CONCLUSION: The new method of facial recess enlargement through suspending, antedisplacing, and adhering the chorda tympani nerve to the posterior wall of the auditory canal can expose the round window, make electrode insertion easier, and preserve the function of the facial nerve and chorda tympani nerve.
OBJECTIVE: To describe and report cochlear implantation surgery in patients with narrow facial recess, including surgical technique and postoperative outcomes.
METHODS: Cochlear implantation surgery was performed in our hospital in 39 cases with narrow facial recess by enlarging the facial…

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: To highlight the complications of using hydroxyapatite (HA) bone cement when implanting a cochlear implant (CI) device.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A case series of three patients who had undergone cochlear implantation are presented. A bony defect was seen in the external auditory meatal wall posteriorly in all three cases. This was intimately related to the site of HA bone cement, which had been used to anchor the electrode array at the time of the original implantation. Persistent otorrhoea was usually a feature at clinical presentation. INTERVENTION (AND TECHNIQUE): R…

OBJECTIVES: Although deaf children with cochlear implants (CIs) are able to develop good language skills, the large variability in outcomes remains a significant concern. The first aim of this study was to evaluate language skills in children with CIs to establish benchmarks. The second aim was to make an estimation of the optimal age at implantation to provide maximal opportunities for the child to achieve good language skills afterward. The third aim was to gain more insight into the causes of variability to set recommendations for optimizing the rehabilitation process of prelingually deaf c

OBJECTIVES: To compare hearing outcomes in patients with far advanced otosclerosis (FAO) undergoing cochlear implantation to an age-matched group of controls, to describe the effects of cochlear ossification on hearing, and to review the adverse effects of implantation in patients with FAO.
HYPOTHESIS: Hearing performance in patients with FAO after cochlear implantation is comparable to similarly treated postlingually deafened adults without FAO. Ossification or retrofenestral otosclerosis does not predict poor hearing outcomes. Modiolar-hugging technology reduces postoperative facial nerve s…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the results of cochlear implantation in patients with neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) who have previously been treated with radiation therapy to the vestibular schwannoma (VS) in their only hearing ear.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of the Melbourne Cochlear implant database was undertaken to identify patients with NF2 undergoing cochlear implantation in whom previous radiation therapy had been performed to control their VS (ipsilateral tumor). Three patients were identified. A case note review was undertaken and data collected on preoperative and postoperative…

OBJECTIVE: To review the cochlear implant program in Ramathibodi Hospital and share experience of cochlear implantation emphasized on clinical and surgical outcomes.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Retrospective review of 143 ears (140 patients) operated with cochlear implant between 1995 and 2009. The demographic data including etiology of deafness and findings from temporal bone CTscans were reviewed. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the hearing and speech recognition in patients with large vestibular aqueduct syndrome undergoing multi-channel cochlear implantation.
METHODS: From 2005 to 2008, multi-channel cochlear implantation surgeries were performed in 22 patients with large vestibular aqueduct syndrome. All the patients received multi-channel cochlear implantation through transmastoid facial recess approach. The postoperative outcomes of the patients were compared with those of 22 patients with non-malformed cochlear.
RESULTS: Severe gusher occurred in 3 cases during the implantation, and peri…

OBJECTIVES: To examine the evidence for a cochlear, retrocochlear, or central site of lesion for deafness in two cochlear implant recipients with Kearns-Sayre Syndrome (KSS).
DESIGN: Speech perception data and electrically evoked Auditory Brainstem (eABR) and Middle Latency Responses were obtained in two patients with KSS and compared with a group of non-KSS implant recipients.
RESULTS: Speech perception data and electrophysiological responses for the patients with KSS were similar to those obtained in non-KSS patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Results are consistent with an initial cochlear site of le

OBJECTIVE: To define the presentation and outcome of cochlear implantation in a patient with profound sensorineural hearing loss due to superficial siderosis.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
RESULTS: Postimplantation speech reception threshold was 34 dB, and hearing in noise testing sentences were 71% demonstrating a successful outcome. These results have been maintained for 5 years after implantation.
CONCLUSION: Cochlear implantation is a potentially successful rehabilitation option for certain patients with profound sensorineural hearing loss due to superficial siderosis.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implantation has become the method of choice for the treatment of deaf patients. A better technology of stimulation opened a wider field of patients suitable for cochlear implantation. Aim of the present study was to evaluate to which extent senior patients benefit by cochlear implantation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 36 patients between 65 and 85 years were tested by the Freiburger speech test for monosyllabic words and by the HSM sentence test with and without noise. The results were compared to those of younger implanted patients (16 - 64 years, n = 101).
RESULTS: The speec…
