We report a radiological analysis of 281 primary cementless ABG total hip arthroplasties performed between 1991 and 1994, with a mean follow-up of 78 months. We compare the polyethylene wear in hips with Zirconia ceramic heads manufactured prior to the introduction of hot isostatic pressing and hips with cobalt chrome heads. The S-bonded sulfenamide isomers have been prepared by the known reaction of hydroxylamine-O-sulfonate with (en)(2)Co(III) thiolate complexes of aminoethanethiol, cysteine, and penicillamine and the cis dithiolate formed by N,N'-ethylene-di-penicillamine (EDP) and Co(III). Substituted metalloporphyrins, in addition to their use as pharmacological agents, are used to investigate metabolic pathways by inhibiting cytochrome P-450. We have examined the specificity of this approach with cobalt mesoporphyrin (CoMP). Insufficient supply of white rats with I, Cu, Co for 2.5 months has induced disturbances of iodine, carbohydrate and protein metabolism which are reliably more significant than those in rats with deficiency of only iodine in the ration. The correlation-regression analysis of results from these observations shows cause-consequent relations of changes in main links of iodine metabolism as well as changes in PCI concentrations and indices of carbohydrate and protein metabolism with deficiency of I, Cu and Co in the body.

The value of estimates of trace element requirements or of data on tissue trace element content for identifying and controlling trace element-related disorders is often limited by inadequate data on the relationships of such criteria to physiological performance. Investigations of metabolic events initiating early pathological responses to deficiency are beginning to suggest more effective indicators of physiologically relevant abnormalities in trace element intake or status. Progress in studies of metabolic responses to deficiencies of copper, cobalt and zinc is reviewed.
