Understanding Healthcare Workers' COVID-19 Vaccination Decision-Making as a Dynamic Process: A Qualitative Meta-Synthesis.

Background/Objectives: Healthcare workers play a critical role in vaccination programs, yet vaccine hesitancy has been widely reported even among this group during the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Previous studies have primarily focused on identifying factors associated with vaccine acceptance, offering limited insight into the processes underlying decision-making. This study aimed to synthesize qualitative studies on healthcare workers' COVID-19 vaccination experiences to develop a comprehensive understanding of their decision-making processes. Methods: A qualitative meta-syn

Global gaps in how we assess undergraduate medical students' mental health: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health problems among undergraduate medical students are a major global public health concern that emerge early during training and are shaped by demanding educational environments, emotional stressors and organisational pressures. Although research has expanded rapidly, the literature remains fragmented across themes, regions and methods. This scoping review aims to map the global quantitative literature on medical students' mental health and identify gaps in scope, geography, methodology and equity. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review will be conducted in accordan

Automated Detection of Digital Alcohol Marketing Using SCANNER: An Integrated Deep-Learning Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol marketing significantly influences consumption patterns, particularly among youth, heavy drinkers and women. Digital platforms have amplified this impact through targeted, immersive campaigns. However, monitoring such marketing remains a challenge due to its opaque and dynamic nature. This study introduces SCANNER Alcohol, an AI-enabled system designed to detect alcohol marketing in online content at the brand level. METHODS: SCANNER Alcohol integrates object detection (logos) and optical character recognition (text) to automatically identify 134 alcohol brands within im

How can a remotely delivered, personalised physical activity intervention for people with high risk of breast, lung and bowel cancer recurrence be implemented in England? Protocol for a mixed-methods process evaluation embedded in a feasibility basket trial.

INTRODUCTION: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are essential to determine intervention effectiveness yet they often fail to capture how and why interventions succeed or fail in different contexts. Embedding a process evaluation alongside a clinical trial allows exploration of implementation processes, intervention fidelity and contextual influences. The CANFit trial is a basket-design RCT evaluating a personalised, remotely delivered exercise intervention for people diagnosed with breast, lung and bowel cancer with increased risk of recurrence. This embedded process evaluation aims to under

Health and education outcomes from adolescence to adulthood for young people with neurodisability and their peers: protocol for a population-based cohort study using linked hospital and education data from England.

INTRODUCTION: Children and young people with neurodisability (conditions affecting the brain or nervous system, creating functional impairment, eg, autism, learning disabilities, epilepsy, cerebral palsy or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) have more complex health and educational needs than their peers, contributing to higher healthcare use and special educational needs (SEN) provision. To guide policy and improve services, evidence is needed on how health and education support and outcomes change with age for adolescents with and without neurodisability. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Using

International phase 1 study protocol to develop a health state classification system for a preference-based measure for women with breast cancer: the BREAST-Q Utility module.

INTRODUCTION: Concerns unique to women with breast cancer can include impact of cancer on body image, sexual well-being and changes in breast appearance and sensation. These important issues are not captured by the existing generic preference-based measures (PBMs) and no breast cancer-specific PBM currently exists. This Phase 1 protocol describes a mixed-methods study to develop and validate the descriptive health state classification system for a breast cancer-specific PBM, called the BREAST-Q Utility module. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A heterogeneous sample of women aged 18 years and older diagn

Randomised controlled trial assessing the effect of a technology-assisted gait and balance training on mobility in older people after hip fracture: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Deficits in balance and walking ability are relevant risk factors for falls during ageing. Moreover, falls are a risk factor for future falls, strongly associated with adverse health outcomes, such as fear of falling or fractures, particularly, hip fracture. For this reason, the development of prevention tools and innovative rehabilitation strategies is one of the main objectives in geriatrics. Effective interventions to promote hip recovery after hip fracture are characterised by intensive and repetitive movements. One treatment approach is to increase the number of steps during

Study protocol for a phase II, multicentre, prospective, non-randomised clinical trial to assess the safety and efficacy of infusing allogeneic activated and expanded natural killer cells as consolidation therapy for paediatric acute myeloblastic leukaemia.

INTRODUCTION: Acute myeloblastic leukaemia (AML) constitutes the second most common haematological malignancy in the paediatric population. Current treatment regimens are based on the administration of polychemotherapy, combining high doses of cytarabine with anthracyclines and topoisomerase inhibitors. Allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an option for high-risk patients with AML (and for intermediate-risk patients if a sibling donor is available). With this strategy, AML survival has increased substantially; however, it has remained stagnant at approximately 60%, wit

SSHeW study protocol: does slip resistant footwear reduce slips among healthcare workers? A randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Slips, trips and falls are common causes of injuries in the workplace. It is estimated that in Great Britain, nearly 1 million days are taken off work due to these injuries. There is some evidence to suggest this accident burden could be reduced by the use of slip resistant footwear. This protocol describes a multicentre trial investigating the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of slip resistant footwear to prevent slips in National Health Service (NHS) staff working in clinical, general or catering environments. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A two-arm, randomised controlled trial co

Recreational drug use in the Oslo nightlife setting: study protocol for a cross-sectional time series using biological markers, self-reported and qualitative data.

INTRODUCTION: Recreational drug use in the nightlife setting carries the risk of many negative consequences, such as violence, injuries, aberrant driving and sexual risk-taking. The aim of this study is to investigate recreational drug use and user characteristics among people visiting licensed premises, for example, nightclubs and bars, by using self-reports and biological markers. Staff of licensed premises will be asked to report drug use observations. Further, by using qualitative data, we will examine the motives, consequences and culture associated with recreational drug use. An addition

Acute Whiplash Injury Study (AWIS): a protocol for a cluster randomised pilot and feasibility trial of an Active Behavioural Physiotherapy Intervention in an insurance private setting.

INTRODUCTION: Whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) causes substantial social and economic burden internationally. Up to 60% of patients with WAD progress to chronicity. Research therefore needs to focus on effective management in the acute stage to prevent the development of chronicity. Approximately 93% of patients are classified as WADII (neck complaint and musculoskeletal sign(s)), and in the UK, most are managed in the private sector. In our recent systematic review, a combination of active and behavioural physiotherapy was identified as potentially effective in the acute stage. An Active Be

Using hormones to manage dairy cow fertility: the clinical and ethical beliefs of veterinary practitioners.

In the face of a steady decline in dairy cow fertility over several decades, using hormones to assist reproduction has become common. In the European Union, hormones are prescription-only medicines, giving veterinary practitioners a central role in their deployment. This study explored the clinical and ethical beliefs of practitioners, and provides data on their current prescribing practices. During 2011, 93 practitioners working in England completed a questionnaire (95% response rate). Of the 714 non-organic farms they attended, only 4 farms (0.6%) never used hormones to assist the inseminati

Experiences and challenges of pediatric intensive care unit nurses in Iran: a qualitative content analysis study.

PURPOSE: Pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) are demanding places to work. Nurses there provide complex, continuous care to critically ill children and support distressed families, often with too few staff and limited resources. In Iran, little is known about how PICU nurses experience these pressures. This study explored their experiences and considered how these challenges may affect nurses' well-being and the quality and safety of care. PROCEDURES: We used conventional content analysis, following Graneheim and Lundman. Fifteen nurses were recruited by purposive maximum variation samplin

Adherence to sexual and reproductive health programmes among migrant women residing in the Basque Country: protocol for a mixed-methods study on implementation and influencing factors.

INTRODUCTION: The increased resources available to improve the population's sexual and reproductive health do not always reach migrant women equally. This is relevant in a context where 26.6% of births in 2024 were to foreign-born mothers. The objective of this study is to analyse the adherence among the migrant population in the autonomous region of the Basque Country (Spain) to the established protocols for pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal care, as well as their use of health services. In addition, it aims to identify the barriers and facilitators that influence their access to and contin

Iranian Chronic Kidney Disease Biobank as a comprehensive resource for next-generation research: study design and protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major and growing health burden, yet early diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers remain limited. Precision nephrology requires well-phenotyped longitudinal cohorts linked to high-quality biospecimens for future multi-omics studies, particularly from under-represented populations. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The Iranian Chronic Kidney Disease Biobank (ICKDB) is a prospective, single-city, two-centre cohort biobank in Isfahan, Iran. Adults aged 18-75 years with CKD stages G1-G4 are recruited alongside healthy, diabetic and hypertensive comparator groups.
