DATA SOURCES: An extensive search in PubMed, EMBASE, and The Cochrane Library was conducted.
STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION: All studies published after 2000 reporting on complications or functional outcome after a primary open IPAA procedure for UC or FAP were selected. Study characteristics, functional outcome, and complications were extracted.

The problems of extracolic-infiltrative lesions of the sigmoid colon and recto-sigmoid junction are discussed, based on representative case studies. BACKGROUND: Familial juvenile polyposis predisposes to the development of carcinoma of the colon. Optimum surgical management and recommended surveillance of affected individuals are still being defined.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of experience with a kindred identified in 1988 was carried out.

This is a case report of an ileosigmoid volvulus in a 68 year old man. The patient had emergency surgery for an acute abdominal condition. Intraoperative diagnosis of an ileosigmoid knot was made and it was necessary to resect the necrotic portion of the ilium, with ilioiliostomy, and to resect the gangrenous section of the sigmoid colon, end colostomy, and Hartmann pouch. Eleven weeks later, a colosigmoidostomy was realized. The evolution of the patient was satisfactory. The literature about ileosigmoid volvulus is reviewed.

In ulcerative colitis, polyposis coli, deep seated cancer and other diseases of the rectum the bowel continuity can be restored without loss of continence, despite the removal of the entire ampulla recti. After proctocolectomy and ileoanostomy the loss of the natural receptaculum is compensated through the positioning of an ileal pouch. After total resection of the rectum and coloanal anostomosis the excised ampulla is replaced with acceptable functional results by the mobilised left colon.

The Indiana continent urinary reservoir procedure for urinary diversion was performed in 46 patients. After the first 8 cases several modifications were made to the Indiana pouch. Cases of endometriosis of the colon were examined in a retrospective fashion to illustrate the problems in diagnosis and management of this disease entity. Nine patients were identified from 1956 to 1988; their average age was 41 years.
