Motivating non-physician health workers to reduce the behavioral risk factors of non-communicable diseases in the community: a field trial study.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases behavioral risk factors can be improved if effective interventions are designed considering the health system's capabilities and local resources. This study evaluated the effectiveness of interventions that aimed at increasing non-physician community health workers' motivation in reducing non-communicable diseases behavioral risk factors in the community. METHODS: A randomized field trial study was conducted in 32 community health centers in 4 Iranian districts after a baseline population survey on the status of NCDs of 30-70-year-old individuals (n = 122

Impact of COVID-19 on healthcare programs in Zimbabwe: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted healthcare services. Understanding similar epidemic-related disruptions on a broader scope in our local setting is critical for the effective planning of essential services. The study determined the impact of Coronavirus disease(COVID-19) on healthcare programs in Zimbabwe. METHODS: A mixed-methods study compared healthcare service delivery trends from the Ministry of Health and Child Care before, during and post the pandemic. It employed two methods of data collection: Key informant interviews (KII) and secondary data analysis from the Zimbabwe Dis

Health system response to climate-related shocks in a lower-middle-income country setting: A comparative study of floods and droughts in Pakistan.

Climate-related shocks in Pakistan, particularly floods and droughts, are increasingly disrupting essential health services and worsening existing vulnerabilities. Despite expanded disaster management structures, the health system's ability to anticipate, absorb, and adapt to these shocks remains poorly understood. This study explored how planning, resourcing, coordination, and service delivery function during floods and droughts, and how communities cope with these pressures across high-risk districts. Using an exploratory qualitative design, data were collected through interviews with nation

Sexually Transmitted Infections and Health Literacy: A Community-Based Preventive Program.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a public health problem with a high risk of morbidity and community transmissibility. Evidence points to their continuous increase. This study describes the design, development, and implementation of a community-based STI prevention program for community healthcare users. METHODS: Based on the Health Planning Process design method, a structured, community-based intervention program on STI counseling and detection was conducted in a primary health care unit in Lisbon. Two data collection instruments were applied in the diagnosis of the sit

Epilepsy and risk of psychiatric disorders in later life: a population-based cohort study of 38,173 older men.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are frequent among individuals with epilepsy, but it is unclear if this association is causal in later life, particularly because of concurrent comorbidity. We investigated the association between epilepsy and major mental disorders in a large population-based cohort of older men. METHODS: Participants were 38,173 community-dwelling men aged 65-85 years who were followed through linkage to administrative health data for over 20 years. ICD codes identified individuals with epilepsy, and depressive, anxiety, bipolar, psychotic and alcohol use disorders, as well as t

A dynamic process of health risk assessment for business continuity management during the World Exposition Shanghai, China, 2010.

Reports of health issues related to mass gatherings around the world have indicated a potential for public health and medical emergencies to occur on a scale that could place a significant impact on business continuity for national and international organisations. This paper describes a risk assessment process for business continuity management that was performed as part of the planning efforts related to the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China (Expo), the world's largest mass gathering to date. Altogether, 73 million visitors attended the Expo, generating over US$2bn of revenue. During 2008 to 201

Current epidemiological approaches to the metabolic-cognitive syndrome.

In the last decade, cumulative epidemiological evidence suggested that vascular- and metabolic-based risk factors may be important in the development of mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Epidemiological and basic research have also proposed a model of cognitive impairment linked to metabolic syndrome (MetS) and metabolic disorders, suggesting for research purposes a "metabolic-cognitive syndrome" (MCS) in patients with MetS plus cognitive impairment of degenerative or vascular origin. In particular, MetS has been associated with the risk of age-related cognitive decline and vascular deme

Including the public in pandemic planning: a deliberative approach.

BACKGROUND: Against a background of pandemic threat posed by SARS and avian H5N1 influenza, this study used deliberative forums to elucidate informed community perspectives on aspects of pandemic planning. METHODS: Two deliberative forums were carried out with members of the South Australian community. The forums were supported by a qualitative study with adults and youths, systematic reviews of the literature and the involvement of an extended group of academic experts and policy makers. The forum discussions were recorded with simultaneous transcription and analysed thematically. RESULTS:

Risk communication planning for the aftermath of a plague bioattack.

We create an influence diagram of how a plague bioattack could unfold and then use it to identify factors shaping infection risks in many possible scenarios. The influence diagram and associated explanations provide a compact reference that allows risk communicators to identify key messages for pre-event preparation and testing. It can also be used to answer specific questions in whatever unique situations arise, considering both the conditions of the attack and the properties of the attacked populations. The influence diagram allows a quick, visual check of the factors that must be covered wh

SMS-based family planning communication and its association with modern contraception and maternal healthcare use in selected low-middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were to 1) measure the percentage of women who received SMS-based family planning communication, and 2) its association with modern contraception and maternal healthcare services among mothers. In recent years, there has been a growing interest surrounding mobile phone-based health communication and service delivery methods especially in the areas of family planning and reproductive health. However, little is known regarding the role of SMS-based family planning communication on the utilisation of modern contraception and maternal healthcare services in

Increasing Access to FASD-Informed Care: Bringing an Adapted Intervention to Mental Health Providers.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 1 in 4 children seeking mental health care have an undiagnosed fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Few mental health providers receive training or feel competent to serve this population. Evidence-based interventions (EBIs) for FASD have low uptake across mental health settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically adapt an EBI to increase access to care for youth with FASD in mental healthcare settings, resulting in the innovative Families Moving Forward (FMF) Connect Pro program. METHOD: A multidisciplinary planning group employed the theoretically-dri

Knowledge of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases among women attending a family planning clinic in Nairobi, Kenya.

We interviewed 1,716 women attending a family planning clinic in Nairobi between January 1990 and May 1991 about their knowledge of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). When participants in the study were asked to name spontaneously the STDs they knew, more than 90% of the women named gonorrhea and AIDS, and 75.0% named syphilis; 65.4% could name two or more signs of AIDS; and 96.9%, 66.5%, and 58.3% mentioned sexual transmission, transmission via blood transfusion, and perinatal transmission, respectively, as routes of transmission of A

Dance for health impact in a rural Scottish island community: understanding stakeholder experiences.

Research and practice around dance for promoting health and well-being are rapidly expanding, especially dance for chronic neurological conditions. Yet, research has primarily focused on assessing individual-level therapeutic outcomes, providing limited insight into broader stakeholder voices and community-level health impacts. In response, a longitudinal qualitative interview study was conducted to explore stakeholder perspectives on the community impact of a collaborative, community-centred dance for multiple sclerosis (MS) initiative in a rural Scottish island community. Repeated semi-struc

Pandemic influenza planning, United States, 1978-2008.

During the past century, 4 influenza pandemics occurred. After the emergence of a novel influenza virus of swine origin in 1976, national, state, and local US public health authorities began planning efforts to respond to future pandemics. Several events have since stimulated progress in public health emergency planning: the 1997 avian influenza A(H5N1) outbreak in Hong Kong, China; the 2001 anthrax attacks in the United States; the 2003 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome; and the 2003 reemergence of influenza A(H5N1) virus infection in humans. We outline the evolution of US pandemi

Development of the Tiers of Service framework to support system and operational planning for children's healthcare services.

BACKGROUND: Providing access to pediatric healthcare services in British Columbia, Canada, presents unique challenges given low population densities spread across large geographic distances combined with a lack of availability of specialist providers in remote areas, leading to quality of care shortcomings and inequalities in care delivery. The study objective was to develop a framework that provides a common language and methodology for defining and planning child and youth healthcare services across the province. METHODS: The framework was developed in two phases. In Phase 1, a literature a
