Multi-decadal tree-ring stable isotope records of apple and pear trees indicate coherent ecophysiological responses to environmental changes in alpine valleys.

The ecophysiological and ecohydrological impacts of climate change and progressively increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration on agroecosystems are not well understood compared to the forest ecosystems. In this study, we utilized the presence of old apple and pear trees in the alpine valleys of Northern Italy (maintained for cultural heritage purposes) to investigate climate-scale physiological responses. We developed long-term tree-ring stable isotopic records (δ13C and δ18O) from apple (1976-2021) and pear trees (1943-2021). This allowed the reconstruction of key ecophysiolo

Impact of climate change on Chinese medicinal plants and adaptation strategies.

AIMS: Global climate change threats to plant communities worldwide. This review explicitly narrows its scope exclusively to Chinese medicine plants (CMPs), the core raw materials for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). CMPs are distinguished by clinical efficacy dependent on complex secondary‑metabolite mixtures, geo‑authentic (Daodi) production systems, and large‑scale industrial supply chains. Existing studies remain fragmented, most studies examine single‑factor stress, whereas few systematically link ecological shifts, phytochemical disturbance, clinical therapeutic performance, and indust

Heat stress in cereal crops: reproductive development and grain filling.

Increasingly frequent extreme heat events threaten cereal production and food security under a changing climate. The reproductive-to-grain formation continuum of cereals is particularly vulnerable to elevated temperatures, as heat stress disrupts developmental processes from inflorescence formation and fertilization to grain filling and quality establishment. These disruptions reduce reproductive success, impair yield formation, and compromise grain quality. A comprehensive understanding of the developmental, physiological, molecular, and genetic basis of cereal heat tolerance is therefore ess

Social Transformation in Environmental Awareness: The Role of Hospital Employees in the Transformation Process-Results of a Survey in Germany.

Against the backdrop of increasing challenges posed by ongoing climate change, pollution and its associated implications and environmental and climate protection measures have become the focus of politics and society in recent years. But adaptation and mitigation require changes in behavior among the population. This means that a process of social transformation must take place. Based on the thesis that people working in healthcare facilities can make a relevant contribution to the social transformation of environmental awareness, this study examines the general and workplace-related environme

Persistent low PHB accumulation during pilot-scale gas fermentation in Cupriavidus necator.

Climate change and food security are tightly linked global challenges. Gas fermentation offers a sustainable route to convert CO₂ into microbial single-cell protein (SCP), with hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) emerging as efficient biomass producers via the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle. While SCP can replace protein-rich feed components, intracellular polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) accumulation redirects carbon and reducing power away from biomass and protein synthesis, reducing process efficiency. With this aim, a low amount of PHB is needed to focus on protein production rather than PHB accumulat

Reduced N2 fixation in the tropical Atlantic Ocean during the warm late Pliocene.

Water column denitrification, a major oceanic nitrogen (N) sink, decreased under past warmer-than-present climates, but the response of N2 fixation, the main oceanic N source, remains unresolved. Here we address this gap using foraminifera-bound N isotope records from the tropical Atlantic spanning the warm late Pliocene, a geological analog for projected 21st century warming. Our records show that tropical North Atlantic N2 fixation was reduced during the late Pliocene and had increased markedly by the late Pleistocene, likely due to an increase in water column denitrification, a process that

Comparing the environmental impact of reusable and disposable dental examination kits: a life cycle assessment approach.

Introduction The global climate crisis has increased the emphasis placed on the sustainability and environmental consequences of our actions. The dental examination accounts for a large portion of dentistry's carbon footprint, more specifically, the production, sterilisation, transport, use and disposal of the dental examination kit. An attributional life cycle assessment (LCA) was carried out to compare the impact of a reusable stainless-steel examination kit and that of a disposable plastic examination kit.Materials and methods All inputs, outputs and processes across the life cycle were acc

Iron isotopes reveal distinct dissolved iron sources and pathways in the intermediate versus deep Southern Ocean.

As an essential micronutrient, iron plays a key role in oceanic biogeochemistry. It is therefore linked to the global carbon cycle and climate. Here, we report a dissolved iron (DFe) isotope section in the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean. Throughout the section, a striking DFe isotope minimum (light iron) is observed at intermediate depths (200-1,300 m), contrasting with heavier isotopic composition in deep waters. This unambiguously demonstrates distinct DFe sources and processes dominating the iron cycle in the intermediate and deep layers, a feature impossible to see with only iron concen

Predicting water quality and water treatment operations under future climate scenarios using machine learning models.

Climate change is altering the water quality through changes in temperature, rainfall patterns, and weather events. Predicting future water quality becomes crucial as the impacts of climate change intensify, altering surface water quality and subsequent treatment operations. This study developed predictive models that were trained on climate parameters to predict inflow water quality and treatment plant operations using Multivariate Linear Regression, XGBoost, and Nonlinear Autoregressive with Exogenous Inputs (NARX). The NARX model consistently demonstrated superior performance across most wa

Temperature Response of Soil Organic Matter Decomposition Rates: Construction and Applications of a Temperature Gradient Block.

Soil is the Earth's largest carbon (C) reservoir, holding nearly twice as much C as the atmosphere. Climate change-induced temperature increases could enhance soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition, potentially releasing carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, thus resulting in a positive feedback to climate change. This presents the question: how can we define the response of SOM decomposition rates to short-term changes in temperature? Can we utilize this data to fit mechanistically defined equations in Earth system models for climate predictions? Most research to date has focused on labo

Aflatoxin and Liver Cancer in China: The Evolving Research Landscape.

Aflatoxins, particularly aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), are among the most potent naturally occurring carcinogens and remain a major food-borne hazard in parts of Asia and Africa. China has generated a uniquely cohesive body of evidence connecting aflatoxin contamination to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), especially in settings where chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is highly prevalent and acts synergistically with aflatoxin exposure. Over five decades, field investigations and laboratory innovations-exemplified by long-term work in Qidong-have assembled a multi-layered causal chain spanning th

From individual coping to collective resilience: reframing mental health responses to global crises through geopsychiatry.

Global crises are reshaping the conditions under which mental health is produced, threatened, protected, and restored. Pandemics, climate change, armed conflict, forced migration, political instability, economic insecurity, disasters, and digital disruption do not affect mental health only through individual stress reactions or discrete traumatic exposures. They also transform the social, territorial, institutional, ecological, and symbolic environments in which people interpret threat, seek support, access care, maintain hope, and imagine the future. This Conceptual Analysis reframes mental h

Wildfire effects on the hydrogeochemistry of a river severely polluted by acid mine drainage.

This study evaluates for the first time the impact of a large wildfire on the hydrogeochemistry of a deeply AMD-affected river at the beginning of the wet season. To accomplish this, a high-resolution water monitoring campaign was performed within the basin coinciding with the first rainfalls after summer. Unlike similar events recorded in AMD-affected areas, where dramatic increases in most dissolved element concentrations, and decreases in pH values are observed as a result of evaporitic salts flushing and the transport of sulfide oxidation products from mine sites, a slight increase in pH v

Role of Peat Moss (Sphagnum) in Reduction of Environmental Toxicity in Correlation with Various Microbes.

Peat moss (Sphagnum) plays a crucial role in extenuating the environmental toxicity by swaying the microbial activity and acting as a natural filter for removing pollutants. The peatlands help in the purification of water by filtering out the contaminants and decomposing organic matter by creating anaerobic conditions that create impacts on microbial communities. Additionally, Sphagnum pays for carbon sequestration that makes a positive impact in the carbon sinks process for peatlands. However, decomposition rates of peat vary based on various factors such as humidity, microbial population, an

Rapid cloud removal of dimethyl sulfide oxidation products limits SO2 and cloud condensation nuclei production in the marine atmosphere.

Oceans emit large quantities of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) to the marine atmosphere. The oxidation of DMS leads to the formation and growth of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) with consequent effects on Earth's radiation balance and climate. The quantitative assessment of the impact of DMS emissions on CCN concentrations necessitates a detailed description of the oxidation of DMS in the presence of existing aerosol particles and clouds. In the unpolluted marine atmosphere, DMS is efficiently oxidized to hydroperoxymethyl thioformate (HPMTF), a stable intermediate in the chemical trajectory toward s

Nutrient status: a missing factor in phenological and pollen research?

Phenology ranks among the best ecosystem processes for fingerprinting climate change since temperature explains a high percentage of the interannual or spatial variation in phenological onset dates. However, roles of other environmental variables, such as foliar nutrient concentrations, are far from adequately understood. This observational study examined the effects of air temperature and 11 nutrients on spring phenology of Betula pendula Roth (birch) along an urban-rural gradient in Munich, Germany, during the years 2010/2011. Moreover, the influence of temperature, nutrients, and air pollut

A life cycle assessment of the laboratory-scale oxidative liquefaction as the chemical recycling method of the end-of-life wind turbine blades.

According to the latest reports, estimated values of 50,000-66 000 t of end-of-life wind turbine blades (WTB) are expected to be decommissioned in Europe in 2025-2030, posing a significant threat from the environmental and waste management perspectives. This study aims to present the preliminary Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of the lab-scale oxidative liquefaction process of the WTB, as the original method to recover the high-quality glass fibers with simultaneous production of the secondary chemicals: phenols, ketones, acids, and fatty acids, from the o

Large contribution of natural aerosols to uncertainty in indirect forcing.

The effect of anthropogenic aerosols on cloud droplet concentrations and radiative properties is the source of one of the largest uncertainties in the radiative forcing of climate over the industrial period. This uncertainty affects our ability to estimate how sensitive the climate is to greenhouse gas emissions. Here we perform a sensitivity analysis on a global model to quantify the uncertainty in cloud radiative forcing over the industrial period caused by uncertainties in aerosol emissions and processes. Our results show that 45 per cent of the variance of aerosol forcing since about 1750
