Organ Donation and Transplantation Registries Across the Globe: A Review of the Current State.

BACKGROUND: The current landscape of organ donation and transplantation (ODT) registries is not well established. This narrative review sought to identify and characterize the coverage, structure, and data capture of ODT registries globally. METHODS: We conducted a literature search using Ovid Medline and web searches to identify ODT registries from 2000 to 2023. A list of ODT registries was compiled based on publications of registry design, studies, and reports. Extracted data elements included operational features of registries and the types of donor and recipient data captured. RESULTS: W

The plasmid-borne hipBA operon of Klebsiella michiganensis encodes a potent plasmid stabilization system.

AIMS: Klebsiella michiganensis is a medically important bacterium that has been subject to relatively little attention in the literature. Interrogation of sequence data from K. michiganensis strains in our collection has revealed the presence of multiple large plasmids encoding type II toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems. Such TA systems are responsible for mediating a range of phenotypes, including plasmid stability ('addiction') and antibiotic persistence. In this work, we characterize the hipBA TA locus found within the Klebsiella oxytoca species complex (KoSC). METHODS AND RESULTS: The HipBA TA

Compared with Cotrimoxazole Nitroxoline Seems to Be a Better Option for the Treatment and Prophylaxis of Urinary Tract Infections Caused by Multidrug-Resistant Uropathogens: An In Vitro Study.

The resistance of uropathogens to various antibiotics is increasing, but nitroxoline remains active in vitro against some relevant multidrug resistant uropathogenic bacteria. E. coli strains, which are among the most common uropathogens, are unanimously susceptible. Thus, nitroxoline is an option for the therapy of urinary tract infections caused by multiresistant bacteria. Since nitroxoline is active against bacteria in biofilms, it will also be effective in patients with indwelling catheters or foreign bodies in the urinary tract. Cotrimoxazole, on the other hand, which, in principle, can al

Influence of Dietary Habits on Oxidative Stress Parameters, Selenium, Copper, and Zinc Levels in the Serum of Patients with Age-Related Cataract.

BACKGROUND: A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens that obscures the passage of light, effectively reducing clarity and sharpness of vision. Although this disease can affect both children and adults, the most common type is the age-related cataract (ARC). The literature describes many potential agents associated with cataract development. However, this study focuses on modifiable factors, especially nutritional ones and those that may induce oxidative stress. The objective of the present study was to assess serum selenium (Se), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) concentrations, as well as

Serum iron, Magnesium, Copper, and Manganese Levels in Alcoholism: A Systematic Review.

The aim of this paper was to review recent literature (from 2000 onwards) and summarize the newest findings on fluctuations in the concentration of some essential macro- and microelements in those patients with a history of chronic alcohol abuse. The focus was mainly on four elements which the authors found of particular interest: Iron, magnesium, copper, and manganese. After independently reviewing over 50 articles, the results were consistent with regard to iron and magnesium. On the other hand, data were limited, and in some cases contradictory, as far as copper and manganese were concerned

The mouse Vcs2 gene is a composite structure which evolved by gene fusion and encodes five distinct salivary mRNA species.

Genes of the VCS (variable coding sequence) family are characterized by an extensive evolutionary divergence in the protein-coding sequence. The VCS family has been characterized by cDNA cloning from submandibular glands in the rat, mouse and humans. At the genomic level, the sequences of two members of this family are known in the rat Rattus norvegicus: the VCSA1 gene, encoding the prohormone-like polypeptide SMR1, and the VCSB1 gene, encoding a salivary Pro-rich polypeptide. No genomic data were available for the VCS genes of other species. To understand the evolution of the VCS gene family

Towards a validated patient-specific computational modeling framework to identify failure regions in traditional growing rods in patients with early onset scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: While growing rods are an important contribution to early-onset scoliosis treatment, rod fractures are a common complication that require reoperations. A recent retrieval analysis study performed on failed traditional growing rods revealed that there are commonalities among patient characteristics based on the location of rod fracture. However, it remains unknown if these locations correspond to high stress regions in the implanted construct. METHODS: A patient-specific finite element scoliotic model was developed to match the pre-operative (pre-op) scoliotic curve of a patient as

A phenome-wide association study of CNVs genotyped from genome sequencing read depth in the UK Biobank.

We developed a read-depth-based approach that allows accurate and scalable copy-number genotyping from genome sequencing data, including mosaic, recurrent, and multiallelic copy-number variants (CNVs) that are difficult to genotype using other methods. We genotyped each 5-kb segment throughout the genome in the UK Biobank cohort and performed phenome-wide association studies (PheWASs) using 13,215 traits under three different association models, identifying 501 CNVs associated with 1,537 traits. Of these, almost 75% were not found by comparable single-nucleotide variant (SNV)-based PheWASs. We

Who Gets Dental Caries? A Comprehensive Review.

Dental caries is the world's most common non-communicable disease with a complex etiology including social, behavioral, medical, biological and economical elements. The distribution among populations and age groups is skewed, which calls for validated clinical tools to identify those with increased caries risk. The aim of this article was therefore to review risk factors for caries development in children, based on global prospective birth cohorts, genetic proceedings and data from validated risk assessment tools. The genetic elements involve four main categories comprising enamel quality, sal

Trajectories of Visual and Vestibular Markers of Youth Concussion.

Visual and vestibular deficits, as measured by a visio-vestibular examination (VVE), are markers of concussion in youth. Little is known about VVE evolution post-injury, nor influence of age or sex on trajectory. The objective was to describe the time trend of abnormal VVE elements after concussion. Two cohorts, 11-18 years, were enrolled: healthy adolescents (n = 171) from a high school with VVE assessment before or immediately after their sport seasons and concussed participants (n = 255) from a specialty care concussion program, with initial assessment ≤28 days from injury and VVE repeated

Fat-containing lesions of the retroperitoneum: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Retroperitoneal lesions represent a broad, diverse collection of entities; when they contain fat, the differential diagnosis, which ranges from benign to fully malignant lesions, substantially narrows. Lipomas rarely occur in the retroperitoneum; thus, fat-containing lesions in this location should never be dismissed as lipoma. Pelvic lipomatosis is the overgrowth of histologically normal fat in the extraabdominal compartments of the pelvis along the perirectal and perivesicular spaces. Infants and young children develop lipoblastomas rather than liposarcomas, which occur in older patients. Li

Enrichment of colorectal cancer associations in functional regions: Insight for using epigenomics data in the analysis of whole genome sequence-imputed GWAS data.

BACKGROUND: The evaluation of less frequent genetic variants and their effect on complex disease pose new challenges for genomic research. To investigate whether epigenetic data can be used to inform aggregate rare-variant association methods (RVAM), we assessed whether variants more significantly associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) were preferentially located in non-coding regulatory regions, and whether enrichment was specific to colorectal tissues. METHODS: Active regulatory elements (ARE) were mapped using data from 127 tissues and cell-types from NIH Roadmap Epigenomics and Encyclope

Tackling persistent neurological symptoms in patients following acute COVID-19 infection: an update of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has taught myriad lessons and left several questions we are yet to comprehend. Initially, the scientific community was concerned with the management of acute disease and immunization. Once the peak of the pandemic receded, it became clear that a proportion of patients were far from fully recovered. Researchers started to recognize those persisting symptoms as a new entity termed 'Long COVID,' where neurological symptoms are evident and have a major impact on quality of life. AREAS COVERED: The main purpose of this narrative review is to analyze and synthesi

Invasive Pulmonary Aspergillosis in Lung Transplant Recipients: Retrospective Clinical Analysis from a Tertiary Transplant Center.

AIM: Aspergillosis is the most common invasive fungal infection among lung transplant recipients (LTRs). Although its incidence is lower than that of bacterial or viral infections, it poses a similar or even higher mortality rate due to challenges in early diagnosis, limited treatment options, and various complications. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the pulmonary aspergillosis cases in our tertiary lung transplant center. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 146 LTRs was performed. The demographic data, microbiological and histopathological test results, and radiological findings used for A

AMR mechanisms in L. interrogans serovars: a comprehensive study.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the global health challenges of the 21st century. Data regarding AMR mechanisms in Leptospira interrogans, the causative agents of leptospirosis, have been relatively limited. Therefore, our study aimed to identify resistance genes and explore potential resistance mechanisms specific to particular serovars. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of 98 Leptospira strains, representing 10 common serovars, using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) FASTA files. Employing the PATRIC tool from the Bacterial and Viral Bioinformatics Resource Center (BV-BRC), we scrut

Motor control similarity between speakers saying "a souk" using inverse atlas tongue modeling.

Finite element models (FEM) of the tongue have facilitated speech studies through analysis of internal muscle forces indirectly derived from imaging data. In this work, we build a uniform hexahedral FEM of a tongue atlas constructed from magnetic resonance imaging data of a healthy population. The FEM is driven by inverse internal tongue tissue kinematics of speakers temporally aligned and deformed into the same atlas space, while performing the speech task "a souk" allowing muscle activation predictions. This work aims to investigate the commonalities in tongue motor strategies in the articul
