Determinants of condom use among monogamous men in Ondo State, Nigeria.

This study examined the factors that influence condom use among monogamous men in Ondo State, Nigeria. Such information can help improve the … ntion of pregnancy simultaneously. Therefore, programme interventions aimed at promoting the use of condoms among men should convey both pregnancy and STIs/HIV/AIDS-prevention messages in one programme.

Normative influence on condom use in the personal networks of female cocaine smokers.

Attitudes-norms research (the theories of planned behavior and reasoned action) has been successful in accounting for many types of behavior … heavy crack cocaine users with multiple sex partners. Results show that stage of change for use of condoms with nonmain partners is best accounted for by interaction-based selection of normative referents.

Impact of a high school condom availability program on sexual attitudes and behaviors.

CONTEXT: While making condoms available in high schools has provoked much debate, evidence on the actual effects of such programs on students' attitudes and behavior is sparse. METHODS: Prior to implementation of a condom availability program in a Los Angeles County high school, 1,945 students in grades 9-12 (98% of eligible students) completed a self-administered anonymous survey on their sexual behavior and on related knowledge and attitudes; one year later, 1,110 students (59% of eligible students) completed a follow-up survey. RESULTS: There was no significant change over time in the per…

Adolescent girls' perceived prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases and condom use.

Little is known concerning sexually experienced and inexperienced adolescent girls' perceptions of the prevalence of condom use and sexually … xperienced girls in perceptions of condom use prevalence, but girls with a history of STD perceived condoms as used less frequently. Girls with an STD history perceived STDs as the most prevalent, followed by sexually inexperienced girls and then sexually experienced girls without a history of an STD. After an adolescent girl initiates sexual intercourse, …

A cross-sectional survey of condom use in conjunction with other contraceptive methods.

A cross-sectional survey of 3,136 women attending family planning clinics in Texas was conducted to examine past use of and future plans for use of condoms by partners during sexual intercourse for disease prevention in conjunction with other contraceptive methods. Following the receipt of clinical services, including counseling about family planning and disease prevention, both contraceptive and planned condom use reporting increased for the majority of subjects. However 22% of the sample indicated that they intended to reduce condom use in the future and instead use a contraceptive which pro…

Sexual risk behavior and condom use among street youth in Hollywood.

A study of 610 street youth aged 13-23 who attended drop-in centers in Hollywood, Calif., reveals that 96% are sexually experienced. One-half of the young men and one-third of the young women have engaged in sex for food, money, shelter, drugs or other items needed. Twenty-five percent of the men and 15% of the women have injected drugs at some time in their life. Some 45% of the men and 30% of the women used condoms at last intercourse. A logistic regression analysis found that among men, those who have completed 10th grade or higher are nearly three times as likely to use condoms as are thos…

Sexual behavior and condom use--District of Columbia, January-February, 1992.

From 1980 through 1990, the cumulative incidence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the District of Columbia (DC) (2713 cases per 100,000 persons) was approximately eight times that of the surrounding metropolitan area (340 per 100,000) (1). From 1980 through 1986, the AIDS epidemic primarily involved men who had sex with men; since 1986, the incidence of AIDS has been increasing among injecting-drug users (IDUs) and their sex partners (1). Although AIDS incidence in DC has been projected to increase by 34% from 1990 to 1994 (1), patterns of sexual behavior and condom use are unkn

Comparison of condom breakage during human use with performance in laboratory testing.

This paper combines results from a study of the determinants of condom quality and use conducted by The Population Council in two countries in the Caribbean with results from a condom breakage study conducted by Family Health International (FHI) in the United States. The studies, conducted two years apart, compared the breakage rates of condoms from the same lot during human use to their performance in laboratory test results. Breakage rates of 12.9% for Barbados, 10.1% for St. Lucia and 6.7% for the United States compared to passing ASTM laboratory tests suggest that existing laboratory tests…

Condom knowledge, history of use, and attitudes among chemically addicted populations.

The need for behavioral change of risky sexual practices has been of the highest priority since the onset of the AIDS epidemic. The major focus of education for safe sex has been emphasis on condom use. We surveyed 124 individuals applying to treatment for various chemical dependencies and 60 individuals applying for non-chemical-dependency medical treatment on various aspects of condom knowledge, history of use, and attitudes. Respondents reported that AIDS has motivated them to increase their use of condoms, however, only 13.9% always use them. Education is needed in the areas of increasing …

The use of urethral, condom, and suprapubic catheters in aged nursing home patients.

In this study of 4,259 aged patients in 53 randomly selected nursing homes in Maryland, we found that 10% of women and 15% of men used a urine collection device. Among bedfast patients, 47% of women and 58% of men and, among patients with decubitus ulcers, 37% of women and 33% of men were using a urine collection device. The indwelling urethral catheter was the most commonly used device. Indeed, for women, few other options were available: 93% of women used this device. In women, multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that presence of a decubitus ulcer and occupation of a long-term ca

The female condom. A pilot study of the acceptability of a new female barrier method.

The best available prevention against sexually transmitted diseases is limited to a consistent and correct use of a condom by the male. A new barrier method has been developed for the female. As it can be inserted into the vagina before sexual intercourse starts, and as it covers the entrance of the vagina, the opening of the urethra and the root of the penis, it is presumed to give a high degree of protection against sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy. The preliminary results concerning acceptability are promising, and further investigations concerning acceptability and effi

Factors influencing selected heterosexual male college students' condom use.

This study assessed selected heterosexual male college students' use of condoms, their reasons for using condoms, and their attitudes toward sexuality and condoms. Three hundred five male subjects completed a questionnaire that assessed class standing, marital status, reasons for using condoms, number of recent sexual partners, intention to use condoms, and attitudes toward sexuality and condoms. Although no relationship between attitudes toward sexuality and attitudes toward condoms was noted, a negative correlation (-.42) was found between attitude toward condoms and intention to use condoms…
