Intestinal intussusception is a relatively uncommon occurrence in adults in comparison to pediatric patients. While the management of intussusception in children is frequently decompression of the involved segment, adults often require surgical resection secondary to frequent association with neoplastic lead points. A less common reason for surgical removal of an intussuscepted segment in adults is the development of ischemic colitis. The authors present an unusual case of adult intussusception with associated ischemic colitis in a patient with portal hypertension awaiting liver transplantatio

Distinction between ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn disease (CD) in mucosal biopsies is often difficult. Das-1 and CG-3 are monoclonal antibodies directed against an unknown colonic epithelial protein and human tropomyosin isoform-5, respectively, both show altered expression in patients with UC. In this study, we evaluated the utility of Das-1 and CG-3 in distinguishing UC from CD and from other types of colitis. One colonic biopsy specimen from each of 85 patients with confirmed UC (n=25), CD (n=15), lymphocytic (n=15), collagenous (n=15), and ischemic (n=15) colitis, and also 10 samples f

OBJECTIVE: Inflammatory bowel diseases produce segmental or diffuse mural thickening of the intestine that can be detected and evaluated by using sonography. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sonographic findings and determine their diagnostic value in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed sonograms of 81 patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. The findings were compared with those of barium study, colonoscopy, and surgery. Forty-five patients had tuberculous enterocolitis, 13 had ulcerative colitis, eight had Crohn's disease, five had is

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a representative clinical manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease that causes chronic gastrointestinal tract inflammation. Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mice have been used to investigate UC pathogenesis, and in this UC model, disturbance and impairment of the mucosal epithelium have been reported to cause colitis. However, how DSS sporadically breaks down the epithelium remains unclear. In this study, we focused on the colonic microcirculation and myenteric neurons of DSS-induced colitis. Moreover, we examined the potential of myenteric neurons as

Diverse signs may be seen on barium enema in the various forms of colitis. Barium enema is only reasonably specific in the diagnosis of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis once the other possible diseases have been excluded from consideration by biopsy, microscopy, culture, or therapeutic trial. In particular, campylobacter colitis has proved to be such a common entity that many patients originally thought to have had one attack of ulcerative colitis, ischemic colitis, or Crohn's colitis may never have had these diseases. Many of the relatively specific signs can be seen in a variety of con…

The colon is affected by a number of diseases, mainly inflammatory, ischemic, and neoplastic conditions. Depending upon clinical indications endoscopy, US, CT, or other radiological methods are used for evaluation. The fact that US is frequently used as the initial imaging method in patients with non-specific clinical symptoms allows for greater influence in further diagnostic evaluation and with treatment, provided the investigator is familiar with the features of different intestinal diseases. This article will describe the anatomical characteristics of the colon, the US technique for examin

INTRODUCTION: Stercoral colitis caused by fecal impaction can lead to life-threatening ischemic injury of the colon. However, accurately assessing the severity and reversibility of ischemia remains challenging, particularly when determining the appropriate extent of surgical resection.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report 2 cases of stercoral colitis requiring emergency surgery. In both cases, CT demonstrated marked colonic dilatation due to fecal impaction, and intraoperative findings suggested diffuse colonic ischemia. Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging revealed patchy hypoperfusion throu

Shiga-like toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a well-known cause of foodborne acute diarrheic diseases, especially in children and the elderly. The potentially fatal complications associated with toxin production range from bloody diarrhea and ischemic colitis to kidney failure, hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), and colon perforation. Here, we describe a case and literature review of STEC-induced colitis, highlighting the clinical features and the necessary tools for the best diagnostic approach and management. Facing challenging differential diagnosis, ranging from ischemic colitis and

The blood flow within the walls of the digestive tract must be sufficient to maintain its structural and functional integrity. All episodes of vascular insufficiency cause ischemic damage to the organ and carry the threat of diffuse or focal necrosis. Certain forms of ischemic colitis or proctitis arise from episodes of reduced peripheric or splanchnic blood flow; indeed, those that do not culminate in necorsis of the colonic wall are more frequently caused by hemodynamic disorders than by vascular occlusions. The crisis is often mitigated by the development of collateral circulation, which is

Phlebosclerotic colitis (PC) is a rare type of chronic ischemic colitis. Its etiology is still unknown, and PC is also known as idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis colitis. Currently, many studies have reported that long-term use of Chinese herbal medicine and drinking history are related to its pathogenesis. In the early stage of the lesion, due to insufficient understanding of PC, it is difficult to distinguish it from inflammatory bowel disease and other nonneoplastic intestinal diseases. We reported a case of severe diffuse total colon calcification with multiple misdiagnosis, summarizin

We describe a 35-year-old woman with colonic phlebitis of unknown origin accompanied by effusion of serum protein into the peritoneal cavity. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography showed massive ascites and edematous wall thickness of the colon. Laboratory examination of the peritoneal fluid showed a high concentration of protein, probably due to nonselective efflux of serum protein. The main histopathological finding was extensive edema of the submucosa with vasculitis in the colon. This kind of phlebitis with massive ascites, but without systemic involvement, and with the ascitic

A 50-year-old man was referred to our hospital for colitis with abdominal pain and diarrhea that had persisted for more than 8 months. 9 months earlier, he had been treated for fulminant eosinophilic myocarditis. During steroid therapy, ulceration appeared in the esophagus, stomach and large intestine. The biopsy results showed cytomegalovirus (CMV) inclusion bodies, and the patient was diagnosed with CMV gastrocolitis and treated with ganciclovir. Colonoscopy 7 months earlier revealed ischemia-like segmental colitis 10 cm in length in the hepatic flexure without evidence of CMV infection. Col

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to re-evaluate our series of patients affected by a colonic non-neoplastic disease, in order to measure the percentage in whom we were unable to make a correct diagnosis after the first clinical and histological approach and to single-out the reasons for our inability to reach the correct diagnosis.
METHODS: During the period 1985-1999 we observed 1228 patients affected by chronic inflammatory colonic diseases.
RESULTS: In 859 patients (69.9%) an ulcerative colitis was diagnosed for the first time, and 248 patients (20.1%) were affected by Crohn's col

Phlebosclerotic colitis is a rare disease of intestinal ischemia and differentiating it from the typical ischemic colitis. It is caused by venous obstruction due to colonic and mesenteric venous calcification. We report a 36-year-old woman presenting with intermittent abdominal pain. Initial radiologic findings showed multiple tortuous thread-like calcifications in the region of the right side of the colon and transverse colon on plain abdominal radiographs and computed tomography images. In the colonoscopy, edematous dark-bluish colonic mucosa, sclerotic colon wall, and multiple ulcers withou

BACKGROUND: Colitis refers to an inflammatory process of the colon, composed of a variety of different etiologies including inflammatory bowel disease, infectious colitis, ischemic colitis, and allergic colitis. Usually, abdominal computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard in diagnosing the various forms of colitis. However, by the use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), one may occasionally be able to discern wall thickening, pericolic fluid, and adjacent hyperechoic mesenteric fat. One may also see abscesses, fistulae, or ascites.
CASE SERIES: This is a series of 6 patients who had find…

The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) for the treatment of various malignancies is increasing. Immune-related adverse events can occur after ICI administration, with gastrointestinal adverse events constituting a significant proportion of these events. When ICI-related diarrhea/colitis is suspected, endoscopic evaluation is recommended to differentiate it from other etiologies and assess the severity of colitis. The distribution of intestinal inflammation in ICI-related colitis demonstrates a high frequency of extensive colitis (23-86%). However, isolated right-sided colitis (3-8%) an

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections are typically considered opportunistic in individuals with immunosuppressive conditions such as human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, underlying malignancies, organ or bone marrow transplantation, and those receiving chemotherapeutics or steroids. Nevertheless, there is a significant increase in reported instances of CMV infections globally, suggesting that even individuals with a healthy immune system might experience these infections. In such cases, the primary symptoms are typically related to the gastrointestinal system, such as u

Obliterating arteriosclerotic lesions of pelvic vessels may induce inflammation and fibrosis of the rectum and subsequently ischemic proctitis. This may lead to damage of the sphincter muscle and to complete incontinence. Clinical symptoms are pain and bloody stools, as in ischemic colitis. The combination of periproctitis and perianal necrosis may be misinterpreted as anal fistulas. An anus praeter sigmoideus is to be recommended for palliation. A case report of this particular disease is given including clinical, angiographic and morphological data.
