with 200 ppb AFB1. Diets 3 and 4 were intoxicated with AFB1 (200 ppb) and supplemented with 0.5% S. cerevisiae or 0.5%, respective

Bacterial illness causes detrimental impacts on fish health and survival and finally economic losses for the aquaculture industry. Antibiotic medication causes microbial resistance, so alternative control strategies should be applied. In this work, we investigated the probiotic-medicated diet as an alternative control approach for antibiotics in treating Vibrio cholerae infection in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). One hundred eighty fish (50 ± 2.5 g Mean ± SD) were allocated into six groups in glass aquariums (96 L) in triplicate for 10 days. Groups 1 (G1), G2, and G 3 were intraperitone

The bioaccumulation of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) by housefly maggots (HM) during the conversion of food waste (vegetables and meat (VM) and rice waste) under various waste feed ratios were investigated. Subsequently, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were fed with the commercial feed, commercial dried HM, dried HM, and fresh HM, followed by a human health risk assessment of Hg via fish consumption. The THg concentrations of HM fed with food waste ranged from 39.5 to 100 μg kg-1 ww. Concentrations of MeHg in the maggots fed with 100 % vegetables and meat (VM) waste (13.7 ±

The risk of the waterborne toxicity caused by herbicides threatens the aquatic environment. In this study, propolis nanoparticles were shown to relieve the impacts of glyphosate-induced oxidative stress and immunosuppression in Nile tilapia. The control group was fed a basal diet and maintained in a glyphosate-free water (control). Simultaneously, the other three groups were exposed to sublethal concentrations of glyphosate (0.6 mg/L) and fed diets containing 0 and 10 g propolis and 10 g propolis nanoparticles for 4 weeks. Nile tilapia exposed to glyphosate for 2 and 4 weeks exhibited a signif

Streptococcosis and motile aeromonad septicemia (MAS) are well-known diseases in tilapia culture, which cause mass mortality with significant economic losses. The development of feed-based bivalent vaccines in controlling these diseases has been initiated, however, the mechanisms of immunities and cross-protection in fish remain unclear. This study was conducted to assess the immuno-protective as well as the cross-protective efficacy of a newly developed feed-based bivalent vaccine against Streptococcus and Aeromonas infections in red hybrid tilapia. A total of five groups of fish were vaccina

Streptococcus agalactiae is considered the main bacterial pathogen in cultured Nile tilapia. Formaldehyde-inactivated vaccines are the most accepted method for prevention and control of the disease. However, alternative inactivation methods for S. agalactiae vaccines have not been fully explored. Recently, we developed a hydrogen peroxide-inactivated vaccine against S. agalactiae with moderate efficacy, with the possibility to improve vaccine efficacy by adding adjuvants. The current study compared the efficacy of aluminum hydroxide and Freund's incomplete adjuvant (FIA) incorporated into a no

Cucullanus tucunarensis n. sp. (Cucullanidae) is described parasitizing the peacock bass Cichla piquiti (Cichlidae) from the Tocantins River, Tocantins State, Brazil. The new species is unique and differs from all its congeners by having a tail tip provided with several sclerotized spine-like processes on its ventral side, present in both the male and female. Furthermore, C. tucunarensis n. sp. is compared with other species of the genus recorded in the same zoogeographical region and in the same group of hosts (Perciformes).

Fish allergy is one of the most common food allergies in populations where fish is a major part of the diet. Most fish-allergic patients react to the panallergen parvalbumin present in multiple fish species. Our aim was to investigate the clinical case of a patient with oral allergy syndrome to pangasius and Nile tilapia but tolerance of other fish and seafood. The temporal relationship between fish consumption and allergic symptoms, the positive skin prick tests, and the basophil activation test results for both fish species strongly supported the diagnosis of an immunoglobulin (Ig) E-mediate

BACKGROUND: Lake Tanganyika is considered a biodiversity hotspot with exceptional species richness and level of endemism. Given the global importance of the lake in the field of evolutionary biology, the understudied status of its parasite fauna is surprising with a single digenean species reported to date. Although the most famous group within the lake's fish fauna are cichlids, the pelagic zone is occupied mainly by endemic species of clupeids (Actinopterygii: Clupeidae) and lates perches (Actinopterygii: Latidae, Lates Cuvier), which are an important commercial source for local fisheries. T cells utilize diverse T cell receptors (TCRs) to recognize antigenic peptides and mediate adaptive immunity. However, the organization and function of αβ T cells in early vertebrates remain poorly understood. Here, we systematically characterized the TCRα locus and αβ T cell responses in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) during Edwardsiella piscicida infection. Genomic analysis revealed that the TCRα locus in Nile tilapia exhibits a distinctive Vα(61)-Jα(82)-Cα(1)-Vα(65) structure with conserved synteny in the flanking regions, while the constant region retains essential residues for TCR/

Tilapia lake virus (TiLV), an orthomyxovirus, poses a significant threat to global tilapia aquaculture. However, there has been limited success in developing commercial vaccines. The current study assessed the protective efficacy of a cell culture-derived, formalin-inactivated whole virus vaccine for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) administered via injection or immersion. Upon viral challenge, the vaccinated fish yielded relative percent survivals of 100% and 83.88% to injection and immersion vaccinations, respectively. Immune responses were assessed through standardized IgM and IgZ indir

Immersion anaesthesia is widely used in fish handling and research, yet optimization of protocols requires not only effective immobilization but also consideration of internal physiological responses. This study evaluated the effects of immersion-administered lidocaine (60 and 80 mg/L) as an adjuvant to clove essential oil (CEO; 100 μL/L) on anaesthesia induction and recovery in juvenile Oreochromis niloticus under tightly controlled temperature (27.5°C ± 0.3°C). Behavioural endpoints included loss of equilibrium (LOE), time to an operational anaesthetic plane and recovery time; opercular resp

The adverse effect of chlorpyrifos (CPF) in fish farms is well known. However, dietary supplementation of Artemisia annua (A. annua) may decrease the negative effect of chlorpyrifos because of the ameliorating effect of A. annua. The aim of this study was to see how A. annua ameliorated the toxic effects of CPF on fish growth, health, growth-related gene expression, and gills, liver, and intestinal histology for 30 days. 120 Nile tilapia fish were divided into four groups according to A. annua with/without CPF. The Cont group was fed a formulated basal diet without CPF water contamination. The

Collection and usage of testicular spermatozoa are often required for reproduction practices due to low sperm volume, reduced sperm density, urine contamination, and utilization of spermatozoa of sex-reversed broodstocks. No previous study has investigated in vitro maturation (IVM) of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) testicular spermatozoa, despite being a widely cultured species in the world. The main aim of the present study was to establish an IVM protocol for testicular spermatozoa of this species. Accordingly, testicular sperm samples were first diluted with four different media inclu

Pollution of aquatic bodies with microplastics is a main concern endangering aquatic life and aquaculture. This study highlights the potential protective benefits of thymol (TML) supplementation against polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) exposure in Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia). Over a 60-d, fish (n = 160; 27.62 ± 0.20 g) were split into four groups (40 fish/group; 4 replicates per group). The control (C) and TML groups were consumed basal diets augmented with 0 and 2 g TML/kg without exposure to PS-MPs. Conversely, the PS-MPs and TML + PS-MPs groups received the same diets as the C an
