Coinfection of Pulmonary Hydatid Cyst and Aspergilloma: Case Report and Systematic Review.

Aspergilloma infection consists of a mass of fungal hyphae, inflammatory cells, fibrin, mucus, and tissue debris and can colonize lung cavities due to underlying diseases such as tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, bronchiectasis, cavitary lung cancer, neoplasms, ankylosing spondylitis, bronchial cysts, and pulmonary infarction. Here we report coinfection of pulmonary hydatid cyst and aspergilloma in a 34-year-old female who had had history of minor thalassemia and suffered from chest pain, dyspnea, non-productive cough for at least five months, and hemoptysis for 20 days. Radiographic sign showed a la…

Association between human papilloma virus/Epstein-Barr virus coinfection and oral carcinogenesis.

BACKGROUND: The recent epidemic of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas associated with human papilloma virus (HPV) has not addressed its association with lymphoid tissue in the oropharynx or the potential role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)/HPV coinfection. METHODS: The prevalence of HPV and EBV infection/coinfection and CD21 mRNA expression were determined in normal and cancerous tissues from the oropharynx using in situ hybridization (ISH), p16, and quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR (qRT-PCR). The effects of coinfection on tumorigenicity were evaluated using proliferation and invasion …

Management of Trypanosoma cruzi coinfection in HIV-positive individuals outside endemic areas.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Chagas disease has spread beyond the geographical barriers of the American continent in the past decade. Consequently … nd control of relapses; however, more information is needed. SUMMARY: Many aspects of T. cruzi-HIV coinfection remain uncertain. Until new data covering the current gaps become available, early diagnosis and prompt antiretroviral therapy seem to be fundamental for avoiding reactivations and improving late visceral involvement.

A case report of pulmonary coinfection of Strongyloides stercoralis and Pneumocystis jiroveci.

A case of pulmonary coinfection by Strongyloides stercoralis and Pneumocystis jiroveci has been detected in an AIDS patient treated in the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit of the Muñiz Hospital. At diagnosis, the patient presented cough with mucopurulent expectoration, dyspnea, fever, bilateral pulmonary infiltrates on the chest X-ray, negative bacilloscopy for acid fast bacteria and a CD4(+) T lymphocytes count of 52 cells/µL. The microbiological diagnosis was achieved by microscopic observation of the respiratory secretions obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage, while the wet mount examination r…

Novel developments in the epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus and tuberculosis coinfection.

Tuberculosis (TB) disease remains one of the highest causes of mortality in HIV-infected individuals, and HIV-TB coinfection continues to grow at alarming rates, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Surprisingly, a number of important areas regarding coinfection remain unclear. For example, increased risk of TB disease begins early in the course of HIV infection; however, the mechanism by which HIV increases this risk is not well understood. In addition, there is lack of consensus on the optimal way to diagnose latent TB infection and to manage active disease in those who are HIV infected. Furthe…

Streptococcus pneumoniae coinfection is correlated with the severity of H1N1 pandemic influenza.

BACKGROUND: Initial reports in May 2009 of the novel influenza strain H1N1pdm estimated a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.6%, similar to that of seasonal influenza. In July 2009, however, Argentina reported 3056 cases with 137 deaths, representing a CFR of 4.5%. Potential explanations for increased CFR included virus reassortment or genetic drift, or infection of a more vulnerable population. Virus genomic sequencing of 26 Argentinian samples representing both severe and mild disease indicated no evidence of reassortment, mutations associated with resistance to antiviral drugs, or genetic drift

[Coinfection between hepatitis B virus and malaria: clinical, serologic and immunologic aspects].

The Amazon region is known for a high prevalence of hepatitis B infection, and accounts for more than 90% of malaria cases in Brazil. It has been suggested that the occurrence of coinfections may be important, and may influence the natural history of both diseases. This study evaluated 545 patients with acute malaria, in Coari, Western Brazilian Amazon. 333 (61.1%) presented Plasmodium vivax malaria, 193 (35.4%) Plasmodium falciparum and 19 (3.5%) mixed infections. The HBsAg prevalence was 4.2% and total anti-HBc 49.7%. Patients with HBV serological markers presented no clinical differences th…

Coinfection with Babesia microti and Borrelia burgdorferi in a western Wisconsin resident.

A 68-year-old woman, who had not traveled outside of western Wisconsin, was hospitalized after 4 weeks of chills, fevers, myalgias, neuralgi … ody serology and Western blot analysis revealed a simultaneous infection with Borrelia burgdorferi. Coinfection with B. microti and B. burgdorferi may occur in endemic areas where both organisms are carried by the same tick vector, Ixodes scapularis. The intensity and duration of illness seem to be greatest in patients with concurrent infection.

Disseminated protothecosis in a dog coinfected with Hepatozoon canis and Ehrlichia canis.

Protothecosis is a severe, emerging opportunistic infection caused by the saprophytic, achlorophyllous microalgae of the genus Prototheca. Though uncommon, human and animal cases are increasing worldwide, making awareness of this fungal-like pathogen important in both human and veterinary medicine. We report a fatal case of disseminated protothecosis caused by P. wickherhamii in a 10-year-old, spayed, female, mixed-breed collie dog. Clinical signs included uveitis, ulcerated cutaneous nodules on the limbs and face, pododermatitis with nail loss and, lymphadenomegaly in the prescapular and popl

Experimental evolution of Plasmodium yoelii in single and helminth-coinfected mice.

BACKGROUND: Coinfection has the potential to affect key traits describing the infection dynamics, the severity of the disease and in fine parasite fitness. However, despite its pervasiveness, experimental work investigating how parasites adapt to the conditions provided by a coinfected host is mostly missing. METHODS: We adopted an experimental evolution approach to investigate if coinfection with the nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus (Hp) affected the infection dynamics and virulence of the murine malaria parasite Plasmodium yoelii (Py). To this purpose, lines of Py were passaged either in …

Leptospirosis and coinfections leading to fatal multiple organ and system failure.

Coinfection with leptospirosis and other infectious agents pose major challenges in medical practice, often due to difficulties in isolating these agents, symptoms overlap, and lack of specific investigation protocols in areas with emerging and re-emerging diseases. Consequently, knowledge regarding these coinfections and their impact on clinical outcomes are limited. A previously healthy 33-year-old woman, with no history of chronic or malignance diseases, was admitted with febrile icteric illness, pulmonary hemorrhage, acute kidney injury, thrombocytopenia, and shock. Leptospirosis, COVID-19…

A Case of Varicella Zoster and Mpox Coinfection in a Patient Living With HIV.

We present a case of recurrent, cutaneous mpox with coinfection of disseminated varicella zoster in an immunocompromised patient with poorly controlled HIV. This case demonstrates the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion for mpox despite prior infection and vaccination, as suboptimal immune response is possible in immunocompromised patients, and also noting the potential for coinfection necessitating timely diagnosis and appropriate testing.

Coinfection of the gut with protozoal and metazoal parasites in broiler and laying chickens.

The chicken business faces substantial economic losses due to the risk of parasitic coinfection. Because the current study aimed to investigate enteric parasitic coinfections problems among the suspected examined chicken farms, samples were collected during the field investigation from suspected freshly dead birds, clinically diseased, apparently healthy, and litter samples for further laboratory parasitological, histopathological, and immunological examinations. Variable mortalities with various clinical indicators, such as ruffled feathers, weight loss, diarrhea of various colors, and a decl…
