Large-scale first-principles electronic structure methods.

First-principles electronic structure methods provide a quantum-mechanically grounded route to describing microscopic matter, but their application to structurally complex and large-scale systems is constrained by global operations whose cost usually scales cubically or worse. Linear-scaling electronic-structure methods seek to overcome this bottleneck by exploiting locality, or nearsightedness, in electronic matter. Their practical performance, however, is not determined by formal scaling alone. It depends on how local representations are reconciled with global fermionic constraints, includin

Synaptic memristors fabricated based on 2D layered CuInP2S6 through chemical intercalation for neuromorphic computing.

Chemical intercalation provides a versatile atomic-scale route for the rational design of molecular hybrid architectures within the van der Waals (vdW) layered hosts, enabling precise modulation of their structure and electrical, optical, and chemical functionalities. Therefore, it provides us a feasible way to achieve modified two-dimensional (2D) vdW materials for stable analog resistive switching (RS) behaviors which are highly desirable for synaptic devices and neuromorphic computing. In this work, we synthesized benzyltriethylammonium-intercalated CuInP2S6 (TEBA-CIPS) hybrid crystals by u

A Hybrid Modeling Framework for Predictive Digital Twins of CHO Cell Culture.

Digital twins of mammalian cell cultures hold great potential for predictive bioprocess modeling, yet their development is challenged by the nonlinear dynamics and metabolic complexity of these systems. We present a hybrid computational framework that integrates mechanistic and data-driven modeling to construct predictive digital twins for Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell cultures producing monoclonal antibodies. The framework couples ordinary differential equation (ODE) models with constraint-based metabolic modeling and machine learning components trained on Bayesian-estimated metabolic rate

Multimodal medical image reconstruction and organ-wise disease classification using a hybrid deep learning-Kalman filtering framework.

Medical image reconstruction and enhancement play a critical role in improving the reliability of computer assisted disease analysis. In this study, a simulation-based hybrid framework is proposed that integrates a deep neural network (DNN) with a cubature Kalman filter (CKF) to combine nonlinear state estimation with learning-based refinement for improved image reconstruction and organ-wise disease classification. The framework is evaluated in a controlled simulation environment using synthetic multimodal radiology-pathology images representing four organs (liver, kidney, lung, and heart) and

Prediction of the Topologically Nontrivial Phase in Three-Dimensional ABX Zintl Compounds.

Zintl compounds have garnered research interest due to their diverse technological applications. Utilizing first-principles calculations, we performed a systematic study of ABX (A = Li, Na, K, Rb, or Cs; B = Si, Ge, Sn, or Pb; and X = P, As, Sb, or Bi) Zintl materials with the P63 mc KSnSb-type structure. Notably, six ABX Zintl compounds (RbSiBi, CsSiBi, LiGeBi, KGeBi, RbGeBi, and CsGeBi) were found to have topologically nontrivial phases, as demonstrated by the Z 2 invariant computed using the hybrid functional HSE06. Among them, RbGeBi and CsGeBi were identified as topological insulators wit

Computer-aided cholelithiasis diagnosis using explainable convolutional neural network.

Accurate and precise identification of cholelithiasis is essential for saving the lives of millions of people worldwide. Although several computer-aided cholelithiasis diagnosis approaches have been introduced in the literature, their use is limited because Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models are black box in nature. Therefore, a novel approach for cholelithiasis classification using custom CNN with post-hoc model explanation is proposed. This paper presents multiple contributions. First, a custom CNN architecture is proposed to classify and predict cholelithiasis from ultrasound image.

A Muscle Synergy-Inspired Adaptive Control Scheme for a Hybrid Walking Neuroprosthesis.

A hybrid neuroprosthesis that uses an electric motor-based wearable exoskeleton and functional electrical stimulation (FES) has a promising potential to restore walking in persons with paraplegia. A hybrid actuation structure introduces effector redundancy, making its automatic control a challenging task because multiple muscles and additional electric motor need to be coordinated. Inspired by the muscle synergy principle, we designed a low dimensional controller to control multiple effectors: FES of multiple muscles and electric motors. The resulting control system may be less complex and eas

Signaling network triggers and membrane physical properties control the actin cytoskeleton-driven isotropic phase of cell spreading.

Cell spreading is regulated by signaling from the integrin receptors that activate intracellular signaling pathways to control actin filament regulatory proteins. We developed a hybrid model of whole-cell spreading in which we modeled the integrin signaling network as ordinary differential equations in multiple compartments, and cell spreading as a three-dimensional stochastic model. The computed activity of the signaling network, represented as time-dependent activity levels of the actin filament regulatory proteins, is used to drive the filament dynamics. We analyzed the hybrid model to unde

The role of PET in the surgical approach to adrenal disease.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate surgical approach to diseases of the adrenal requires a diagnosis sufficient to determine the biochemical status of adrenal dysfunction and anatomic evaluation sufficient to differentiate unilateral from bilateral disease, intra-adrenal from extra-adrenal neoplasm, adrenal tumor recurrence or adrenal metastases. High resolution computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance have been the primary imaging modalities for the evaluation of anatomy, while scintigraphic studies have played a secondary role in diagnosis. The recent availability of functional imaging provided

Energy-aware load balancing in cloud environments using graph neural networks and grey wolf optimization.

Cloud computing infrastructures must constantly maintain a balance between resource utilization and energy consumption to work effective under dynamic workloads. The training expense and generalizability of machine learning-based load balancing algorithms are both considerable, while existing methods often fails in adjusting in real time conditions. To work with both energy-aware and scalable load balancing, this research proposes a hybrid framework that combines Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) with the Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) method. GNN gives accurate workload representation, representing

Rapport de cas Surgical retrieval of a migrated vascular access port catheter in a dog.

A 4-year-old spayed female Boston terrier was diagnosed with a suspected meningioma involving the optic chiasm and resulting in vision loss. A vascular access port (VAP) was placed in the left medial saphenous vein to facilitate frequent anesthetic episodes for radiation therapy. Five days after placement, the VAP was nonfunctional with the silicone catheter still intact. During VAP removal surgery, it was discovered that the silicone catheter had migrated. Intraoperative focal ultrasound could not identify the migrated catheter within the pelvic limb. Thoracic computed tomography identified t

Bioinspired Zinc Macrocycles Confined in UiO-67: A Heterogeneous Synzyme for Sustainable CO2 Valorization.

Nature relies on multifunctional microenvironments to combine substrate recognition, activation, and catalysis with remarkable efficiency. Inspired by this principle, we report heterogeneous synzymes generated by the supramolecular immobilization of pseudopeptidic zinc macrocyclic complexes onto UiO-67 for CO2 activation and valorization. The zinc chiral pseudopeptidic macrocycles can be selectively prepared through solvent-directed macrocyclization, exploiting the conformational preorganization of the precursors to create enzyme-inspired catalytic motifs. Intermolecular hydrogen-bonding effects on excited-state competition for near-unity emission in copper(I) iodide hybrids with cationic ligands.

Copper(I) halide hybrid materials offer a versatile platform for tunable photoluminescence, with potential applications in light-emitting devices and scintillators. However, clarifying how structural features influence their photophysical properties remains important for their further development. Herein, we report two novel Cu(I)-iodide "All-in-One" (AIO) hybrids synthesized from a phosphine-amine ligand that undergoes preferential N-protonation, enabling simultaneous ionic and Cu-P coordination. Comprehensive structural, spectroscopic, and computational analyses suggest that the intermolecul

Accurate vibrational hydrogen-bond shift predictions with multicomponent DFT.

In this work we explore the use of multicomponent methods for the computational simulation of anharmonic OH vibrational shifts. Multicomponent methodologies have become popular over the last years, but still are limited in their application range. However, by enabling the simultaneous quantum treatment of protonic and electronic wave functions/densities, they hold promise for the treatment of anharmonic effects and proton vibrations in general. This potential has only been probed but not fully realized so far. This study investigates the performance of Nuclear-Electronic Orbital Density Functi

Optimized disease prediction in healthcare systems using HDBN and CAEN framework.

Classification and segmentation play a pivotal role in transforming decision-making processes in healthcare, IoT, and edge computing. However, existing methodologies often struggle with accuracy, precision, and specificity when applied to large, heterogeneous datasets, particularly in minimizing false positives and negatives. To address these challenges, we propose a robust hybrid framework comprising three key phases: feature extraction using a Hybrid Deep Belief Network (HDBN), dynamic prediction aggregation via a Custom Adaptive Ensemble Network (CAEN), and an optimization mechanism ensurin

Electronic and photochemical properties of hybrid binary silicon and germanium derived Janus monolayers.

The electronic structures and optical properties of a novel class of hybrid binary Janus materials derived from IV-V groups were investigated using first principles calculations. The computational results demonstrated that, except for Ge2NAs, all the other five structures of M2XY monolayers (M = Si, Ge; X, Y = N, P, As; X ≠ Y) have excellent thermal and dynamical stabilities. Janus Si2NP, Si2NAs, Si2PAs and Ge2NP are semiconductors with direct band gaps spanning the range between 0.82 and 2.49 eV. Notably, the hybrid M2XY materials exhibit highly efficient absorption within the visible light r

A Tube-based Model Predictive Control Method to Regulate a Knee Joint with Functional Electrical Stimulation and Electric Motor Assist.

A hybrid neuroprosthesis system is a promising rehabilitation technology to restore lower-limb function in persons with paraplegia. The technology combines functional electrical stimulation (FES) and a powered lower limb exoskeleton to produce movements for walking and standing. The main control challenge in the hybrid neuroprosthesis is to achieve an optimal coordination between FES and electric motors. Model-based optimal control methods have been suggested for the control of the hybrid neuroprosthesis. However, it is often difficult to effect robust control performance with model-based opti
