Paleoclimatic changes during the late Cenozoic led to substantial losses of tree diversity in Western and Central Europe. A modern synthesis linking which taxa were lost, the timing of these losses, and their implications for the adaptation of the region's forest ecosystems to ongoing climate change is needed. Here, we compile a dataset of fossil occurrences of tree genera from Western and Central Europe to analyze tree diversity changes during the Cenozoic (66 Ma - present). We find that tree genus richness declined 75% after its peak in the Miocene (23 - 5.3 Ma), with most losses already occ

Based on elements of social exchange theory and other conceptualizations of trust, a model was developed situating organizational trust as a central component to the relationship that safety climate has with organizational outcomes. Specifically, the model specified that two facets of safety climate--upward safety communication and management attitudes toward safety--would be positively related to organizational trust. Increased levels of trust would then predict increased motivation to engage in safe job-related behaviors, increased job satisfaction, and decreased turnover intentions. Another

The climate crisis is the greatest threat to global health. Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have increased the temperature of the Earth by over 1.5 °C and caused sea levels to rise by over 24 cm since the beginning of the 20th century. 2024 was the warmest year on record and the last 10 hottest years have all occurred in the last 10 years. Climate models suggest that global surface temperature could rise between 1.5 °C and 5.5 °C compared with the pre-industrial period by 2100, and sea-level rise could be between 0.5 m and 1.3 m. Climate change is already causing significant shifts in w

Research on air quality and human health "co-benefits" from climate mitigation strategies represents a growing area of policy-relevant scholarship. Compared to other aspects of climate and energy policy evaluation, however, there are still relatively few of these co-benefits analyses. This sparsity reflects a historical disconnect between research quantifying energy and climate, and research dealing with air quality and health. The air quality co-benefits of climate, clean energy, and transportation electrification policies are typically assessed with models spanning social, physical, chemical

Species Distribution Models (SDMs) are used to estimate environmental suitability and the potential distribution of organisms based on occurrence records and climatic variables. However, traditional approaches rely on long-term climatic averages, producing static predictions with no ability to capture seasonal variations that are particularly relevant for short life-cycle species, such as disease vectors. In this study, we developed Dynamic Species Distribution Models (DSDMs) for Ae. aegypti and An. darlingi by integrating monthly occurrence records and corresponding climatic variables from 20

Cholera is a bacterial disease, its spread is strongly influenced by environmental factors and some socio-economic factors such as hygiene standards and nutrition of the population. This paper is devoted to the modelling of the impact of climatic factors and human behaviour on the spread of cholera. The mathematical modelling incorporates the direct transmission and the indirect transmission due to environmental knowledge. Taking into account the effect of the intra-annual variation of climatic factors on the transmission of cholera, a non-autonomous ordinary differential equations is proposed

BACKGROUND: Climate change poses a significant threat to global ecosystems by altering the geographical distribution of plant species. Glycyrrhiza uralensis, a plant of considerable economic importance, is distributed widely across arid and semi-arid regions. Understanding how its habitat suitability and distribution may shift in response to climate change is crucial for its sustainable management and conservation. This study used species distribution modeling to project current and future distribution patterns of G. uralensis in China and Mongolia, providing a scientific basis for its resourc

BACKGROUND: Habitat suitability of Anopheles mosquitoes depends on appropriate climate and land-use conditions. Anopheles mosquitoes are the main vectors for malaria transmission in the Euro-Mediterranean region, and there are major concerns that these species will expand and/or shift their range due to the expected changes in climate and land-use. This study aims to identify the main climate and land-use drivers of changes in the habitat suitability for six different Anopheles species between 2000 and 2020 within the Euro-Mediterranean region.
METHODS: Boosted regression trees were applied t

The cycling of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the ocean is closely linked to seawater alkalinity and the regulation of atmospheric CO2. In the modern pelagic ocean, almost all CaCO3 is produced by three groups of calcifying planktonic organisms: coccolithophores, foraminifers, and shelled pteropods. In this Review, we examine the differences in functional traits that define each group's distinctive role in the global carbon cycle and their sensitivity to climate change and ocean acidification. This synthesis reveals that a single representation of CaCO3 in climate models is unlikely to accuratel

BACKGROUND: Many models for predicting dengue epidemics use incidence and short-term changes in climate variables, however, studies in real-life scenarios for correlations of seroprevalence (SP) with long-term climate variables and with integration of socio-economic factors are scarce. Our objective was to analyse the combined correlation between socio-economic and climate variables with the SP of dengue in Mexico.
METHODS: We performed a seroepidemiological ecological study on the Mexican Pacific coast. Dengue SP was estimated by the presence of immunoglobulin G antibodies in 1278 inhabitant

Catastrophe models, which describe and predict discontinuous changes in system state variables, were used to model the exposure to blood and bodily fluids and more conventional occupational accidents among 1708 health care workers. Workers at three hospitals completed a survey measuring HIV-relevant exposures (needlesticks, cuts, splashes, contact with open wounds), the accident rate for broadly-defined injuries, and several occupationally relevant themes: safety climate, shift work, depression symptoms, work pace, verbal abuse, and professional group membership. A cusp (cubic polynomial) mode

Over the past decade, the Caribbean region has been challenged by compound climate and health hazards, including tropical storms, extreme heat and droughts and overlapping epidemics of mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue, chikungunya and Zika. Early warning systems (EWS) are a key climate change adaptation strategy for the health sector. An EWS can integrate climate information in forecasting models to predict the risk of disease outbreaks several weeks or months in advance. In this article, we share our experiences of co-learning during the process of co-creating a dengue EWS for the he

BACKGROUND: The extent to which climate change may affect human health by increasing risk from vector-borne diseases has been under considerable debate.
OBJECTIVES: We quantified potential effects of future climate change on the basic reproduction number (R0) of the tick vector of Lyme disease, Ixodes scapularis, and explored their importance for Lyme disease risk, and for vector-borne diseases in general.
METHODS: We applied observed temperature data for North America and projected temperatures using regional climate models to drive an I. scapularis population model to hindcast recent, and

INTRODUCTION: Nurses' ethical competence and the ethical climate of healthcare settings are critical in promoting high-quality and individualised care. However, these factors may also contribute to various stereotypes that healthcare professionals hold towards older adults, potentially hindering the recognition of patients' individuality. The aim of this study was to investigate possible associations between nurses' characteristics, ethical competence, perceived ethical climate and stereotypes towards older adults in long-term care settings.
METHODS: This was a cross sectional survey study. N

Forest roads directly influence storm runoff, soil erosion, and sediment transport, making soil and water conservation essential. This study estimated runoff and erosion using the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) model for a typical unimproved forest road in the Chipola Experimental Forest, considering two alternative designs: a compacted "graded aggregate base" and a gravel surface. Both historical and future performance were evaluated using five widely used climate models in their Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) fifth phase (CMIP5) and sixth phase (CMIP6) versions under e

Climate change influences the frequency of extreme events that affect both human and natural systems. It requires systemic climate change adaptation to address the complexity of risks across multiple domains and tackle the uncertainties of future scenarios. This paper introduces a multirisk analysis of climate hazard, exposure, vulnerability, and risk severity, specifically designed to hotspot geographic locations and prioritize system receptors that are affected by climate-related extremes. The analysis is demonstrated for the Metropolitan City of Venice. Representative scenarios (RCP4.5 and

BACKGROUND: Climate change is expected to alter the global footprint of many infectious diseases, particularly vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue. Knowledge of the range and geographical context of expected climate change impacts on disease transmission and spread, combined with knowledge of effective adaptation strategies and responses, can help to identify gaps and best practices to mitigate future health impacts. To investigate the types of evidence for impacts of climate change on two major mosquito-borne diseases of global health importance, malaria and dengue, and to identi

Climate change will inevitably influence both the distribution of Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium and the incidence of schistosomiasis in areas where it is currently endemic, and impact on the feasibility of schistosomiasis control and elimination goals. There are several limitations of current models of climate and schistosome transmission, and substantial gaps in empirical data that impair model development. In this review we consider how temperature, precipitation, heat waves, drought, and flooding could impact on snail and schistosome population dynamics. We discuss how wid

Understanding how climate change alters the geographic correspondence between pests and their natural enemies is important for identifying regions where climatic conditions may support further biological-control assessment. The whirligig mite Anystis baccarum (L.) is a generalist predator known to consume a variety of small arthropod pests, while the green peach aphid Myzus persicae (S.) is a globally invasive pest that damages a wide range of crops. However, the global climatic co-suitability and future geographic correspondence between A. baccarum and M. persicae remain poorly understood. He
